The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Im gonna go ahead and vote hell no on that idea.

While and interesting concept on how to give players extra rest, injuries already wreak enough havoc on lineups without intentionally adding another wrinkle.

There would be too much focus on the strategy of who to sit when, where and why versus where the focus should be, on football.

You get towards the end of the season and have a couple key matchups to secure a playoff spot and despite having to shuffle the lineup because of injuries which always happens now you gotta also figure where to sit some healthy guys as well because of a stupid rule, it'll water down otherwise good football.

Plus I dont think competitive players will go for it either, look how crosby reacted last year when the raiders wanted to sit him because they were tanking.
 
So they wanna force Load Management onto the NFL too? That is ridiculous.

How about just paying the players to play all the games. They should have kept it at 16 games. It was already perfect. Then they added the 17th game so they could throw in an overseas game for each team. Now, since they are on a roll, why not just make it an even 20?

I am very curious if there is an end to this.

The nfl expansion process is starting to feel like an unstoppable cancer that will eventually kill the host.

And with online gambling now taking over it's almost natural to want to take the league to the world stage. I won't be surprised when they start playing games in Hong Kong and mainland China, if they could find a way to do it.

It sure is. Honestly I wasn't in favor of the 17 game and these European games will never seem fair to the traveling teams.

Next will be two more teams to be added.

And why stop at keeping PK, P and QB exempt from the 17 game limit rule? They will need to add WR1 from every team and how about the long snapper. That's a tough line to draw
 
I am more concerned about the NFL's seeming obsession with becoming a 'Worldwide entity' than adding a game.

First of all, the NFLPA is a pretty powerful organization. If the players don't support expanding the number of games, they won't approve it. They stand to make more money just like NFL owners do, so all of the talk about injury and seasons being too long probably takes a back seat to that factor. I also think if expanding the schedule starts to impact the quality of games due to many starters getting hurt (ie... by the time we get to the Super Bowl, rosters are depleted of marquee players and we have backups playing at QB), I think the NFL would take notice of that and change course.

The whole idea of 'expanding' the league to include international teams seems illogical to me. It's just not very practical. I could see expanding into countries like Mexico, Canada, even South America, but Europe is just too far away. If you are going to try and become an 'all world' entity, to me it would make more sense to have a 3rd conference with all of the international teams in it that compete against each other primarily.

On a side note, I wish the NFL would get rid of the 2 weeks between conference championships and the Super Bowl. It kills the 'momentum' of the playoffs and just isn't necessary.

From DC to London- 7.25 hours
 
Yeah - that makes what the NFL has mostly done to date (just incorporating some games in Europe) look a lot more manageable than moving to other continents.

I guess the big question is, does the NFL envision a future where NFL football teams are CREATED in those overseas locations and compete as part of a larger NFL, or will they continue just to be locations for existing NFL clubs to showcase the sport?

Probably a good topic for a separate thread.

Personally I hope it’s only the latter.
 
Yeah, it's hard to envision how the first option would work? It's not practical to have ongoing US and international teams flying all over the world competing against one another (I mean, unless Star Trek-style transporters get invented sometime soon). And what are they going to do, have separate Super Bowls? Or follow the American Super Bowl with a World Super Bowl ('Super Super Bowl'?). That's why I've always questioned the entire effort to 'spread' NFL football outside the boundaries of America - what is the end goal there?
 
The best way to manage it (which they won't do) is basically have the Euro and US league operate independently like the old AFC and NFC and then come together in some kind of World Bowl. Pretty sure those days are gone though. They did try a Euro league as a sort of minor league experiment and it flopped pretty badly.
 
The other factor would be that it could take decades for the quality of that kind of league to rise to the level where they could legitimately 'compete' with US NFL teams. It raises so many questions - how would it impact the NFL draft, free agency, trades, is there even enough talent worldwide to provide the necessary supporting talent, etc...

Again, my question is, does the NFL even have a coherent goal in mind and a plan to get there? Or are these just 'destination events' for the NFL and it's existing teams?

AP signs 6th round draft choice Kain Madrano from UCLA who had ties to current LB coach and UCLA LB coach Ken Norton.
AP spends a 3rd round pick on Luke McCaffery when his brother and Adam were there in the F.O. office at the same time before he became GM here in DC.
Current LSU DB coach Corey Raymond, Mansoor Delane's position coach at LSU, is very close to Commanders DC Daronte Jones who has been rumored to be high on AP's list.

The dots are fun to connect but AP better start hitting on talent and not what a coach writes down on paper or who coached him at this college or who he was associated with in SF etc... AP better start drafting from his gut with every pick and hitting on talent or he will find his way on the outside looking in for another job.
 
Thought about this while watching the press conference last week. One thing I still like about Peters is how he starts off by acknowledging and thanking everyone on his team. It's a little thing, but like it a lot. Not sure if/how meaningful it is, but I just don't remember many coaches or GMs who take the first five minutes of their presser to thank the data collection staff and all the little unheralded people. We do need to see more success in the draft and free agency. I think the trades have hampered more than helped. In hindsight, both Deebo and Lattimore were mistakes. Deebo because he's not here and so you traded long term assets for a short term fix on a wasted year. Lattimore is obvious. Tunsil looks like a winner. I just hope I am more right than wrong that last year was more about injury than anything else. It is a little frustrating though to think that this is more like a year one than a year three as the team looks to be radically changing offensive and defensive schemes so it's hard to keep the optimism that we'll see 2024 again because it's unlikely we see that degree of injury two years in a row. Still, circling back to my original thought, I still like Peters and I like how he operates. It's year three, his first draft class should be fully matured. He's had the time to rebuild the roster in his image. Time to see it.

I can't remember if it was Peters saying this or someone else, but I think Peters thinks he hit on his first two number one picks. He feels good about both Connerly and Daniels. I'm still not convinced it wouldn't have been better to slide Coleman out to right tackle and to have drafted an edge or some other position, but I think internally they think they got it right.

I think you are bang on here. This is a big draft for AP, time to back up the reputation we were sold.
 
I don’t see the addition of Deebo as a mistake. It wasn’t a wasted year until it was. He was brought in to be an additional weapon, not to be the main one for an extended period of time due to injuries to Terry and Noah.

If Deebo was signed along with, name that WR at 71, he would need to just be used the way he was last year. There would be a more rounded complement of healthy weapons that he was on the field with last year. And he does have the trust of Jayden.
