The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

I know it's the Adam Peters/Front Office thread, so I will keep my tangent brief. I'm not sure I'm nearly as skeptical about Peters and Company as I am about Dan Quinn. I think the ideal head coach 'type' with a young franchise QB isn't a 'good guy, speak in platitudes, rah rah guy' like Dan Quinn. I would've greatly preferred if they had brought in a Sean Payton 'my way or the highway', tougher HC. I think Mike MacDonald was that option for us, and we blew it by not being more aggressive with him. I think he wanted to come here. We have it on good authority from someone with ties to him that he wanted to come here and expected to come here, but we just drug it out and gave Seattle the opportunity to swoop in and get their guy.

I don't feel the fire, toughness, and urgency with Quinn. I get feel good 'let's all love and support each other' vibes from him. That may make for a great lockerroom and head coach popularity, but I'm not sure that's the right vibe to create an ascending team that has the opportunity to win it all.

Possible that is unfair. Quinn almost got the Falcons there, so perhaps that is too harsh an assessment. I'm just not a fan of all of the talk and feel good BS. Less talk, more results please.

DQ is definitely more of a players coach than a drill sergeant. I wanted Jim Harbaugh to replace Rivera, and I fear the Giants have the best coach in the division now, so I can see this perspective. But I do like DQ a lot and hope he succeeds. He did get the Falcons almost there, and he got us as far as we’ve been in decades, so he’s knocked at the door a few times. I would be thrilled if he gets over that hurdle with us—he’s an easy guy to like—but I wouldn’t bet on it either. He has to prove it.

The trick is to have both.

Gibbs was very much a players' coach, but he made sure he had assistants who could fill that drill sergeant role. If you know you are not the disciplinarian then you need one on your staff or vice versa. If you are the hard ass head coach you probably need player coach assistants.

I know almost nothing about Blough as a coach, but based on his interviews, he seems like a cerebral coach. Jones, from his pressers, feels more like a teacher/players' coach. So, that disciplinarian coach seems to be missing on this team. Then again, what do I know? I haven't attended a single practice and certainly not any closed door practices.

Would AP rank at the bottom of the DC GM power rankings as of now?

- I don’t know enough about the Caps and I know they missed the playoffs this year but they have been a playoff mainstay. They won a championship under MacLellan

- The Wizards new braintrust has had a plan and, despite bad lottery luck until now, they have hit on every first round pick so far (really hard to do in the NBA) and pulled in a couple star players off the scrap heap. Only misstep was not getting enough for Avdija but I get why they traded him. Couldn’t bottom out with him around

- With Toboni and Kilambi, the Nats have a winning record with a young inexperienced group under one of the worst ownership groups in pro sports. The best players are players acquired by the last GM but they’ve been able to complement these guys with scraps

Good post as usual. A bit of feedback from somebody who disagrees on some of it:

I don’t see you as pessimistic about the team or hating exactly. I think you love Jayden and want to blame his supporting cast or lack thereof for other quarterbacks outperforming him. So you are more optimistic about Jayden but more pessimistic about AP and the receivers.

I’m not as high as you on Jayden—some of the other quarterbacks might just be better—but I do think he’s a franchise quarterback if he can stay healthy, and I do love having a guy who always gives us a chance to build around. I’m sure we all know not to take it for granted.

I’m higher than you on AP and our current receivers, in the sense that I would rather play the guys we drafted than overpay an aging free agent with character questions to replace them.

As for how good this team can be, I would bet somewhere between what they were in 2024 and 2025. I don’t think this is a Super Bowl team with or without Stefon Diggs. But if it is a Super Bowl team, then a player like Diggs shouldn’t make or break it.

OK, good post. This is much closer to my actual position than a lot of the responses I've gotten. You didn't nail every part of it, but you're in the neighborhood, and I appreciate you taking the time to understand what I'm actually saying instead of arguing against a caricature of it.

Your view that this team is somewhere between the 2024 and 2025 versions makes a lot of your points click for me. In fact, I suspect that's where some of the others debating me are coming from too. If the premise is that this isn't a true contender and isn't headed for a blockbuster season, then sure, why not trust McCaffrey to be the guy, let the young players develop, and see what happens? If you're wrong, no big deal because the team wasn't going anywhere anyway. Where we differ is on that premise. I think the stakes are higher because I think Jayden is the real deal.

And if this team goes 8-9, I'm not viewing that as some impressive Peters success story. Rivera gets remembered like every season was a disaster, but in 2022 they went 8-8-1. If Peters spends three years building a mediocre team, that's pretty underwhelming to me. Andif your point is correct and it turns out Jayden isn't that guy after all, that's an even bigger indictment of Peters given that he passed on Drake Maye to take him.

A. As for Jayden, you're right. I think he's a stud. More than that, I think he's one of those rare quarterbacks who has the "big game, big moment" gene. The clutch factor is a huge reason why I think this team can win a Super Bowl sooner rather than later. Some guys put up stats. Some guys elevate when the lights are brightest. Jayden strikes me as the latter. He's got "it."

B. Last season doesn't move me much in the Jayden versus Caleb versus Maye debate. Jayden was hurt for much of the year and barely played. And when he did play, his supporting cast was significantly weaker than what those other guys had. So when people start comparing raw production, I mostly shrug. I don't think we got anything close to an apples-to-apples comparison.

C. Where I strongly disagree with some people is on the supporting cast issue. We talk about Chig like he's some proven star when he hasn't even matched some of the better seasons of the Bears' second tight end, let alone their elite starter. New England's third or fourth receiver would arguably be Washington's No. 2 option. The disparity in supporting talent between Jayden and Caleb, Maye, and Nix is massive.

And yes, I think it matters. A lot.

What drives me crazy is when some fans act as if Jayden should simply elevate everyone around him and therefore weapons don't matter. To me, there are two camps.

The first camp basically believes Jayden is already Patrick Mahomes and therefore doesn't need the kind of support that Caleb or Maye supposedly require.

The second camp acknowledges the difference in supporting casts but largely dismisses it as a sidebar, preferring to conclude that maybe Caleb or Maye are simply better quarterbacks.

I reject both arguments.

Quarterbacks matter. Supporting casts matter. Coaching matters. All of it matters. If we are going to compare these young quarterbacks, then let's compare the environments too, because those environments aren't remotely equal.

D. The "let the young receivers develop" argument feels very familiar to me. It sounds a lot like the Rivera-era logic that the answers are always already on the roster. Just wait another year. Just get them in a better scheme. Just let them develop.

We've heard this movie before. Remember when people would point to Armani Rodgers and act like concerns about passing on a strong tight end class were overblown? Or when the offensive line issues were supposedly going to be solved by internal growth? Or when every training camp practice report became proof that a hidden gem was about to emerge? "Did you hear Mason Brooks pancaked Daron Payne in practice?" We have our LG in house!

But at some point, proven talent matters more than hopeful projections. And it's not like we're talking about blue-chip prospects here. Luke McCaffrey was a late third-round pick. Lane was a late fourth-round pick. Historically, most players drafted in those ranges don't become stars. Could they beat the odds? Absolutely. I hope they do. But championship-minded organizations don't hold roster spots hostage waiting to find out.

Look at New England. They drafted Kyle Williams higher than either McCaffrey or Lane was drafted. Yet they're still aggressively adding talent. They're not saying, "Well, we drafted Kyle, so let's stop looking." If Williams earns a role, great. If he beats out a veteran, even better. But they aren't limiting the roster in order to protect a developmental player's path. That's the difference. Development and competition should coexist. One shouldn't come at the expense of the other.

E. As for Peters, I've actually been complimentary of him. I think some people confuse criticism with dislike.

I've never said he's been bad. I've never even said he's average. I think he's been solid. I think he's done a number of good things. I like his temperament. I like his process. I like many of his moves. What I haven't seen yet is evidence that he's operating at an elite level and its not even close.

So if someone is significantly higher on Peters than I am, then I assume they believe he's already bordering on elite as a GM. Maybe they'll be proven right. Maybe he gets there. I actually think there's a chance he does. But for me, he's not there yet. He's been argaubly good -- at best. He's shown promise. He's made some aggressive moves. And considering your thoughts on this team's potential and Jayden -- I don't see how that jives with being really high on Peters. Considering my thoughts on this team and Jayden, shouldn't that mean I am higher on him than you?

Why?

I hear you on the 'character issues' but Diggs has been pretty much exonerated on his most recent charges and the worst thing Aiyuks done (to my knowledge) is being a jackass in a motor vehicle - not good, but not sure it constitutes a blight on his overall character. Bottom line - what is inherently 'good' or 'better' about playing the guys we drafted, especially when none of them have been productive WRs at this level so far? I want to win. Bring in better talent. If any of the guys currently on the roster are about to drastically improve, they will likely show that regardless of who the team adds. We have the $$ - who cares about that aspect?
I agree with most of what you have posted. I do think all of the antics Aiyuk has been involved in over the past 6 months constitutes questionable character as well as the plain dumb motor vehicle incident, which is really a big nothing burger. Regardless of what side is more right or wrong between he and the Niners, they both have shown poor character.

If the team were serious about keeping poor character out of the locker room and sticking with the "Commander" label, then both Diggs and BA would not be signed.

I know... AP wears the BA is a great guy idea on his sleeve, as do many of the coaches and players BA has been around. Plus he of course has the potential of being a WR1 or WR2 written all over him and could be had at a reduced rate, but he is acting like an idiot publicly. It's not a good look for SF, Washington or of course Aiyuk.

I do question the starter potential of a number of our current WR's. We could have a couple studs or we don't. If we don't, we may not know this until September, I sure as hell hope that doesn't occur. If Bough can put everything together the way he envisions it, he can put these guys in better situations than they were left in last year (assuming they stay healthy).

If the team still felt as strongly as they did when chasing Pierce with their pot of gold, then I'd think AP would have other feelers out on WR's and would probably need to be ready to pay up.

The one guy that sticks in my mind is Brian Thomas Jr. Not only another WR familiar with Jayden but a stud coming into the league. The Jags say he is not available but we hear that a lot then trades happen. Put a package together with draft picks, one of our WR's like Luke, or Lane and/or one of our defensive front 7 since we are now stacked there. The Jags love Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington and they have the uber-talented Travis Hunter along with a couple young guys they like. They need help with the front 7.

If the team made a trade like that it would quell any question about them not being all in and fully supporting Jayden. I believe this is the move skinsinparadise would be enamored with.

Hey. it's worth a shot and would give the team a legit contender as an eventual Terry replacement while being an immediate WR2 answer

For this all to work out as if, IMO two of three things have to happen and if a third thing happened the weapons might actually be even good

A. Jayden, 2024 style, runs like mad, if a dude isn't open take off. And hopefully he can do this and stay healthy

B. Terry at 31 is just as healthy and as good as Terry at 29. Some say any team is screwed if they lose their #1 Wr. True to an extent but no team is more screwed than this one if it happens. Good look avoiding what happened in 2025, man coverage and blitzing the heck out of Jayden, if Terry is out again. Dyami playing X, and Burks playing Z isn't scaring anyone.

C. I am assuming Aiyuk is a given. When here, if he finds his old 2023 form, the WRs assuming Terry is healthy would actually be good.

Crazy, but yeah you can make the argument. The Caps FO is easy number one for me. The Wiz and Nats GMs though are going to at least need to make the playoffs before I can consider ranking them above the guy who took us to the NFCG in his first year.

https://www.phillyvoice.com/10-reasons-commanders-will-be-dumpster-fire-season-2026/

They do this every year and roast a NFC East team (including the Eagles). These often wind up being unfortunately correct. This shouldn't come as a surprise to us, as people have complained about various aspects here in this thread. Adam Peters 2025 strategy was abysmal. For my own opinion 2026 off-season was a bit hamstrung, but his off-season grade is passable at best. It can be boosted by the new OC and DC unlocking some players by putting them in better spots.

But we've got a lot of "IF's" such as the new OC and DC elevating everybody. Otherwise we're in a pickle.

Some give me and others are a hard time basically for liking but not loving the plan Peters is executing -- while the article is a bit harsh -- it does bring home how those that aren't enamored with Peters and do not trust his every instinct aren't crazy and or nitpicky just to be nitpicky.

1) Adam Peters stinks

You know what sucks? When your favorite team has a decision maker who doesn't know what he's doing. It took a while, but Giants fans finally came to understand that Joe Schoen was way in over his head. A lot of Cowboys fans have conceded that they're just stuck with Jerry Jones. Somehow, Commanders fans don't yet seem to have realized that Adam Peters absolutely stinks at being an NFL GM.

You can look at Peters' drafts and pretty easily see that there are WAY more misses than hits.

2024

1) QB Jayden Daniels
: Daniels had a stellar rookie season, followed by a bad / injury-plagued second season. The Commanders were obviously going to take a quarterback at No. 2 overall in a QB-rich draft, and for while it looked like they chose the right one, but it's now debatable if they should have taken Drake Maye instead.

2) iDL Jer'Zhan Newton: Rotational D-lineman, not a projected starter in 2026.

2) CB Mike Sainristil: Good rookie season, bad follow-up second season. The Commanders could have selected Cooper DeJean, but traded back with Philly and ended up with Sinristil and Ben Sinnott. The Eagles turned that trade into DeJean and Jalyx Hunt.

2) TE Ben Sinnott: 16 career catches for 142 yards and 2 TDs. He's no better than the TE3 on a roster that doesn't really even have a legit TE1.

3) OL Brandon Coleman: LT starter, then replaced by Laremy Tunsil. Began 2025 as the starting LG, but was benched.

3) WR Luke McCaffrey: 29 career catches for 371 yards and 3 TDs.

5) LB Jordan McGee: OBLB4 and special teamer.

5) CB Dominique Hampton: Not presently on an NFL roster.

7) EDGE Javontae Jean-Baptiste: Had a role to start the 2025 season, torn pec landed him on IR.

2025

1) OT Josh Conerly
: Tough rookie season. (More on that momentarily.)

2) CB Trey Amos: Appeared in 10 games as a rookie, started 8. PFF stats: 34 targets, 23 completions (67.6%), 325 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 108.1 opposing QB rating, 8 missed tackles, no forced fumbles, 6 PBUs.

4) WR Jaylin Lane: 16 catches, 225 yards, 0 TD.

6) LB Kain Medrano: 5 tackles.

7) RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt: 175 rushes, 805 yards, 8 TDs as a rookie.

So, you know, overall... not great!

But even worse than the misses in the draft is Peters' weird, non-nonsensical roster building strategies from year to year.

For example, as we pointed out in detail in our Commanders dumpster fire post last year, Peters assembled the oldest roster in the NFL in the last decade-plus, and it was easily predictable that it would be slow and injury-prone. Some of those old guys — two of whom (Marshon Lattimore and Deebo Samuel) are already gone — were acquired via a bundle of draft picks.

This year, Peters signed much younger and more athletic players, which is an improvement over their asinine approach a year ago. I've peeked around at some sites who graded every teams' free agency, and the Commanders have mostly gotten favorable reviews, mainly because they signed a bunch of players. But that's not the name of the game. The real skill in free agency is finding good value for the players you sign, and if you have to pay a little extra for a star player who is legitimately going to help you win games, then fine.

The Commanders did neither. They added a bunch of players with a trait here or there, but obvious flaws in their games otherwise, and they got them all at bad values. What they did was spend a lot of their available money to marginally improve their roster.

Jayden on a rookie contract. We don't have time to fart around this year and next, etc. This isn't Rivera's team with journeymen QBs where urgency wasn't a big deal because they were never in a window. They are in a window now, Quinn needs to win this season. If not he should go.

My take on Quinn in similar to my take on Peters.

A. Some good, some bad.
B. To trust either completely to me is just pure homerism.
C, Conversely to think either sucks or needs to go now -- is emotional overreaction to a bad season.

Both Peters and Quinn in different interviews referenced this team lacking an edge last year. I've made the reference to Rocky 3 previously. Mr. T was hungrier and kicked Rocky's ass. I'll give them a pass for it. But I need Rocky to win the rematch. If Mr. T kicks Rocky's ass in the rematch, IMO the regime needs to go. You cannot fart around when you got a young QB on a rookie contract who is good -- see the Bears, Pats, Denver.

I personally think they will have a bounce back season because of Jayden. But will see.

That Philly article is trash.

3) Daniels has no help at the skill positions

How many teams out there have a less inspiring group of starting skill position players than the Commanders?

• RB: Jacory Croskey-Merritt
• WR: Terry McLaurin
• WR: Treylon Burks
• WR Antonio Williams
• TE: Chig Okonkwo

The Commanders are also expected to bring in Brandon Aiyuk, one way or another. In case you're unfamiliar with Aiyuk's story:
The writer pays his dues to McLauren, but he doesn't even acknowledge that Washington has masterminded the "our TE is actually WR2 and TE1 at the same time if you squint your eyes really hard" technique. And no mention of Van Jefferson. He was okay 5 years ago, he's really a WR2b to Chig's WR2a.

I wasn't even for hiring Dan Quinn but you mention JD on a rookie contract multiple times in just this one post, and how Quinn has been up and down and Quinn needs to go if they don't win this year.

Well Quinn was 12-5 with JD in 2024, won 2 playoff games, and then started Mariota and a 3rd stringer for most of 2025 because JD only completed 4 games. That franchise QB on a rookie contract wasn't there for most of the losses.

Quinn said that they "lacked an edge" last year while in reality they lacked the one player that everyone expects them to win because he's on the roster.

If JD can't stay healthy again this year, none of the last 6 months of roster moves make a difference. They could have signed Pierce, Diggs, Dobbs, cloned prime Randy Moss, with Andy Reid as HC and they are not going to the playoffs with Mariota and Sam Hartman, Josh Johnson.

The upgraded defense might help in a couple games but it's not going to flip 6-8 games.

So I bet that Peters and Harris are probably looking at things a little differently.

Not that I want Quinn. I wanted them to get an offensive HC or maybe Vrabel.

Yeah if Jayden gets hurt and misses most of the season again, yeah I guess Dan gets an out then, too. But I'd like to see the defense improved in either case.

Warren Sharp summed it well for me if you are going against the grain and hiring a defensive minded HC, then your defense better be really good.

So for me lets say Jayden missed most of the season again. I'd still want to see a defense that doesn't suck.

That Philly article is trash.

Just to be clear, he does one for every NFC East team, every year. His 2025 Dumpster Fire article wound up being unfortunately correct more than it was wrong.

Point 1) We had to buy a defense, we had limited options, we did fairly well buying a defense...but these guys hit FA for a reason. It's a lot of money gambling on these guys fitting better in our scheme than they have in others.
Point 2) Directly leads into Point 3...as Jayden will throw his body on the line to win a play...because the supporting cast stunk in 2025.
Point 3) We've complained about this non-stop all off-season. Love & Tate were drafted ahead of us. We couldn't land Alec Pierce or Romeo Doubs in FA. None of this is ideal.
Point 4) It ignores the growth of Conerly over the season. He still needs to improve more, but it acts as if he never grew at all. The rest year. The point about the Center spot probably has the most agreement with on this board, and the LG spot is I think the largest issue. I think this ties into Point 1...just why did they think Coleman who was a solid starting caliber LT not be a viable option at RT? This Front Office desperately needs Conerly to be better than good.
Point 5 & 6 & 7) Maybe? Too early to tell. New scheme, new players, who knows.
Point 8) Tunsil and Jayden Daniels. Yeah, that's it. Nobody on defense, but hopefully Sonny Styles becomes that. Terry is good but not great, unless he's fully healthy, hasn't lost a step, and Blough unlocks him.
Point 9) Yes. So much rides on the new OC and DC.

I hate to say this.. while this is pessimistic view.. he is mostly right. This 2026 season has a higher chance of being challenging vs impressive.

But 2024, their first season, JDs rookie year, with a bunch of leftover Ron garbage on the team, was even lower chance of being impressive.

I am optimistic but not to the extent that I believe the national media has to be wrong. The season could go south.

In 2024 they had the weakest schedule in the NFL and won so many games by the skin of their teeth.

This schedule at least on paper by most accounts is one of the top 10 hardest.

I don't expect more than 7-8 wins. I didn't expect more than that in 24 either. The first 8 games looks like 2-6 to me, and that's even stealing a win somewhere.

Not just that, but 2024 had the best 4th Down Conversation Rate in modern football history at 87%. That's just a bit flukish. Especially when it was so much higher than the next highest (81%) in modern football history.
