Viral Video thread

I sincerely hope that somehow, someway, his message gets through to the Russian people. For the vast majority have been shutout to anything but the government propaganda being spewed.

They really have no idea.

I wondered as I watched it, how is he trying to get it to the Russian people? If he's just putting it on social media, zero chance any significant numbers of Russians see it. I'm not sure I buy the idea that the Russian people don't know what's going on. Word of mouth is a powerful thing, even in a huge country.

My wife is Russian by birth and escaped during Perestroika. Her mother and eldest sister still live there. A very significant percentage of the population have been effectively brainwashed by the government for so long and been cowed into toeing the party line or face being imprisoned or worse. Most of her relatives, friends and acquaintances in-country that she is still in contact with via the small amount of communication platforms still available are defending Putin’s actions. Word of mouth in democracies is powerful. In autocratic dictatorships it is a threat that often results in severe, and often deadly, consequences. Citizens are currently under the threat of a decade in prison or worse for sharing information or thoughts that go against the party line. Neighbors turn in neighbors for such behavior. There are no impartial courts of law. There is no protection under the law. There is no innocent until proven guilty. There is no juries of peers. I could go on and on but suffice it to say that the fear is real. The propaganda is real.

Great info Chris - thanks for sharing

I guess where I was going with that Chris was that it seems likely people may know (at least partially) the truth without being able to acknowledge or verbalize the truth. Could be totally wrong about that. ‘Word of mouth’ probably not the right way to characterize it. Does the average Russian really believe there are Nazis in the Ukraine for example?

My honest answer is- I don’t know. I couldn’t know. My best guess is yes or at least many more than one would think. The average Russian lives under the iron rule of a terrorist government and has for many decades. The Russian government places no value on the lives of it’s citizens. The young males are nothing but fresh meat for the grinder that is Putin’s ambition. The truly sad part is that it is the average Russians, that have already been systematically trod upon for generations, will be the only ones to truly pay the price for that ambition. Putin, a multi-billionaire living in unbelievable luxury paid for by stealing every ruble/dollar he can get from them, will face no consequences until the time comes that his ‘subjects’ take matters into their own hands.

My wife is a dual-citizen of Russia and Finland. She has decided that once she is able to get her mother safely to Finland she is going to renounce her Russian citizenship. If she were to enter Russia now she could be arrested and imprisoned for her social media posts.

She has a good friend (Russian living in Monaco) who has a very large IG following. She has been very vocal about the atrocities happening in Ukraine. The Russian government has been reportedly trying to get Interpol to arrest and return her to Moscow.

Someone really needs to frag this guy.

Russia is by far the largest landmass country on the planet, nearly twice the size of Canada, China and the U.S.

Yet it has the GDP of Texas and 117 billionaires.

The Cable Guy is seriously underrated...
