The Front Office: Adam Peters and Roster Construction

Well, so far we have a 12-5 season that looks in retrospect a lot like 2010 and a followup season in 2025 that looks a lot like 2013.

2026 is the rubber match for Peters. HERE is where he shows us what he has to offer.

2026 is the rubber match for Peters. HERE is where he shows us what he has to offer.

If Peters is deferring to his OC and DC on picks to fit what they want, as it has been stated here, then right now he is basically starting over from Day 1. He thinks he has Shanahan but he's got randos running both sides.

I think where my mindset has changed in recent years is that I used to give decision-makers the benefit of the doubt (I was much closer to Primus Porcus line of thinking). Now my mindset is that none of these decision-makers has necessarily earned the full faith and benefit of the doubt of fans. Peters came in with a ton of goodwill, a good reputation, and the assumption he would be better than anyone we’ve had in that role since Bobby Beathard. I am not sure based on what I’ve seen so far that this will be the case. I will watch and I will hope but I am not ‘buying in’ until I see many more positive moves than what I’ve seen so far.
I have soured on him some as well. But in fairness he did build a NFCG roster in his first season as a GM. Yes his second year was not good at all. But a new GM is going to have some grwoing pains. We just need to hope he learned from last years errors.

He built it and then dismantled it and wagered on age.

Interesting that Biadasz isn’t good enough for us because Blough will be installing a scheme similar to Ben Johnson. So naturally Ben Johnson immediately brings him in to assess signing him to replace their retiring pro bowl center.

Maybe they’ll also sign someone even better, but you see how they evaluate Biadasz as at least a worthy backup plan in that scheme? Interesting

But wasn't his strength pass blocking and not run blocking?

For sure. Doesn’t really change my point. He’s good enough to be at least a potential backup plan for Ben Johnson, but not for the guy aping Ben Johnson’s offense?

No, evidently he isn't.

But Nick Allegretti is a must have player, so I am glad we were able to retain him since he would have had so much interest in free agency from other clubs :p

We seem to be good at holding onto players that won Super Bowls with other teams, unfortunately most of these guys have been bit players in the drama and not ones in a lead role.

This is fair. But, it’s pretty impossible to understand if a decision worked or don’t work immediately and even then, it can fall apart of work my accident, too.

For instance (this is not happening, it’s just for a point) we release Lattimore. In the third round, Mansoor Delane is on the board and we draft him.

Now, by pure luck, without any other moves - we look great.

On the other hand, we release Biadasz and we get Linderbaum. Plan executed well, right? Well, what happens if Linderbaum gets hurt and misses 12 games.

Either way, things go haywire a bit.

We can really only judge things based on what we see as fans. Not the inner workings. Which will always make us flawed and unable to give a full scope.

But sometimes we get it right. And sometimes we are way off.

It’s why these forums exist.

I haven’t made a final decision on Biadasz because I don’t have all the info. But my initial decision is confusion.

I get that, and i guess I tend to not react immediately because it is impossible. There have been plenty of players we've looked at and said "Man i can't believe XYZ, it's gonna come back to bite us" just for it to disappear from existence. For 30 years we've watched really bad roster management, so I find myself looking at Peters less critically, because I haven't experienced the real way of 'doing it right.' I also saw a lot of fans around this team chanting that we're failing because we didnt pay Cinci what they wanted in order to get Hendrickson last off season. Had Peters done that, he may not be employed right now. Not every move is successful, and not every lack of move is a failure either. There's circumstances about all of it.

Admittedly it's a combination of a lot of the criticism I've seen regarding roster makeup, so I may come across as being a bit hyper sensitive about individual moves, i get that. I also am not going to say Peters is without criticism, and that every move he's made is perfect, it's not, and i have my concerns so I do hope it doesn't totally seem like some unconditional support... just waiting to see how more of the picture comes together before i get wound up about a couple strokes of the brush.

Yep, I said it a few times - when players are generally good teammates and have some skills - when they aren't good "fits" you give them a chance to be coached by some new coaches. That is a tried and true way to do your business.

I don't know if we'll find out the details on what happened here, but - as I said in another post - my guess is this move is sourced from one of the new coaches (OC, OL coach) based on some feeling they had watching these players, in communication with AP. I don't think this has the AP/DQ smell unless we see a new C on the team soon with some past connections (could happen).

Pretty frustrating, as you pointed out. It's part of the standard "BPA" strategy. You take the best player you can and you trade them if you can't use them. First you need to make sure you can't use them. Then, you trade them. There is either a lot we aren't seeing or this is kind of bush league. Hoping it's the first. Maybe Biadasz girlfriend demanded he move from DC (callback to Champ!). No offense Tyler if you ever read this, just a joke... :D

Well, if Peters is merely taking orders from the coaches and not providing his own input to any great degree he won't be a GM here for long.

These are younger inexperienced coaches and need a firm hand guiding the personnel side.

I don't have an problem necessarily from moving on from Biadasz - but how about we wait until free agency starts and find a starting center we can sign and THEN release Biadasz instead of simply depleting our depth and giving other teams a chance to add to their depth free of charge?

If we had the inside track to sign Linderbaum and that was plain then perhaps I would have no issue with an earlier release - but again Nick Allegretti doesn't give me any confidence at ANY position.

He was a depth player in KC and had a run one year in the playoffs and played in a Super Bowl but Reid discarded him shortly thereafter.

The fact he is still here 2-3 years later in Washington and still in the mix to get on the field in a meaningful capacity is a sign of how far behind we are.

New toy just dropped, covers both draft and free agency so I guess it belongs in this thread:

So far, the only plausible explanation for cutting Biadasz is for cap space. But as another post said either in this thread or elsewhere, the team already had 70+ million cap space before free agency. It's not like there's a day one signing that they need cash on hand NOW that couldn't be cleared when they actually need it.

But sure, the team is stockpiling cash. For free agency. That they didn't use last offseason. But the big spending is going to happen. Soon.

Designating Payne saves the team $22M against the cap in 2026.

So, if you want a bucket of money to chase free agents that's a nice cache of change to add to the pot.

No one is going to confuse Payne with Chris Jones.

This is a surprise (unless his cap hit was untenable, not sure about that).

Diggs has a rep but was a model citizen for NE this year (in the locker room, not off the field. He allegedly choked a woman which is a flashing red flag)

He was allegedly a good mentor to the young WR’s, he was healthy and productive for where he’s at in his career. He’s definitely closer to washed than to his prime, but he was huge for them this past season.

Being willing to cut that sort of valued veteran presence before it’s too late, instead of hanging on too long out of “niceness”/nostalgia…. that’s a big difference between us lucking into healthy 2024 years with Ertz/Wagner/Ekeler and then mistakenly signing up again for it in 2025 and being predictably let down. Role players at cheaper cost? Fine. But relying on them as nearly every down starters too long…disaster. We need to be more cutthroat.

The other piece is we need cash because we had a ton of free agents. We right now, if I did the math correctly, have 63/90 positions. And many of those that we do have are practice squad.

We have to sign 27 guys, realistically 15ish FA for the actual roster.

We have $86M in cap space.

Roughly 6M of that for the rookies. Leaves us, currently, with $80M.

We need to extend the one guy. But let’s leave it at 80. So we have 80ish to sign roughly 15 guys. So a bit more than $5M each.

I think the numbers SIP has been using make the most sense. 3 big swings, a couple minor ones and then chalk.

Meanwhile Dallas is restructing the contracts of their top players to free up cash to make some big free agent moves...

‘Prescott's base salary goes from $40 million to $1.8 million, while Lamb's and Smith's drop to the $1.7 million range. The differences were turned into "signing bonus" for cap purposes to free up space.

While the moves create cap room this year, it adds to the players' salary cap numbers in the future. For example, Prescott's 2027 cap number now will be more than $76 million.
