The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Receivers will come here in part because of the quarterback.

But nobody is going anywhere without the checkbook and guaranteed money on the table.

If Washington offers Shaheed top money and a chance to be featured in the office and all other things are equal Washington has as good a chance as anyone to sign him.

Pierce may be different as Indy wants to try and create the space and he likes the team.

Older vets like Mike Evans at 33 is primarily looking to win right now so he’s not a player Washington will likely even call.

And that’s appropriate based on where we are, Evans is probably not the best fit for us.

If he brings baggage here he will be cut instantly, otherwise they won’t sign him. He’ll only be here if he’s moderately healthy, in which case he’s worth the camp spot. It seems inevitable at this point so treating it like a big deal probably won’t be enjoyable. Treat it no differently than any other flier, but with high upside. There really is no downside unless you care that much about a little 1-year cap space.
All I see are media reports about Peters and Daniels having the relationship with him.

Peters was part of that front office - you can’t tell me after all Aiyuk did in 2025 that Peters is that anxious to add a guy who neutron bombed his former team.

Aiyuk doesn’t look to me like a guy that just had a difference of opinion and requested a trade, he looks like a guy with emotional problems and someone who is not a professional but an immature crybaby who sulked and refused at one point to meet his contract requirements.

That to me is a far different risk factor.

If we sign him, then the people you reference who know him believe he’s worth taking the flier on. I don’t know him, as long as they aren’t reckless with the prove-it contract, and as long as they also add another starting WR, I’m willing to let them live or die by their own evaluation. That’s the situation this whole staff is in anyways. Will be glad to see them have some balls.

What happened in SF was capital-W Weird, acknowledged. Different, but so was the Desean Jackson situation at the time. Sometimes you take the risk. And this time it’s super cheap. There is no downside and our mentally-stable choir boys sucked ass last year, I won’t begrudge them taking a big swing or two. Who is he going to keep off the roster, Jacory Brooks? I don’t give a shit, to be honest. Take the swing. It’s a unique situation given his preexisting relationship with our franchise QB and our GM. If he’s a trash human or has trash health, they’ll dump him.

Agree, you take the flier on Aiyuk.

However, the key part regarding AP and roster construction i think is that move in isolation is taking one Hell of a risk if that is your only move at WR. Take the flier on Aiyuk, but also bring another receiver in, even if you go that way early in the draft.

With Jayden? We need to stock up the offense. The defense is going to take two years to correct. Lets build a crazy offense while we can

Yes, my support for the move is predicated on them bringing in a starting WR and treating Aiyuk as a lotto ticket

Who? Deebo?

No he doesn't need his head examined, the move made sense at the time. I reference one of the 'best' GMs in the league giving up what he did for Jahan Dotson. Does he need his head examined too? How about another one of the best GMs in the league giving up a draft pick for Brian Robinson and not extending him either? Not every trade is going to be perfect and work out. There are misses all around the league when it comes to these kind of moves, you just have to take your shots and see if it works (and I would argue Deebo worked BTW, he was never supposed to be what we asked him to be last year because of injury, had he played his actual role, this could have been dynamic)
I guess I didn't explain myself correctly. My bad. Yes, Deebo worked out but it cost us a 5th and he was a 1-year rental. If AP would have used the pick on a player, we could have possibly gotten 3-4 years of decent play out of that player depending on how fast he could have adjusted to the NFL or maybe he'd bust. Time would tell. Draft picks are so important to build the roster and so far, he's been ok but not what everyone expected coming from SF. I think we all expected more, I know I did. I could be way off and wrong but I think it's go or no time for AP.

My apologies. I try to type messages and it takes a while to type them up. I have to edit about 50% of them after re-reading them, so my bad. It is what it is. If I could talk my words and they'd type out, it be much easier. LOL

Adding Aiyuk for cheap is an absolute no brainer. If we pay him $10M it’s a bad move.

It all depends on the contract.

But if he can be had for cheap, why wouldn’t you take a flier? Guys hold out all the time. He wasn’t a typical hold out, but that’s exactly what he did.

He may have some issues, but if he’s cheap you cut him. The upside far out weighs the downside - as long as the money makes sense.

Or perhaps Aiyuks friendship with Jayden can mellow his potential issues. He would be biting his pride by coming in on such a low salary

I agree it's disappointing that Deebo wasn't extended, but if you want to look at the return on the investment, Deebo outperformed anything you'd get in the 5th round. This is the listing of the 5th round draft picks this past year.... Again, It wasn't necessarily a 'hit' but I don't think it's to the point that he needs to get his head examined either. It made sense at the time, and for whatever reason Deebo isn't coming back.

There isn’t one hard and fast rule that GMs need to follow with trading draft picks.

If we don’t get Tunsil re-signed, it’s a disaster for what we gave up.

But Deebo? He was productive and we got a year out of him. It’s easy to say we could have gotten 3-4 years out of a rookie, but do we? Is it a guy that just sits on the bench? Or even makes it beyond year 1/2?

Deebo was our most productive receiver. I doubt a 5th rounder would have been. And his production in one year might be better than what a fifth rounder offers for his career.

I have no problem with the Deebo move.

Not directed at you, just further explaining my point that the best GMs make trades all the time that don't necessarily equate to a 'home run.' Two of the best in the game made similar trades WITH US in the Jahan Dotson trade, and the Brian Robinson trade.

The NFL has done such a good job of making the Draft such an event that I think fans sometimes let it become a belief that even day 3 draft picks can make or break your team, and I don't think NFL level executives agree. I don't think it's an accident that the Jimmy Johnson draft board has such a drastic drop in value down the board.

The difference between the 15th pick in the 5th round and the 15th pick in the 6th round is 42 points. The difference between the 15th pick in the 3rd round and the 15th pick in the 4th round is 256 points. They don't view them as 'throw away' picks, but they likely also don't view them as more than bottom 1/3 of the roster type contributors. Potential rotational guys, special teams contributors, or possible low risk, high reward potential like JCM coming off an odd season at Arizona. Obviously if you can get more than that, that's great, but if you think highly enough of a player that they're actually starting caliber, premium rookie contract type players, they're not making it to day 3.

I mean... WR is the second highest paid position. If that $10M is basically completely non-guaranteed, that seems like a OK deal. If it isn't working out, you can cut him after 3-4 games and save most of the salary costs 🤷.

Totally agreed.. teams like the Rams have proven this and look at the Ravens getting Crosby… would they have got a high level great player of the likes of Crosby with their 14th pick… maybe in 3-4 years that guy could be but with Crosby (barring injury) you have 4-5 awesome years left…. To me the value in the draft is the mid round guys who pan out and make a team better… far to many 1st rounders at every position have not panned out…. You have to hit between the 3rd-5th rounds imho…. 1st rounders are 50/50 kinda like Rod Gardner

I heard Keim float $7-$8M on a pod. Also heard Standig say $15-$20M. I’m obviously out at that price, but ok with the former.

people will laugh at this but I don’t see how this guy deserves anything other then slightly above league average… he had what, 1 good season? And he’s been injury prone and now comes with issues from the neck up… no way in Gods green earth would I even consider paying him 15-20m… call the police cause that is robbery

OK, but if you are leaving yourself open to cutting Aiyuk if he pulls a SF type break down that means we are still going after a top of the line wide receiver as well.

Are we going to spend $10M (my plug figure between Keim and Standig) on Aiyuk and then $20M on another player at WR too?

That seems like a LOT of resources going to one position.

We still need a center, a left guard, tight end, running back not to mention we need IMPACT players on defense at all three levels.
