The Name Change

The lines are clear enough - it's staying within them that is tough on a topic like this - to a certain extent it's tough to discuss without some 'going there'.

I'm very curious about these organizations, and if they really represent 2M Native Americans. Perhaps Shi No or Ryman can shed some light on that?

Problem with statements like that are, did the 2 million actually have any input, or just an assumption on their behalf by a small group championing the "cause".

It makes me wonder who is financing this commercial. Who is actually paying the bill for this ad?

And what are the odds of Dan being competent enough to win this?

It amazes me how they portray Original Americans as such prosperous people, with the greater majority being at or below the poverty level.

We don't call ourselves redskins. Not in common speech.

Don't really think that matters though, as the point is whether or not it's racist. It isn't.

So what is the next shoe to drop?

I expect us to keep the name for this season. But what is the end game? The league turns on us, or a huge sponsor turns on us? Is that the final kill shot?

Budweiser says "screw you" and we are done? It would have to be a massive company....Bud, FedEx, etc.

Take a look
Just one more time

Shes so pretty

You go "Scorched Earth", a tactic taught by a former _________, who ironically, is married to our next _________.

You take everybody down with you that you can.

EVERYONE!

because most owners are decent and nice humans?

I dont see how ANY team can come out and try to speak out against us without having a finger pointed right back at them. if there is one thing I'd bet on its that these other owners dont want a microscope turned on to them.

I watched the game...but didn't see the commercial. when did it air?

Not sure what your point is. I saw a lot of Native Americans in a lot of different situations during the commercial...including some poignant shots of poverty.

I thought it was a pretty effective ad about some folks very proud of their heritage.

some folks..not the majority but some. some that were hand picked for this commercial. that right there makes it even less worthy of being on television.

did you see one casino? Did you see any that were prospering? How about any that didn't have a problem with it? No, you didnt because it wouldn't fit their agenda.

and how much of the money spent on a commercial during prime time, on a major network, during the NBA finals could have actually been spent on something worthwhile? If the people in "poverty" on the commercial knew I bet they could think of better ways to spend it than drumming up bullshit controversy.

It only aired in certain markets - yours might not have been one of them...

Interesting. I live right by 3 casinos and a big population of this area are of that descent.

Maybe though. The local station here was talking about it this morning and when I told them that Oklahoma meant red skin they kind of just stopped. They didn't know that and it kind of changed the perspective.

I expect the next shoe to be of the legal variety. There's a pending hearing at the trademark office, which was cleverly staged by having a snack file for a trademark with the term Redskins in it which the trademark office rejected. The stage has already been set for them to say the word is offensive and therefore not a valid trademark.

We also don't know what the politicians are up to. There's multiple ways to attack the issue, we'll see which one they choose.

The end game is for the name to change, the question is how long it will take to get there. There's nothing we (meaning supporters of the name) can do; there's nothing actionable. We can't make them stop, we can't get some seal of approval that will end the issue, there's literally nothing that can be done. So the other side has time on their side and as much of it as they need.

While majority of the supporters of the name see the press releases over the last year as defensive techniques (at best) or ill advised PR moves (at worse) something different clicked in my head just the other week. They now read to me like half-assed attempts to salvage the fan base for the pending name change. When it happens they'll release a statement with lots of paragraphs that will include references to a 'bright future' without 'forgetting our past' and all sorts of other nonsense, but it'll be easily summarized with: "we did everything we could, but our hands are tied, please don't be mad at us and please accept this new team"

And it'll probably work. They'll probably salvage the majority of the fan base and with a few winning seasons they'll recoup losses - DC loves a winner.

It ****ing irritates me beyond belief that we've reached this point, but I just don't see any other way around it. When I try to take a step back and look at it objectively, I just don't see a way of 'winning' this one. The other side will not stop until the name is changed; there is no legal ruling that will change that, no statement from a person of any affiliation that will matter.

At this point... for me... all that's left is wondering how I'm going to feel when the team is announced as a new name for the first time. I have no idea. I don't know how anyone can possibly predict something so emotionally driven.

It's just a matter of making it to the season opener at this point. I don't see how the name could possibly change after game five, for example.

Just make it another two months or so, and they'll buy themselves another year of time.

Oh yeah, I don't see it changing this year or next. Without some big ruling from some from the government I don't see how they could force the change any sooner.

But we're talking about years. The other side has decades to keep on doing this.

The team screwed up from the start. I said at the very beginning that if they were going to get involved in this game they better do it right; so far they've failed. They appointed a shady guy to the head of the foundation, they issued a letter that said it would be the last comment on the issue only to throw out many more comments, they let some nitwit run a twitter campaign which is stupid on so many levels and just show show disconnected they are from reality (twitter is the stomping ground of the progressive-types that start and support this sort of stuff, why the hell would you turn to twitter? idiots.)....

The appropriate response was no response, or very carefully timed and thought out responses. They did neither. Now they're stuck in a conversation they cannot win.

They just better hope whatever legal action is taken in the future that they're capable of fighting it, and that the sponsors of the NFL and specifically the Redskins are not swayed away because of it.

Well said and well put tshile.

who the **** is Chump Bailey? The guy who was cheating on his woman so much that he had to leave DC?

The tables should be turned on all of these ass clowns who speak up and they should be put under their own spotlight.
