Thoughts to Marty Schottenheimer - Update

You know - it may have been some 1st year employee or intern. Issue I have with it is, I don't think they've issued a public apology even now after admitting that was the original headline?

Unless Wapo is now hiring middle-aged or older interns or rookies, they wouldn’t know that.

Probably right about that...

Marty Schottenheimer might be the most pissed on coach in the history of the NFL. The man won in Cleveland. Let that sink in. CLEVELAND. If not for the Elway drive and the Byner fumble, he takes freaking Cleveland to the Super Bowl in back to back years. They fire him of course because they are Cleveland. He then goes to KC and wins in KC. They fire him too despite winning, but he was there for 10 years and sometimes coaches just run their course. He comes here and we know the story. He loses then wins and is fired, never really getting a chance. He then goes to San Diego and wins. One bad season early on, but otherwise success. He is then fired after going 14-2. Losing I might add to Tom Brady and the Patriots in the playoffs. That was his last year coaching. 14-2 and never a job again. The man was a great coach and by all accounts a great man. I'm not surprised people are now pissing on his grave since people pissed on him while he was alive.

Just think about this for a moment. The worst owner he ever worked for in the worst situation he probably ever had as a coach sent out a classy tribute to him. Meanwhile a newspaper that considers itself some arbiter of truth that knows more than everyone else (read their slogan if you don't believe they think that highly of themselves) can't help but trash him in his death. Just a sad state of affairs that even an obituary of one of the best coaches of the 80s - 00s (He has 200 wins which is 8th overall in NFL history) can't go without biased commentary. There is a reason readership of that rag is going down and this is a big reason why.

As much as I wish Marty could have stayed in Washington, I'm glad he didn't stay too long and ruin his legacy as a coach. I think he could have done great things here, but as bad as Snyder has been, that timeframe was one of his worst. Marty deserved much better as a coach and he certainly deserves much better even in death. Rest in peace Marty. You were an amazing coach that touched many people who played for you.

I agree with most of that. I do think Schottenheimer was a bit of a loose cannon. He had a big personality and probably more than his share of arrogance. It was definitely his way or the highway. That’s not an uncommon trait in successful football coaches but it likely rubbed many the wrong way. I think the reason he moved around quite a bit and left teams even in the midst of success is that his act got old and at some point owners may have tired of his act. I do think Schottenheomer was a flawed guy, as most of us are. There were some unseemly things I won’t mention that also tarnished his rep I won’t get into.

Couple additional thoughts... I think we all agree that someone’s death is not an ideal time to point out their flaws and failures. Why the Washington Post chose that route is beyond me. As for Snyder, he’s got a lot of balls even commenting, given his ego-driven ousting of Schottenheimer. I think a private outreach might’ve looked more sincere and been better received. As it is the ‘Tanya and I ...’ press release just looks like yet another effort to reconstruct his reputation as an uncaring tyrant. I know that’s a harsh take, but he’s earned it.

We’ll never know where Marty could’ve taken the Redskins but I think we all know firing him because Ashburn wasn’t big enough for both egos definitely makes the top 5 list of stupid, arrogant Dan Snyder decisions.

Yeah, I’m not saying Marty was perfect and he did have an ego. He was definitely a my way or the highway guy. That worked for so many players and a some didn’t like it. I think that was probably a function of the era he coached in where coaches were more hard nosed and could toss around their weight. As far as the ego, we can count on one hand the number of great football coaches without a massive ego. But an ego alone doesn’t make you successful. Just ask any coach with the last name of Ryan. I don’t know Marty personally and only know what I saw of him as a coach. And I always thought he was underrated and overlooked as a great coach.

The headline in the paper definitely angered me because his obituary should be given without opinion. When Jim Zorn eventually passes away, I don’t want his obituary to mention he was a failed head coach. You just state what he did and his record. People can form their own opinions. People can like Marty and how he coached or they don’t have to like him. That’s everyone’s choice. Many who played for him loved him and his coaching while others did not. That’s fine too. For me, the results show he was underappreciated as a coach.
