Welcome to Washington Joshua Josephs

6 batted balls, 6 forced fumbles in two seasons and did so on a limited pitch count, to me is a clear outcome of using your length in an advantgeous way

Going a bit deeper on him, he doesn't seem too complicated.

He sort of plays out of control, like the joke about Riggs in Lethal Weapon for those who know the movie, and that out of control is sometimes good, and sometimes bad.

I can see the bet on the good because of the length, athleticism, and motor. Those are tools that a good coach can work with

His character stuff seems to be driven by being pals with James Pearce but suppposedly he's matured later in his college career. I guess will see.

Some draftniks ala Jeremy Greene, I know some on the board are big fans of his, he's got him as a 2nd rounder, some have as a 2nd-3rd rounder. Scouts, according to McGinn are high on him, too. I can see the idea that these guys might be a bit carried away with his tools. But a 5th round flier on this dude, is more than fine with me.

I’ve said that, haven’t I? That I can see the reason to take a flier?

Point is, I think a lot of people are WAY too sold on him. There’s not a lot of meat to the bones. But the bones are strong.

I am betting on an athlete with freakish length with a 21% pass rush rate wins versus a dude with 30 inch arms, isn't a good athlete and a 13% pass rush win rate.
I know its not be all and end all, but Curry had 11 sacks last yr. Not bad for a not great athlete w poor measurables.

We will see how this turns out, but it is the classic argument about whether you take the guy w production of the guy with traits.

Need someone like him an awesome player and an character guy indeed. Welcome!

Curry was on my guys list as one of my favorite late rounders. So yeah I like him. But late rounds was the key for me. He went towards the bottom of the 6th round that makes sense to me. Not top of the 5th.

Curry wasn't even ranked top 20 by the scouts that McGinn interviews.

You said in another post that its production not traits that work when taking edges. I gather you are thinking of toolsy players without the production behind them in the first round. And I am with you on that. That's why I argued against Faulk.

In the first you want production along with the tools IMO, versus just betting on potential. You want both worlds to ensure you have a high enough floor Edge.

But if you are going 5th-7th rounds, you want IMO potential. Dudes that can be molded but with the traits if they find their stride can succeed, especially IMO at edge and corner.

Curry didn't fall basically to just short of the 7th round because teams weren't aware that he had 11 sacks (a chunk of them by the way that were cleanup sacks set up by someone else, I know because I watched a zillion Ohio state games multiple times). He fell because dudes who aren't athletic let alone that with the smallest wingspan and arms in this draft class generally don't translate to the NFL.

Still he was one of my flier picks for the late rounds. So I get why you dig him. But it would be a big reach in the early 5th IMHO.

I'm not saying that Curry is a sure fire NFL player, far from it and his draft staus proved as much. But what downgraded him was measurables, not production. I watched a lot of Ohio St. and he flashed quite a bit on a defence loaded w talent.

Admittedly, I know nothing about Josephs, I like his measurables and his ability to set the edge, but as a playmaker/pass rusher I'm underwhlemed. As a 5th rd pick, my expectations are low, if he can be an effective run down player I'm good with that.

On day 3, I'm not too worried about whether a guy is a 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th, it comes down to team preferences at that stage. Some teams like traits, others prefer production. But I assume (I havent looked into it) that on day 3 production out weighs traits.

In a post well before the draft I thought Curry was a lot like his former teammate Jack Sawyer, who was a 4th rd pick and played a good amount w Pittsburgh.

I know nothing about him so for giggles I went and looked at his highlights but I accidentally watched his 2024 highlights and I was like woof, what do they see in this guy.
But then I realized my mistake and watched 2025, much better.

I too thought it was a spot we might go for a center, a position I’ve thought could derail our offense if things don’t work out.

We only have 2 DEs under contract for next year though, so a developmental guy with upside makes a lot of sense. Particularly a guy with plus traits that translate to the NFL, and whose negatives are (for the most part) coachable.

I think Logan Paulsen mentioned that he looked comfortable dropping off the line and sees him as maybe the closest guy we have to Andrew Van Ginkel - a key piece in the Vikings D.

This take by Logan is silly to me. AVG is a former QB. He is a smart and instinctive player who is a former QB. Given Josephs’s lack of development, I assume the football IQ is low

He's a gamble, but on day 3 why not?

Jack Sawyer, was 6'4, and just short of 32 arm length. Curry 6'2, and a little over 30 inch arm length.

Sawyer with 1 sack and was rated by PFF the 105th best edge out of 115 last season.

You never know Curry could be fine, but you are betting big on an outlier,

Extremely similar physical profile, height, arm length, weight, 40, 10 yard split, vertical.

Jean Baptise was about a year and a half older when drafted, and as a 6th year senior he 5 sacks, 10 TFL’s , 49 tackles, 1PBU and 1 FF.

Josephs as a 4th year senior, had 4 sacks, 6 TFL, 33 tackles, 3 FF and 3 PBU’s.

So, I am not basing my opinion on tape, but on physical profile and production.

JJB had diarrhea at the combine. That is why he weighed 10 pounds under his weight at the time. He is now listed at 260.

Other traits are similar

On day 3 you aren't betting big on anything, its 50/50 at best

I prefer floor, it seems you prefer ceiling, there is no right or wrong, just preference

BTW, I know you put a lot of thought into your posts and you research things, a big contributor to this board, whose opinion I respect (but may not always agree with).

Thanks. And disagreement is what makes discussion interesting so no problem of course at all on that front.

It’s not close to 50/50 on day 3 much worst odds. i think though you are missing my point about Curry I don’t think he has a high floor. IMO when you are betting on big time outlier traits you are betting on a wild exception so that’s a low floor not high.

As to Joseph, he has the traits but is wildly inconsistent as a player. Up and down from play to play but he has NFL traits so specifically for a 5th round edge IMO he is the one with the higher floor compared to Curry.

If you are going with pure betting odds, the odds are good that any player drafted in the 5th round will be a bust including Joseph.

I agree the hype feels overblown.

I think the 2nd and third round ranking both from scout rankings and draft media feel high.

Where they took him feels like right where he should have fallen. Late 4th/early 5th.

He’s definitely raw and inconsistent. What gives me hope is his motor. He plays hard. So add that with his athleticism and length, you got some tools to work with.

I think he uses his length well but wih the disclaimer that it also feels like he plays out of control and that includes his arms. They have to IMO reign that in.

Part of me is dying to know how you know that and another part of me doesn't want to know at all.

Jesus we're sick when it comes to research.

And here I thought Dianna russini was committed to getting scoops and method man is hanging out in bathroom stalls at the combine with his feet in the air.

Thought his stone face schtick when getting drafted as his family celebrated around him was sort of weird. Or maybe he just doesn’t emote, but it felt kind of too-cool for school which is silly for a 5th rounder with barely double digit career sacks.

Don’t get me wrong, a mid-rounder with a chip on his shoulder is never a bad thing. You need a drive to develop and a chip on the shoulder can sometimes suffice for the right personality type.

Just thought it was interesting because it felt like he felt he was entitled to go higher, and was pissed he didn’t. Understandable, but the rankings and draft projections showing him possibly going higher before the actual draft, they were valuing his potential upside. Upside by definition hasn’t happened yet, so it feels weird to aggressively think you should have been drafted higher purely on upside that you still have to put a shitload of work into to have a shot at reaching anyways. Like overvaluing your own upside that everyone tells you that you have, which you haven’t met yet, is just an interesting mindset.

It reminds me of ARSB when he was drafted in the 5th by the Lions. Except he was an extremely productive college player who was just small, so a chip on your shoulder in that situation is understandable (plus WR personalities are almost always wack). You proved you could produce despite your perceived flaws and people ignored it, and you fell.

But a guy like Josephs here, it’s the opposite. His football journey is going to be trying to make the production on the field match his tools, otherwise he could be wasting potential. So to see a similar chip on his shoulder when he’s only been situationally successful in advanced analytics, but not broadly successful or productive overall at a premium position, is just interesting.

Not labeling it a red flag, he was just a kid in a big moment. Maybe he was overwhelmed, maybe he hoped to go elsewhere and needs to get used to the idea of Washington. These guys are human.

But I’m definitely filing it away to remember in case he’s weird in the future. Bc it was a little weird.

Is it possible he and his agent thought he’d go a good bit earlier?

Well he passes the uneducated eye test to me. Looks a bit unrefined and technically ‘loose’, but I get an undercurrent of edge to his character, chip on his shoulder over his perception on draft position, kinda think you wind him up and let him go.

5th rounder, sounds like a decent investment.
