Don't stop reading... It's not what you think - this one's not about the ever-shrinking Washington Football fanbase.
I'm a horror fan, and for a long while I have enjoyed post-Apocalyptic shows like 'The Walking Dead'. We usually find out quickly in these types of dramas that the enemy turns out not just to be the pod people, or the zombies, or the living dead, but those humans who survive as well. And that's certainly the case in 'The Last of Us', HBO's new drama based on a popular video game. This time around, it's not the beloved virus that sends humankind to the brink of extinction. Instead, global warming results in the mutation of Cordyceps, a mushroom strain that can apparently even in real life, take over the nervous system of some animals. It doesn't go well for the humans. Clearly this is why you gas-guzzling, big carbon footprint SOBs are going to be the end of all of us.
But as with 'The Walking Dead' (which really is a much better show than many 'oh great - another zombie series' critics want to acknowledge), the story here is really about what happens to society and surviving humanity. Sometimes I wonder why civilization seems to immediately break down into mayhem, violence, and murderous treachery in these things, but then I watch the SOTU Address, and I get it.
This is a really good show. I know nothing about the video game - and let's face it movies and series based on games don't have a stellar record of cinematic glory - but this one might be the exception. The characters are amazing. The actors are amazing. And so far, the story lines are compelling. Watch the first 2 episodes and it's 'oh okay, I see where this is going... I've seen it before'. And then comes a pretty brave (even in 2023) 3rd episode that will really blow you away if you still have a beating compassionate heart in your chest.
If you aren't already sucked in, I'd recommend you go to HBO and binge the first 4 episodes. I think you're going to want to get on the bus with the rest of us. I mean, as long as you don't have any weird looking wounds or a temperature. It's going to be a good one.
