Commanders have signed Matt Gay and released Zane Gonzalez. Gay will earn 4.25 Mill fully guaranteed with 5 mill possible through incentives. It is the highest guarantee for a kicker in history.

Well he is definitely an upgrade over Gonzales. He was bad beyond 50 yds in 2024 but in the prior 5 seasons he was 25/36 from 50+, that’s almost 70% so 2024 appears to be an anomaly.

They had to do something at the position. Zane gave us the divisional doink. Which should not have been a doink at all. Gay had a down year last year for sure. So his salary is a little head scratching. But again it was necessary.

No idea how many kickers he has held for with Washington and the dude has been the definition of a core Commander. He is set to make 3 million this year while the new kicker is getting 5. I'm pleased with this signing. According to ESPN he had surgery on a hernia in 2024. Pretty sure that would mess with the long ones.

From ESPN - Gay, 31, battled injuries at times during the past two seasons, including a hernia that required surgery during the 2024 preseason. Gay returned in Week 2 and said his health was not a factor in his struggles.

"Kicking is very, very mental," Gay said. "I've been very good from 50-plus in my career, and I have full confidence going forward that I can make these kicks. I've shown that I can do that."
