Just like the Offense, I think we can start a thread to get into the guts of things. Schematics, play calling, whatever you want to talk about specific to the defense.

This guy is a freak. Also notice Kevin Pierre-Louis reacting well, as well as pre-snap recognition. On top of that Collins was ready to crash down. I like our defensive unit. A couple key pieces and it's going to be truly special.

With the good comes the bad..

an absolute TERRIBLE angle by Apke. Darby likely gets 'killed' for this but the safety that's SUPPOSED to be over the top is attacking a jogging WR on an out route that's covered by zone underneath.. meanwhile a WR is outside man to man and makes a play 20 yards behind him. A good FS intercepts that ball about 30% of the time, and deflects it about 50% of the time.

Apke must have the same dossier on Snyder that TyPo used to hold dear

This guy could be pushing Apke for playing time more and more...

If that’s the hit in question that’s pretty weak imho. Seems the Philthy wr ducked into Apke’s helmet as Apke was going for a hip shot.

Not putting this here to debate the value of Collins, more to show the clip.

This is a big concern with the limited offseason... and it's league wide. Missed tackles and a slightly delayed reaction. Again, game reps in the preseason can get the body moving a bit more reactive at full speed. Hard to actually replicate this in practice at full speed. I think (hope) this gets better as the season goes on.

I’ll say it. Collins is a bit overrated.

This is likely the result of a lack on offense, but it's interesting.

Short field turnovers and giving up scores in the red zone. Not that complicated :) it’s fine to be stingy between the 20’s but games are won or lost in the red zone.

Yeah, we we've been pretty good regarding turnovers for 3 / 4 games so i didn't want to say it was just that. The fact that we're punting a lot puts the other team on our side of the field quite a bit.

I think it’s more losing the field position battle than turnovers. When you don’t sustain drives you almost always are going to be making it harder on the D by putting teams at their 40 or better to begin drives.

So the defense gives up 30 points on the regular these days.

One wonders a couple of things:

Is the front seven talent severely overrated?
Why can't Ron/Jack get more out of what is perceived as the team's strength?

I don't know. It's very frustrating as I think a lot of us hoped the DL was going to be so dominating that it would translate to easier going for the rest of the defense. Not only has that proven to not be the case, but except for flashes, even the DL looks sub-par at times (given expectations). I know that the defense looks solid in most statistical categories. But where it counts - on 3rd down and in the red zone, we are ineffective. Our secondary has gotten exposed all year long, and our LBs are nearly as bad. We are missing pieces - with Ionnaidis gone, Holcomb being out, and others. But I expected more out of the gate. What's been most surprising are some of the looks that JDR is putting these guys in on some critical plays. We showed signs last year of being a more ball-hawking type defense, and were finally starting to force some turnovers. This year, if we get a turnover (such as Kendall Fuller's INT yesterday), it's usually as a result of a QB pressure, vs. a DB actually jumping a route or reading a play well. Landon Collins is the biggest free agency disappointment since Albert Haynesworth, at least so far. Not impressed with him - at all.

Del Rio came into this gig with the reputation as one of the best, hard-nosed DCs in the game. So far, the defense (other than in the opener) has looked nearly as bad as the offense.

I mentioned it in chat and i'll say it again. I have not been a big fan of JDR to this point.

1 play we watched Chase Young in COVERAGE 8 yards down field....

The next play, he pushed the RT into Goff's lap and it was a layup INT for Fuller.

I feel like JDR is getting cute because of how deficient the back end potentially is, and if we were to just take the leash off and let the D-line eat, we would be better for it.

I’ve been somewhat following the box scores and a couple things jump out to me. Most of the drives against the defense involve shotgun, & no-huddle. I’d guess the shotgun is forcing the d-line to wait and react a bit Longer and the no-huddle adds to gassed players who cannot substitute. That and could be some communication issues to boot.
