The Gruden Files - Year Two

Well here's the thing. If you believe everyone out of Dallas, and our local beat reporters...Keim....etc...Callahan wanted to call plays in Dallas and they said no. He then became very pissed off.

Part of the selling point in getting him here was that we would give him an opportunity to call some running plays.

We're 5 games into the season. Do we piss him off right now, or do we continue to monitor his run play-calling for a longer period of time?

Think big picture. What makes the most sense in regard to his future here? And do you want to include Callahan in that rebuild?

Somehow I doubt those are the only choices we have. I have a feeling if Jay is the consumate leader of men you've been telling us he is for three years now, that he could go to Callahan and find a way to suggest that using Morris more isn't a bad idea. In fact, if he was HALF the leader you swear he is, he'd be able to sell the idea so well that Callahan thought he himself came up with it.

If he goes to Callahan, in your scenario, and Callahan tells him to pound sand, then our choice at that point in time is to fire him or fire Gruden.

YOU don't really want to open that door, do you?

Mcd, for the love of God....

Gruden himself, on the radio, 980 Inside the Locker, has said on numerous occasions that they all help devise a gameplan, as they should. Then, during the game, they discuss EVERY upcoming series. What they will do. Based on down and distance, field position, score, time, etc... He approves whatever the plan for that next series is, and makes changes whenever feels the need to.

So, Callahan only calls a preapproved play, from the head coach.
Sean McVay chooses a preapproved play from the head coach.

McVay, physically radios ALL plays to the QB.

It's in the 980 vault if you don't believe me.

You guys talk like we're 0-14 and getting crushed. We're improved, we're competitive and we're one game out of the NFC East lead. I don't understand all the vitriol and disgust.

Its a combination of two things:

1. Many are frustrated and sick of losing. Rightfully so. For some, the rebuild they previously wanted isn't fast enough. Patience is gone.

2. Morris is a favorite player. RG3 was a favorite player. People went emotionally crazy defending RG3. For a small portion of the fans, it was a traumatic experience. Now they're worried that Morris may see the same fate. It's an uncontrollable reaction.

Everyone here is likely going to lose a favorite player or coach during the rebuild. Maybe several. There's literally a fan on twitter who still goes crazy to this day because Scot cut David Amerson.

It's a rebuild. We've been praying for a real GM for 10 years or longer. He's here. If changes need to be made then he'll make them. But some still haven't bought in.

Honestly, you don't know if even one of those declarations is true. I don't either but I guess I have some belief that the fans don't know more than the coaching staff and that our decision makers aren't incompetent. I get a lot of you think you do know and that's your right. I think I am also 100% correct that there is a total lack of patience amongst this fan base. Sorry.

I believe at the beginning of this discussion, in another thread, I said "When the Redskins win the game, I'll believe they know what they are doing."

I don't think that's all that unreasonable. Forgive me if I'm at the 'show me' stage of fandom.

Yes, there have been a few flashes of progress here and there and that's wonderful. 2-3 is certainly better than 1-4. But an overall successful franchise? I gotta see it first, and until that happens I reserve the right to point out the stuff I don't like. The Redskins haven't exactly earned the benefit of the doubt just yet.

When the Redskins win, REALLY win, I'll be more than happy to shut up.

If after a reasonable period of time Gruden believes that either Callahan or McVay are calling crappy plays then I'm sure he'd step in. Even if it meant losing his own job. We've already seen proof of that by his benching of RG3.

I'm not sure that anyone on the staff.....Callahan, Gruden or Scot.....shares the same feelings about the play-calling as you do though.

Why is Callahan a genius play-caller? The guy is a great line coach. Has he stuck as a head coach or an assistant head coach anywhere for all that long?

If his play-calling in Dallas was a sticking point, even though he's acknowledged as a pretty darn good line coach, why are we SO certain his play-calling is all that great?

Maybe it is. Maybe the guy is a genius in all facets of the game. But where is it established that he is so?

Not trying to tear the guy down because I think he is doing a great job with the line, but this argument that 'Callahan is doing it so it must be right' ... I don't know guys. Is he that infallible and above criticism?

Who told you to shut up? The absence of the results you (and all of us want) coming off a 4-12 season doesn't equate to 'something's horribly wrong'. We've had 2 games this season where we didn't rush the hell out of the ball. That's probably true of half the team's in this league. We're one game out of .500. Again - half the league. I don't disagree that until the team proves it has truly turned the corner, it won't have truly turned the corner. I 100% agree. I have said numerous times that fans want to saddle Gruden and company with their decades of misery. How is that fair in any way? Gruden had a rough first year. I was among his harshest critics. The team is improving, almost across the board we are playing better, the talent pool is improved, and the coaching has improved. So my question (not specifically to you) is 'why all the hysteria and bitching?'

Henry it may turn out to be not good at all. But it's not like our rushing attack has been awful.

From a broader view, if you want Callahan to be the HC in the future, then it probably makes sense to give him a little leeway right now. From Scot's view, that would likely make sense. I'm sure he's taking notes on everything and everyone.

I don't like the approach the team is taking with it's RBs. Sorry.

If we were 5-0 I wouldn't care. Hell, if we were 3-2 I probably wouldn't care, to be honest.

But the shuffling of running backs and the lack of an established go-to guy worries me. It just does, especially on the heels of a 51-yard rushing game.

Really, the only response I get to this is: "The coaches know more than you do. They know what they are doing. Trust them and don't be critical."

Ok, I guess. I've heard that before. Maybe it will be different this time. You are correct that Gruden is a different guy than the other guy or the guy before him or the guy before the guy before him. We'll see. I think we're going to learn a lot about this team and the direction it's going to take over the next few months.

So we'll see.

I thought we would be 0-5 right and looking squarely at 0-6 before the first win could come. This team is being built the right way. Pretty sure that we want to keep McCloughan.

The Pokes are going to get old very fast. Ditto for the Mara bunch. The Eagles - we can only hope that Chip remains as the HC, OC, DC, GM, water boy, cart driver, etc. In other words, we are being built the right way and for the duration.

At 2-3, with a reasonable chance at .500 (that could win the division???), we can be thankful that the team is being built and not filled with over priced divas. I can't hate on Callahan at all, but he will not wave a magic wand and make us Super Bowl champions this season. However, we can't deny that the line is vastly improved. Stay tuned, more to come.

Joe Barry is really doing a solid job as well. Yes, we've had a couple of games where it was less than perfect. Again, this was a 4-12 team last year and the improvement is obvious. Coach Barry will not lead us to a Super Bowl this year, but we can't deny that the defense is vastly improved.

We needed to do some tweaks on special teams and now we have a kicker and punter who excel with each passing week. Sure, it's still not where we want it to be, but it sure is better than last year.

How many of you wanted Alfred to have some adequate backup help last year? There was concern for the number of carries he received each game and we wanted to have another back or two to provide relief and be good runners themselves. Well, Chris Thompson steps up and then we add Matt Jones. What's not to like? We're not going to put up monster numbers each week and some defenses will do their best to shut down the running game.

In the next draft, we'll likely need to take a stud receiver in the first round and add a quality center in the third or fourth round. Think that might help?

In other words, this is still a rebuild mode and we will see some good games and some games where there are struggles. Heck, there are times when our better players have a less than stellar game. It happens.

As for Gruden, sure, we can fire him after this season and lose this staff. Bottom line is that it would put us back to square one and another re-start on another rebuild. Is that the right plan? Come on. If you can't be encouraged (I didn't say happy or elated) with the start this season and how the team is competing, then you won't be happy when they are 12-4 in two or three years.

Picking nits is easy, but realizing the big picture is difficult. But which one is more rewarding? Think about it.

You know that I'm not simply saying 'the coaches know more than you do'. I'm saying all the hand-wringing and second guessing is over the top. There was none of the current hyperventilating after the Rams game - do you remember that one? That's the one where our disastrous RB-sharing resulted in not one, but two 100 yard+ rushing efforts and 3 TDs between the two guys. Yeah, it's one game. But the Giants and Falcons games are only two games. So while I understand your concern, I'll counter with the possibility that using 3 talented guys might not be as big a recipe for disaster as it's being made out to be. If you guys want to stick with one RB for whatever reason, that's fine - just realize it'll probably be Matt Jones who has a better yards per rush average and 3 more rushing TDs in just 5 games than Morris does. I'd like to know why no one addresses the more obvious explanation for games where we have struggled - where NONE of the 3 have been able to run effectively. And the obvious reason is that the holes weren't there in those games, not that if only we'd kept feeding one guy or another we'd have been successful. I also believe that when your QB doesn't play super well (Giants, Falcons games), it's only natural that the other team is going to play tougher against the run because they have the passing game under control. You guys do realize that the Falcons have the #3 rushing defense in the league so far and that the Giants are at #4, right?

Ax, regardless of what you may personally think about another poster, calling people names on this site is unacceptable. If you don't have something constructive to say, don't say anything. Thanks.

So, who do we blame this on?

34 rushing yards
17-0 3rd quarter score

Who takes the blame on this one?

Defense and special teams were there this game

Against a team that was 4-12 last year and has a new, rookie head coach.

Just sayin'.

With a journeyman qb who has had major issues, plus a vet running back and a head case wr.

48-3? Opponents 3rd quarter scoring vs our 3rd quarter scoring thru 6 games.
