Mr Cooke had Potomac Yards all but locked up, then the DC government added a bunch of other demands so he told them to pound sand and moved to Maryland.
 
This deal is a legacy/posterity decision that could bring an unbelievable amount of cash to the City not to mention rid us of an eyesore in the heart of the Nation’s Capital. Personally, I believe the area and the country need this to happen. This team always unified the DMV in a way that I just don’t think will happen again if it’s not back in the City on that site.

Put simply, if they blow this opportunity they are fools. A 2.7 Billion private investment is about as a good a deal as anyone would offer.
 
I now firmly believe that the project will get approved. It probably will not go completely according to the timeline that the developer (the team) wants but that very rarely happens anyway.
 
Get ready for every ill informed moron to complain about “more money for public schools and less Homer Simpsons!”
 
The city has nothing, not a single viable alternative to the deal proposed by the team. Let the property stagnate and remain and undeveloped eyesore, or let's get the ball rolling! Some people obviously want to be "lobbied" (💵) and to do some grandstanding while they're at it.
 
If I was a betting man, teams not going back to DC, it's been a pipe dream for years and is a nostalgia play more so than anything at this time. Also, as someone who no longer lives in the area I could care less if the team is in DC, MD or VA. As long as the stadium is nice, traffic isn't abysmal and it's a great fan experience.

D.C. Council is absolutely messing this up, but what else is new. They are absolutely inept. If I'm the HOG, I'm going right to MD or VA and working on hammering out a deal ASAP or at least pressure the city into a deal (see Capital One arena improvements after Leonsis and Co went to VA for a new stadium deal). DC has burned this bridge. There isn't another franchise out there who asked the city to fund a mere 1/3 of the overall cost of building a brand new stadium that would absolutely bring in a ton of revenue for the city.

It’s 2025. I don’t bet against coalitions of billionaires getting what they want. And they clearly want DC.
 
If you haven't listened to the episode of The Al Galdi Podcast with Howard Gutman, he discusses the political side of this and the relationship of the counsel and the mayor. And he's very good. He's obviously well connected, and he knows how the game is played.

I'll add a few quick thoughts:

  • Literally everybody except the city counsel want this to happen. The mayor, the team, the NFL and the Federal Government. Don't forget that the Senate UNANIMOUSLY passed, in the waning hours of it's final session of 2024, the bill to allow DC to lease the land back with specific language for a stadium.
  • The Counsel has to show that it's not being pushed around by literally all of the people who are pushing it around. I get they don't want it to appear that way. But quite frankly, that's what's happening. And they want to show they matter, they can make a better deal, and they can set the timeline. It's chest puffing and posturing.
  • I don't think the HOG is going to bother with going to VA or MD, because I think they are pretty confident eventually DC is going to sort itself out. There is going to be too much pressure to get it done.
  • That said, never count out the possibility DC can just be overly stupid. Could the counsel blow up the entire thing? They sure could. I don't think they will because in the end, they do want the revenue generated by the stadium. But DC government has a history of doing things counter to it's own best interest. (Like allowing JKC to leave DC and go to Maryland right after the team won 3 SBs.)
  • I also think the timeline probably has 6-12 months of buffer in it. Harris is smart, he knows how this goes, and I'm sure they put the July 15th deadline out there in order to pressure DC, but built in plenty of contingency in case the DC Counsel did what they are doing. Which, I'd almost bet was predicted.
  • At some point, the NFL will whisper softly into somebody's ear that if they don't pass the stadium bill, the draft will go somewhere else. That is going to have a lot of ramifications. And none of them good for DC or the Counsel.

I still think this is going to get done. It's not going to get done when they want it to get done. The Counsel has to show it has authority. And I think the HOG, Mayor and NFL will probably let them puff their chests out for a bit. But eventually, they are going to find a way to force it through.
 
Tldr summation- Yeah, it’s just politics as usual. In the end…money talks. 😉

Glad they are looking into this. A natural grass field would remove most of the dislike I feel for enclosed stadiums.
