I don't mean to sound ungrateful or demanding, but why 5 years?

Upcoming Bills stadium - 3 years from breaking ground
Vikings stadium - 2.5 years from breaking ground
Raiders stadium - less than 3 years from breaking ground
Upcoming Titans stadium - ~3 years from breaking ground

Are we truly 2 years from breaking ground, if it takes 3 years from that point?
Is it still another 2 years until the site is cleared?
Another 2 years until plans are ready?

(Full disclosure: I am NOT in the stadium building business, so I more than likely have no idea what I am talking about)

Now that you mentioned it that does seem like a longer time that would normally be necessary. Maybe for what they wanna do it’s gonna take the extra time.

I did hear they were supposed to break ground on it this coming year.

Those other stadiums didn't require demolition like RFK does, did they?

Hopefully turf fields stored under the stadium and bleachers that bounce take a lot of planning and construction time.

Demolition, but also because they were threading the needle for this particular site, but had other backup options, I doubt plans are super developed yet for the actual architectural design. They weren’t going to waste time and money on that before they had a definite site. If this DC thing had fallen apart they would’ve had to quickly start all over again with VA/MD. So they likely have very little in the way of design work done, haven’t taken bids from contractors, haven’t sourced anything at all.

Im guessing a lot had to do with non actual stadium construction, entertainment centers, housing (sounds like 6000 units), council added a lot of fluff to this. They already slowed down demo of the old site with a lot of demands on the company to mitigate dust etc (remember reading some of the restraints put on the demo project, no explosives was another). Dont think i'm even scratching the surface of all the things that are involved beyond field, seats and a stadium roof.

It's not just demolition of the existing facility it's also prepping the site with basic infrastructure such as electrical water communications Etc

Oh, for sure! Five years just seems like a LONG time...not every new stadium is constructed on a ready-to-go site.

In fairness, prep on those sites could have been going on for quite some time before officially "breaking ground"...

Apparently, we are not a full go yet. Since DC is not a state, for the next 30 working days of congress (does not include weekends/holidays), a single congress person could object to the stadium and everything could come to a halt. So we are not truly in the clear until sometime in October.

Bottom line there’s no reason to think it won’t happen at this point, but it’s gonna be a while lol.

Everybody buckle up and get ready for the long ride. The entire project won’t be completed until 2040 when I’m 65…god willing. The stadium will have been open 10 years by the time everything else is done.

I think opening day 2030 is realistic

Edit: unless you're native to the area, and have actually done work in DC? There's a whole another layer of bureaucracy which slows things down. The only time there's an "exception" is if there is a federal or national emergency. If you don't have "the card" you going to encounter this extra layer of bullshit.
