The Jayden Daniels Tracker

I don't have any idea how good McCarthy is going to be, but if he plays the season I would bet on him being better than Darnold. His HC makes pro bowlers out of anybody so far.

Nix played like a top 10 QB after the first month. He's probably going to be better than Williams.
 
Was catching up with Paulsen's latest podcast and Hoffman's latest radio segment. Not much. But a few things.

A. Hoffman said Deebo was getting a lot of volume of plays.

B. Amos looked good. But its just one practice

C. Paulsen expanded on the safety-LB spot a little. this is based on last year. In short, Owens looks very raw as a safety but is a stud special teamer. He feels Hampton is the distinctly better big nickel safety type or LB over Owens from what he saw. But Owens likely gets more game time play because he's an exceptional special teamer. He also told Keim he doesn't think Harris is much of a drop off from Chinn. Thinks Harris is the better coverage player.

I think Daniels is a better QB than Hurts. Hurts couldn't win a SB until he had the #1 defense in the NFL, the #1 offensive line in the NFL, and the #1 RB in the NFL to lean on. In these cases, I just switch their contexts and see if each could likely do the same as the other.

Could Daniels have won a SB with the #1 defense, #1 OL, and a #1 RB who almost broke the single season rushing record? Considering that he was the reason that a far less talented team got to the NFCCG, I'd argue that the answer is "absolutely."

Could Hurts on this team last season have pulled off the same crazy heroics and single-handedly brought the team to the SB (if someone is going to argue that Hurts is better than Daniels, then it stands to reason that he'd need to take the team further than Daniels did)? Considering his output and play so far in his career, I'd argue "nope." Hurts isn't a QB who is going to simply take over and will a team to victory with his arm and legs. He's not that guy, no matter what Eagles fans want to think. He needs a good supporting cast to be successful. Which is the same as the vast majority of NFL QBs.

But IMO it puts him in the 8-10 rank range of QBs, not top 5. The top 5 are the game changers.
 
Daniels showed exceptional poise and maturity for a rookie QB last season and I think will improve even more this season. Some detractors are still saying he was a fluke, as was the team as a whole, but Daniels is not the type to let that type of talk get to him.

Would I put JD in the top 5 right now? Not quite yet. Top 10? Yes by far.

It just feels good to finally have a QB that we can utterly rely on in crunch time. Been way too long and even including fully healthy RG3 in that.

Well, it's a small sample size with our guy - but it's all we have. I would say it's clear that Daniels is going to be a more accurate passer (he already is) than Hurts, who had his best season in 2024 but just doesn't have the pinpoint ability as a thrower that Jayden has shown so far. He also takes more risks and as a result has thrown quite a few INTs over the course of his career. Both guys are very good using their feet, but Daniels is by far the more elusive.

With the crazy good year that Barkley had in 2024, Hurts wasn't asked to carry the team on his back, and that's a great situation to have when your QB is very good, but takes unnecessary risks and isn't elitely accurate. But as much as it pains me to say, Hurts is a pretty damned effective QB, and he has gotten better each of the last 4 seasons as a full-time starter.

I think the only part I would really disagree with here is the bolded. Hurts had a down 2023 from pretty much every standpoint: threw one more TD than 2022 but threw 2.5x as many INTs, had a lower QBR, lower rating, lower completion percentage.

I just think overall it's kind of hard to grade a guy like Hurts because he's clearly a good QB, but he's also on a team that's been absolutely flush with talent over the past 3 seasons. What would he look like on a team with middling talent? Hard to say.
 
Naa, it's not really that's hard. With Robinson, McLaurin, Ertz, a plethora of scrubs, and a bad OL, mediocre defense and no tush push Hz might have won 7 games last year. Max. I'd probably put the over under at 5.

If he's expected to make play after play with his arm it's just not going to happen.

Only worry with Daniels now is if he's can stay on the field. Gotta love what they did for his protection.
 
The Athletic's annual NFL QB tiers list was released today.




Daniels was ranked 6th, the first in Tier 2.

No second-year QB has made a higher Tiers debut than Daniels. His 1.71 average and 17 top-tier votes break the records C.J. Stroud set last year. Stroud had eclipsed 2021 Justin Herbert.

"What I respect most is it never seems too big for him," a defensive coordinator said of Daniels. "He would stand in the pocket and deliver the ball. Once we saw him running around, it was, 'OK, he is going to be a problem.'"

Daniels became the only rookie starting quarterback in the Super Bowl era to reach a conference championship game without a top defense (Washington ranked 24th in defensive EPA per play, per TruMedia).

"He's a 2 with the arrow up," another defensive coordinator said. "He can run, he can throw with accuracy and he's really calm — the s--- ain't too big for him, and it's easy to see when you are playing him. He doesn't get flustered."

Daniels' 891 yards rushing last season ranked second to Jackson among quarterbacks. He is among 10 QBs in league history to average at least 50 yards rushing per game in 14-plus starts. The others: Jackson, Justin Fields, Bobby Douglass, Michael Vick, Randall Cunningham, Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson, Jalen Hurts and Kyler Murray. Daniels might already be a better passer than most of those.

"He is probably the best passer in our division," a voter from one of Washington's NFC East rivals said. "He is really good."

Daniels commanded 13 more Tier 1 votes than the rest of the NFC East combined (Hurts got three, while Dak Prescott got one).

"This dude has got arm, legs and processing," another defensive coordinator said of Daniels. "He just took his team to the championship game with a non-championship-caliber roster."

Can Daniels sustain it? Stroud regressed after a stellar rookie season. Also, opponents seemed to figure out Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury when he was in Arizona, where another dual-threat QB, Murray, failed to sustain early promise.

"I think he is tremendous," a head coach said of Daniels. "I don't want to '1' him because I want to see another year. Get me halfway through that second year and I'll have a good feel. The defensive coordinators will have all had their shot."
 
Someone trolled on that survey response. Put Daniels in Tier 4. But still crazy placement for a QB with just 1 season. An argument to be made he should be a few spots lower in the same tier, but regardless everyone already knows he's "HIM" as they say.
 
Other surveys I've seen have him at 5 just behind Burrow which I kind of agree with because on top of all he did last year, especially blowing away the record on 4th down without a cheat code tush push, he also never has a sack fumble and rarely throws up a dumb pick.

People didn't even get mad when he did throw one because it was just so rare.

I think someone put him in Tier 4 because they felt they needed more info on him first—that’s the tier that voters put QBs who they feel haven’t played enough yet.
