The Blind Pig crew talks potential veteran 'breakout' and possible 'step back' players in 2024. Who will shine and who will regress? No one knows but we talk about likely candidates with our fan fingers crossed. With apologies in advance to Jim Zorn and his relatives #maroonandblackbutnotmasterofhisowndomain

When I think about the defensive potential of the team going into the season I get stuck on the term ‘swiss-army knife‘. (Not to be confused with position-flex, which is great unless you don’t scheme for it to confuse and or cause concern from opposing offensive coordinators.)

Luvu, Davis, Chinn, Martin, Hampton, Butler, Magee, etc should cause more than a few sleepless nights for opposing coaching staffs. These guys should be anywhere and everywhere from one down to the next.

I want it to be Davis that breaks out but ugh's, I wouldn't bet on it. I think Dotson is the safer bet but that's boring. I'm going scorched earth for the huge payout with no, nada, zilch, zero sense behind it. Emmanuel Forbes becomes the f'ing pick machine or he never sees the field ever again after pre-season and collects a check (as Derek mentioned) the dead cap hit on him is 9 million this year, after June 1 next year it's 4.9, I don't see us eating 9 million this year but can see him gone after June 1 next year, however he's going to ball out. So I'm using one player in both categories, maybe that's cheating.

Great pod, always a tough question and especially with some of aging vets as Bob pointed out, some deteriorate and some fall off a cliff.

I think you will see McCaffrey come in at 6'2 and with 4.45 speed and be a lot more than a slot receiver for this team.

While I think Dotson will be better than he was in 2023, the chances of this team picking up his option at the prices now being bandied around the NFL likely indicate he won't be back here on a second contract.

I also think Sinnott will be much more than the hybrid H-back that Merril Hoge stereotyped him as after the draft.

He has good size, speed and hands and is a good blocker at the point of attack - which means he is the first TE prospect we have had that projects to being a potential 3 down player on offense.

A name we didn't mention but stands to take a huge step forward is Sam Cosmi

I kind of felt like he stepped up in 2023 but yeah…

Zeitler was a free agent Washington could have used to play LG. He was a free agent for some time after the opening of the negotiation period.

My thoughts were along the same Boone but according to PFF - He played 1103 snaps, had 4 penalties and gave up 1 sack and a 4.3% pressure rate which was better than Joe Thuney's pressure rate of 4.6% in KC. Now we know what they say, there's stats, then there's the truth.

Our old boy Scherff graded out as 17th best

It would've fit our recent mold of older vets on 1 year deals since he got 6 million from Detroit for 2024, maybe at 34 years old it wasn't worth the risk for a guard??
