I'm with you. I don't think his response mean anything with respect to his staff. Heck he doesn' have total control of them. He can't hire them, and therefore can't fire them, and therefore can't do anything with them. That's the whole falicy with having a rook head coach be in charge of nothing but his offense. Gruden knows it and his answers make him look weak, but his hands are tied. That's part of what Fan62 alluded to, the organizational structure is deficient. Can't work like this setup.

More worried about Gruden's respons to his learning curve. that he never imagined he would face as many issues as he was dealt with. He doesn't know how to handle it all and looks a little lost now with being overwhelmed with all he has discovered he must do to build a winner. Only, he did not expect to totally scrap what he brought to he table and start completely over. He'll be busy this offseason for sure. If I were Gruden I would try to impress Dan and Bruce that what he needs on the sidelines are coaches with a vast amount of winning experience, not just coaching experience. Jay needs help and lots of it. But lets be clear, Jay has no power and does not make any of the decisions. He's just trying to look good and be "all inclusive". But that next meeting with Bruce and Dan, it will be all about Jay doing the listening and not the talking.
 
Gruden wasn't ready for this job.

I remember Joe Gibbs saying when he was the OC in San Diego that he would sit down and go over in his mind who he would hire as assistants if he ever got a head coaching position; how he would like to coach and what kind of situation would fit him best.

I bet Gruden never planned like that and as a consequence has been owned by events instead of the other way around.

Gruden is 46, so he can't blame the lack of prep on youth.

Gibbs, Johnson, Shula, Bellichick, Cowher were all coaches at or around 40 in the league.

I think we have to admit he was hyped because of his name. While he was in Cincinnati the Bengals didn't win a playoff game and his pupil, Andy Dalton, was lackluster under pressure.

If his name was 'John Jamison' the Redskins would probably never even interviewed him.
 
BT, you seem the poster child for impatient Redskin fan.

BTW, Gruden's 1st year was 4 times better than Johnson's. Don't recall The Cheater's, or the The Chin's.

And comparing anyone to Gibbs is unfair.
 
Not true I have been waiting 16 years for Snyder and Co to show the know what they are doing. Twice now I have heard from the Redskins' frontmen, first Cerrato and then Allen, that the team had a plan and to be patient.

The plans don't seem to amount to much.

We keep reaching for the quick fix whether it is signing a sexy free agent like Haynesworth or DeSean Jackson or trading for a name like Donovan McNabb, most recently trading three first rounders for Griffin, who didn't operate in a pro style offense in college.

Seems to me the TEAM is the one that doesn't show any patience.

Whatever the new impulse of the moment we just have to have it right away even if the price tag is unreasonably high.

Hence $41M for a DT and a generation of draft picks for Griffin because there would never be another quarterback available for us to develop 😳

I actually thought he'd be a little more prepared than the average first-time HC. He's had a lot of years to watch and learn from his Brother and to grill him for info about best practices, strategic team management, working under a difficult owner, working with players, etc. That he hasn't done so (or absorbed the lessons) is somewhat more worrisome than the tactical/operational mistakes he's made. I agree that he's probably not a born motivator and leader. However some of his problems are things that can be (un)learned rather than innate characteristics.

The chances are good that he's probably not the long-term answer at HC. However I'd like him to stay for another year just to have more time developing Griffin in the same offense so we can better evaluate what we have...or don't. :concern:

I was speaking directly of Gruden. Who you seem to want him jettisoned by sundown.

And whether we want to believe it or not, we have to take Allen at his word, that his reign of full power didn't begin until last off season.
1st year, shaky at best.

One these decades, we have to make a decision and give it 4-5 years to take hold.
 
Oh, Gruden is going to stay. Snyder is done paying coaches to disappear IMO.

Remember all the defensive coaches had contracts for 2014 and came back after Shanahan was fired.

My guess is the accumulated $$ was enough to be a factor in retaining them.
 
Yes, I know Gruden is staying. I'm under the impression you want him gone, yesterday.

And I've listened that reasoning, Snyder forcing Gruden to keep the old staff since they were under contract. Never believed it for a second.
 
Why would a new head coach choose on his own to bring back a defensive staff whose charges just finished 29th in a 32 team league?
 
Plenty of reasons.

Why would a guy who throws millions around like Hersey Kisses be worried about having to pay peanuts to someone that's only making him look bad?

Loyalty, payback, being erroneously convinced that they were "handcuffed". I'm as critical of Gruden as you are BT but all of these reasons make sense.

I said Haslett gone at 10AM today and Bruce Allen moving to new role with new GM at 11 AM.
