Wash Post: Kornheiser and Wilbon see a RG3-Shanahan Rift

I see Mike unWise is at it again, another "read between the lines" blurb.... which is just about all these pundits know how to do nowadays.

The clairvoyant acumen of these guys is astounding, they should all be investment bankers, allowed only to use their own money.

If Shanahan really wants a contract extension from Snyder -- if he ever wants to be the one who stands atop of the podium, smiling with Griffin, holding the trophy – he may want to more closely consider his relationship with Griffin.

damn offseason

I don't like Mike Wise, but I don't see how anyone can disagree with much in that article.

It was insulting, disrespectful and ignorant for Shanny to come out again last week and say that RG3 needs to learn how to slide, when the kid who has given us 150% of himself is badly injured because Shanny ran him into the ground. How is that not ignorant?

What kind of moron, after having jeopardized the franchise player we traded the world for, comes out and says that bs while the kid is still in physical rehab partly cause Shanny was too stupid to pull him from the game?

If you were RG3, getting ready for another day of recovery and rehab, you might be a little pissed too.

If another coach did that to his star player....we'd likely shake our heads in disbelief. But because it's our HC, everything's cool. It was smart.

And don't forget there are a lot of people in the media that were looking at the cap penalty as a way of downing the Redskins for what they perceive we're slights by Snyder going back years.

But instead of suffering the team went 10-6 and won the division which has some of these guys rabid to find issues to create division as we head into Year 2 with Griffin.

My guess is a lot if NFL people who feed the media rumors and anonymous info regularly are worried that like with Al Davis after the 1979 court case the league might at some point have to present Snyder with a Lombardi Trophy.

There are probably 10-15 owners that would rather slit their wrists.

So now it's Shanny ran RG3 into the ground?

That's some damn good revisionist history right there.

The guy was hurt on a pass play that broke down and he was scrambling out of it. It wasn't a designed run.

And I wonder where all this concern was when in the past, we've had Brunnel gutting it out on one leg and more recently, Garcon gutting it out on a bad foot?

It's the offseason...where alot of folks go off the rails over-analyzing everything.........

Diesel, a bad choice of words on my part.

Ran into the ground= continued to play him when he was obviously incredibly injured, far past the point of anything logical, and potentially ruining his football career for life.

Can you think of a worse coaching decision in franchise history? I can't.

I think we all wanted him pulled(I was hoping Cousins would've started the second half) but that's just not the mentality of a coach and a player.

It's crazy, I know, but that's the way it is.

"...then perhaps they had better do so and decrease the surplus population."

I recall a great blog from Boone, basically saying that the only way we can **** this up is to let RG3 turn into another version of Michael Vick, physically speaking.

We are one year in. He's had a concussion and his second ACLU surgery. We can't possibly **** this up again next year. We can't have another year like the last in terms of RG3.

His third ACL will likely be lights out. We traded the world for the guy.

And for Shanny to come out a second time, saying he needs to learn how to slide? It's true. It's also ignorant and disrespectful as hell as he's healing because Shanny was too stupid to pull him.

Those were stupid. But they weren't 2 or 3 firsts, and a second, stupid.

That's a whole different level of stupidity.

McD, I think most people from the outside looking in agree that Shanahan did not handle things well. There was unanimity, IIRC, when it happened that Griff should have been pulled earlier in the game.

Who knows how the coach and the player feel? Only they do. Maybe there's a rift, maybe there isn't. Even with the start of baseball, DC is a football town, and by a lot. A LOT. This was done to "cover" the team to keep interest and sell papers. Period.

Time will tell if this is something to worry about or not.

Understood, Goal. I know they need to sell papers, and the writers have to write about something in a slow offseason.

Still, I find it wild that everyone is so mum on Shanahan. We all know the reason:

We have sucked so hard for so long, and no one wants another coaching search. Me included.

So we will accept a total **** call by Shanny because honestly, what's the alternative?

Dan telling us that he's making Jim Zorn a HC? Because if we don't, someone else will?

It's bull****. If Shanny wants to keep things quiet, then don't come out again for the second time, and tell everyone that RG3 needs to learn how to slide. That's bull****.

If you were RG3's father right now, how confident would you be that Shanny is restrained enough, or intelligent enough to have your son's long term interests in mind?

I'll answer that for you. You wouldn't be confident at all.

All Mike Wise is saying is that Shanny needs to wake the **** up. I can't get on him for saying that.

Let's get one thing clear that maybe no one wants to talk about. Shanahan is being paid to produce NOW, not in five years. That's the eternal struggle between the GM and the Head Coach in a healthy organization.

So to think that Shanahan in the middle of a playoff game was thinking about ANYTHING other than winning that game that day is nuts. He wasn't.

Now, we can debate whether or not Griff should have been pulled because Cousins gave us a better chance to win or not (i think that is true, personally). But faulting a coach who was playing for now, and not the future is nuts. There are 31 other coaches in the NFL, and I'd be willing to bet that with a VERY few exceptions, they all would play for the win today, not tomorrow.

Again, second guessing Shanny's judgment on not pulling Griff earlier is fine. But you seem to want to crucify him for not having the long term interests of the team at heart, and I'm telling I don't think that is at all unusual.

And I'd be willing to bet Griffin felt the same way, as most great athletes do. Which is why I have a hard time taking these reports very seriously.

Hate Wibon and hate Kornheiser first and foremost.

The ways ShanAllen can make this whole thing better imo are to cut way the **** down on designed runs, procure Griff a solid/healthy target like a Gronk type TE, and invest in the o-line, most notably RT.

Better protection, sticky handed targets and MINIMAL runs are where it's at for Griff's health.

I don't think that's 'all' Mike Wise is saying. He's taking a couple comments and extrapolating from them (when he has no idea what was really intended by the comments) all kinds of things. He has no more idea if anything he's saying approximates reality than you or I do. But he goes ahead and puts out the **** as though it were fact anyway. That's not sports journalism, that's National Enquirer-style crap. Why anyone should give Wise, who's really just the latest in a long line of Washington Post instigators-for-hire, a 'pass' when he's just throwing crap at a wall to see if it sticks is beyond me.

As for the whole debate around RG3, Shanahan, and the incidents/decisions that lead to his injury, I'm pretty sure everyone involved knows they need to be smarter going forward. Everyone. And I'm also pretty sure that's all that Griffin was saying the other day. Although I wouldn't write an article declaring that and put it in the Washington Post. Because, you know, I'd just be talking out of my ass :)

except that Doc Andrews has more or less stated Shanahan was making **** up when it comes to Andrews rogering up.

In my mind, this comes down to a combination of a rookie being so team oriented that he neglected his own future...and a coach so wrapped up in a game that he couldn't separate himself from the immediate circumstances to think bigger picture. guaranteed Robert won't let things play out this way in the future. he now knows he...ultimately....is responsible for his own welfare.

The WP is already sniffing around for ammo to create a controversy over when Davey Johnson is stepping down as manager and whether it was all his decision or not.

Over the past 25 years the press here has changed from reporting news to manufacturing it.

The intent is now to savage any players or teams that are getting notice for winning games.

Ovechkin and Wall have already been beaten up pretty well. The press is now onto the RGIII - Shanahan relationship and should be starting on tearing down Strasburg and Harper shortly.

I don't want to get too involved in this thread, because it requires high levels of "suspension of disbelief" to think that Shanahan is not an incompetent selfish bastard after witnessing what will forever be known as the "debacle". In my opinion, if there is any bad blood at all between him and RG3 he needs to be punted faster than than RG3 runs the forty...
