We were having a conversation recently over at The Noosphere about the development of Laser weapons. I'm thinking this video documents one of the first uses of a drone-mounted laser weapon. Pretty impressive show of power.

does this look like a UFO to anyone else? I'm sure its a stealth something or other..but this is weird.

and thats pretty ****ing powerful if real. I dont know if that sort of weapon should be designed and introduced ever.

At the end of the clip, they zoom in on it a bit. Looks exactly like a stealth drone with a laser turret mounted underneath. Amazing power for such a small delivery vehicle. I view it like any other weapons system - but it's a weapons system that requires no ammo or ordnance, which is an amazing advantage.

Is this the rail gun? Those things are bad ass. Can just hammer a coast line from a mile offshore with excellent accuracy.

I agree...but the atom bomb was an amazing advantage and then so was the nuclear missle. ICBMs, stealth, supersonic.

all of these types of technology and weapons always end up in the hands of "the enemy" and then what? To me, I think we need to slow down with the weapon designing and figure how to not need them.

I thought this was a cool video and example of new weapons technology, so I posted it. I'm sure there are lots of discussions out there on the internet elsewhere as to whether or not it's 'ethical' or 'inhumane'.

oh, my bad. I didnt mean to step on your toes here. I was just adding how I felt about it all.

cool gun.

You didn't. I'm thinking there will be topics that should be fine to post in the 5 O'Clock forum, as long as they don't venture into pitched discussions regarding politics, ethics, etc, etc...that will take some getting used to...

I am thinking this was a laser platform, not a rail gun - a rail gun still needs a projectile (it just uses electromagnetic energy to propel it). The video appears to show pulses of light (laser) not a projectile being fired. If I had to guess, they were honing in on vehicles, fuel storage, something like that, hence the big explosion. But I'm just guessing.

didn't think of it that way. Makes sense.

I have to admit though when I saw the youtube still and the title I thought of this:

OK, question. If you look to the left when the smoke cloud goes up you will see the plane fire again and then a ball of fire shoot from the top of the smoke stack.

I wonder what is causing that to happen so high. There is no building that high and it is definitely a second explosion after the gun fires a second time.

Yeah, I see what you're talking about - kind of odd. Guess it could be vapor or liquid thrown up by the initial blast that then ignites as a secondary explosion. Not sure. Would love to know the details of what they were attacking specifically....

the more I watch it, the more impressed I am with it. But it also opens up all kinds of questions.

how many shots do you get?
what does it run on?
how much does it weigh?

great...now I'm about to go on a Google hunt.

Try not to get the NSA tracking you down for googleing it Mike!! I think part of what happened was a secondary explosion, maybe from ordnance on the ground. Would a laser cause an explosion on its own? I agree with what the guy on the video said, that was ****ing bad ass!

its apparently a TR-3B but I dont see anything about that weapon. I am fascinated with this.

damn..its fake.

here is the original clip
