The Final Cut-Down

Biggest surprise to me was that we kept so many linebackers. From what I've read our linebacking group has been weak. I would have thought that group would have been lighter in favor of other positions even if they hope to snag some players off waivers.

I can see a form of logic.
Since they couldn't seem to find "quality", they went with "quantity".
Strength in numbers. Having a lot of players gives a lot of options, and a higher chance that one of them pans out.
Not that they don't keep looking, like you said. They can still do that, and if they indeed find "quality" somewhere, it only takes an instant to cut one of those guys to make room for the addition.

I guess I can see that. I’m just surprised one of the corners, for example, wasn’t judged better than the linebackers. I also am surprised a bit that we kept so many tight ends though I guess that makes sense since our top three are coming back from injury.

I wrongly assumed Dyami Brown had cost himself a roster spot with his killer drops and lackadaisical-looking body language. But having watched all three preseason games again yesterday and today (condensed versions--I'm not actually crazy), it's not hard to see why the staff decided to keep him around a little longer. The man runs a lot of great patterns. He can set guys up with lean, and can explode out of a break and get separation. His problems begin when the rock actually arrives.

Which is a problem for a receiver.

My guess is in the coaches room they're saying, "yeah but DAMN look at him getting open. Maybe if he gets another shot he'll start catching 500 balls a day from the jugs machine and we'll actually have something."

Yo, Dyami ... do you want it?

Color me skeptical. We did the same routine for 2 seasons with Steven Sims. I’d love to be wrong but I expect to see more of what we’ve seen. An occasional eye popper with lots of drops and lack of concentration in between.

I suspect the loss of Brian Robinson Jr. for a while had something to do with it ... Williams is more in the hammer mold than Patterson.

Robinson goes on the NFI list.
Sounds like his timetable to return may be about the same, as Young's.

I havn't heard anyone talk about this - how did Jonathan Williams beat out Patterson on the roster ?

I’m guessing it probably has to do with blitz pickup and blocking. I haven’t heard anyone say officially, but generally that’s what guys just coming into the league struggle with. Williams is entering his 6th season in the NFL, so I would think his football IQ is higher at this point and that appealed the coaches. Patterson is only in his 2nd season and played sparingly in his rookie year. But I expect we will see Patterson called up from the practice squad at some point this year.

I don’t think either guy has made a compelling case to be on the active roster. And once Robinson is back, likely neither will be.

Yeah, the Robinson situation made one of these guys necessary. I agree Williams doesn’t make the team if Robinson was able to play.

Yea and the fact that Williams never played for the Panthers, does not work well in his favor either.
Although, I hear that he did stay in a Holiday Inn once, in Charlotte, NC.
So that could be why he made it here in the first place.
