The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

So you know, most things can be found on the homepage.

I’m not on the social sphere - this board is my social feed of skins news. But now I find myself struggling to distinguish between the worthwhile voices on there vs the know nothing engagement whores.

For example, Josh Taylor is a tweeter I see frequently referenced on here and elsewhere. Who is this guy? Does he actually have any credible sources or does he appear to be right by strokes of luck?

To be clear, I’m not asking for a list of professional reporters/opinion makers. I’m well acquainted with the Keim, Jhabvala, Standig et al crew.. I’m just wondering who these oft referenced tweeters are and why anyone puts stock into whatever they have to say because I’m clueless about them.

Taylor has actually reported on the team professionally, he's not a fan looking to get clout on socials.

I dont bleive he's on the beat like the reporters you mentioned, but he does tend to be someone you can count on that he's reporting, not click baiting.

What you really want to avoid is the stuff shared to Commanders groups on Facebook. It's the wild west over there with just flat out fake article being shared all the time.

He's very young. He has written some for Bleacher Report and A to Z sports. I wouldn't quite put him in the category of a professional media coverage guy. He's more a social media guy/blogger who is trying to become that imho. Nothing wrong with that. He has some writing talent and is trying to carve out a niche for himself. That likely entails making the occasional bold prediction or taking on fringe positions at times which I've seen him do quite a bit. I don't think he has a lot of connections but that's just a guess based on his age and resume.

I just meant professionally in the literal sense of the fact that he’s gotten a paycheck for his coverage.

Gotcha. And I'm not trying to take anything away from him. There are 'professionals' (such as Grant Paulson and Chris Russell) who I don't think have any more insight than most people here and who often have no basis for their 'analysis' other than whatever they think will get the most attention. 'Professional' is a pretty subjective word.

2026 GM rankings

24. Adam Peters, Commanders

Adam Peters went all in on 2025. He is currently at the lobby ATM getting ready to buy back in. That was a bust of a campaign. There is no way to sugarcoat it. It’s nice to have a young star quarterback, but you probably aren’t going to win the Super Bowl if you lack skill player depth, offensive line depth, backfield depth and high-end defensive talent. Commanders fans can only hope it was a painful but necessary lesson in NFL team-building. There are no shortcuts. That was felt most acutely during April’s draft, where last year’s deficit spending left the Commandos with only two top-100 selections, just one of which came in the top 70. That would be No. 7 overall pick Sonny Styles, a meat-and-potatoes addition that at least showed Peters was no longer under the impression he was one player away. That followed a free agency where he loaded up on regular defensive contributors. Back to basics, you could say. Humbling, but there’s nothing wrong with getting the message. If you’re going to put it all on the table, you better at least have the cards.

Bottom 3rd is about right for Peters.. all hype

I betcha there aren't very many of you that thought when Harris signed this young hotshot that he's be ranked 24th going into year 3 knowing he was getting a franchise QB with his first selection.

If they’d done that poll after the 2024 season he’d have been top 10. The truth is somewhere in the middle. He’s got potential but has made some mistakes which is to be expected. No one knows yet what his ceiling is as a GM.

I think better of Peters. Too many are overweighting 2025 in my book. The disaster of that season had so more to do with injuries and awful coaching than it did personnel. This season will tell the tale. I'm hopeful that Daronte Jones knows what to do with Newton and that Blough knows what to do with Sinnott and McCaffrey. We'll see.

I don't care if you don't like Peters, but I think some people around here are delusional in their expectations. Look at the track record of GMs widely considered VERY successful, and there are crap years, bad drafts, and questionable signings. It would be like bitching about a baseball player for only hitting 290...

I don't know if Peters will be viewed as a great GM at some point in the future, but the overreaction is kinda mind boggling on light of the 💩 we delt with under Dannyboy.

When he has a home run offseason, the lesser offseasons will retroactively become the cost of doing business. Like you said, even great GM’s have down drafts, poor trades and signings, etc. But we call those guys great GM’s because at some point in their tenure they showed they were great, between the down years. Right now AP doesn’t have that track record. Maybe this is the year that in retrospect pops off like gangbusters, recontextualizing the poor value 2024 draft (minus Jayden) and the poor 2025 FA period? That’s the hope. Eventually, to be a great (even good!) GM he has to have a great offseason, a great draft with multiple pro bowl talents or better. Just start with 1 and build on it.

Right now there’s no great offseason to cast his other offseasons in its shadow. So I’m not sure why it’s relevant that great GM’s also have replacement-level or worse offseasons, when right now that’s all our guy has on his resume. He needs to show some greatness (or very goodness) before he gets the same benefit of the doubt, I don’t know why that’s controversial. We have a regular organizational structure now, AP doesn’t have to be our savior and get unearned credit. If he doesn’t do it, the next “AP-type” can. I don’t need to be attached to the idea of AP when we can hire the next equally-qualified version if he fails.

Most people I think are salty because 2024 was a dream situation for a blue chip GM to walk into, in terms of rebuilding a franchise in his image, extra premium draft choices, massive cap space, QB pick in a QB-rich draft. It’s the opportunity a guy like Peters waited for. And the draft that should have set the foundation for our rebuild and re-emergence to prominence, ended up being Jayden Daniels and a bunch of dudes we aren’t sure will be worth resigning as more than replacement level depth or ST’s contributors. That’s a massive whiff that we’re still compensating for in the offseasons since.

Truthfully I think it all started with the shock of Ben Johnson’s violent rejection of their whole process and vibe during that hiring cycle. The guy might be an asshole, but I think we’ve been on the back foot and not executing our Plan A or Plan B (Macdonald) ever since. It’s why I’d actually give AP a second swing at a HC hire as long as his draft picks start to pan out at a higher rate. He got off on the wrong foot, even drafted for the wrong schemes and philosophies in some ways, not doing what he really came here wanting to do, from day one. I think they got punched in the mouth with their slow and hesitant hiring process and it took a long time to adjust and recover.

Anyways, if guys continue to not emerge into pro bowl talents from that first draft class and beyond, we’ll continue having to compensate for it. So until Peters really nails an offseason and shows he is indeed a stud GM exiting his cocoon, the “what could have been” of it all is pretty depressing. He has time to turn it around, and I think for the most part this offseason was a great step in the right direction, with a caveat or two that have been drilled to death here. This can be the start of something great for AP but we aren’t there yet

I dunno. I think Peters came into one of the worst situations a GM could come into. True, he got to start from ground zero, but he also was forced from ground zero. Look at Harbaugh. He's coming into the Giants with a stacked D line, a punishing running back, a QB with potential, a promising star wide receiver. Peters came into 2024 with nada. There were no foundational pieces to work with. He had to jettison pretty much the whole team minus Terry and the punter.

Yes, having a blank canvas and a new owner is nice. Getting to pick your head coach is nice. But it's also a crap deal. It really is. I mean look at some of us three years later who say... you started with the worst roster in NFL history three years ago. Why the hell isn't this a complete, Super Bowl ready roster already? You didn't get us a receiver. You're an awful GM.

Nobody denies this. He still mostly mishandled the copious resources he was handed that made this an enticing opening for a first-time GM like himself, who had denied many opportunities waiting for the right one to come along. We wouldn’t be talking about how deep in the hole he started if he drafted 2-3 pro bowlers to begin his rebuild, or had any super successful signings who weren’t ancient veterans, etc.

He walked into a big job. He hasn’t put up big offseasons to dig his way out. He’s had three offseasons now, at some point he is his own worst enemy and it becomes about making excuses. He has to draft some studs, and his coaches have to create the environment for them to flourish, in the meeting rooms and on the field. The more optimistic among us can only deny that for so long as the sample size increases. I promise you I’ll be singing a different tune if some reasonable combination of Newton, Sain, Sinnott, LMC, Conley, Amos, Styles, Williams, etc. become the super talented core of our attempt at retool 2.0 here. Notice I’m not even expecting low hit-rate mid/late round lotto tickets to emerge to get here, even though that would help and it’s where the stud GM’s do find gems. I just want some number of our bread & butter picks to start emerging and proving that a really good GM drafted them, becoming the foundation of the rebuild that now feels at least a year behind where it should be, after over-achieving on the field in year one.

It doesn’t matter how bad the roster began when he took the job, when he has mostly drafted mediocre-to-bad players to develop (or simultaneously/alternatively if his coaching staff has failed to develop the players that actually should be better than they look, if you prefer that read).

Everything I said about Peters is fair imo. It begins to sound overly negative when I’m arguing against an overly optimistic take, so I’ll just leave it here, I won’t push back too much more. I don’t think AP sucks, I just have yet to see him do anything special here and I think it’s extremely normal to observe that amongst ourselves while hoping things improve and he grows into a great (or even good) GM. Would I rank him as the 24th or 26th GM in the league? No, I wouldn’t go that far. I think he’s been average, and that’s WITHIN THE CONTEXT of the bad situation you’ve mentioned that we all know about, meaning that’s factoring in making allowances for it. I wasn’t sold average, and I think more optimistic people here also expected better than average when he took over here. Not outcomes, which have all sorts of variables attached and starting average on the field would’ve been very understandable given the hole we were in after Snyder. We overachieved in year one but didn’t build anything sustainable, then didn’t build on it successfully in year two, and now it’s year three and we’re still trying to building a foundation and a coaching staff.

But mainly I’m talking about the draft picks and signings that were executed, that are 100% in AP’s hands that to this point, under the coaching of his hired staff, have not become a roster to be proud of. He can change that, hopefully we’re on that road.

It’s beyond simple. He can very easily shut up fans like me by successfully drafting and signing more really good individual players over time, that his coaching staff successfully develops and coaches to wins. If that sounds like an oversimplification, it’s because it’s a simple equation. Building a good roster coached by good coaches will lead to positive results, and that starts with drafting and signing really good players more consistently than we have. Simple does not mean easy. This is really hard, and it’s the job he was hired for and has the pedigree to do. The more he hits on picks and signings, the more the coaches coach them to develop and win, the more fans like me will believe.
