It is true that teams in the NFL usually don't go top 10 on safety or linebacker or running back unless they believe the player truly projects to being transformational - Adrian Peterson, Sean Taylor, etc.
I remember the Redskins drafting Laron Landry in 2006 in the top 10 after they had already selected Sean Taylor in 2004 and thinking to myself can a team under the cap really afford to concentrate draft capital that closely at one position group and still field a competitive 53 man roster?
Washington at the time thought Laron Landry was the best defensive player in the draft and a future star, they were mistaken and it cost the team over time as the players we passed on became stars for other teams.
But the original thought was still there - even if Landry turned out to be better than he was - would Washington with the existing and added players on the OL, DL, QB, WR, LB, etc. be strong enough to field a consistent contender.
I still think the outcome in terms of wins and losses would be the same.
I remember Ron Wolf saying you build a defense from the front four out and of course we did just the opposite.

He was a roided out body builder more than a football player. Then after Tomlinson punked him he lost what little mojo he had.

Yeah, our front office said he was their consensus best defensive player in the draft and we took him despite having taken Sean Taylor in the top 5 just two years earlier.

From what I remember of that draft that was kind of the consensus opinion. He was great at LSU and I was fine with the pick.

I wasn't fine with the pick because Washington was a team that had a roster with some glaring holes and stacking talent at one position while letting other positions go wanting is not a good NFL strategy.
If Landry at the time was that great of a prospect - in the mode of an Ed Reed or similar - then as a GM I would have looked around to see if a team that specifically needed an impact safety and trade down and pick up additional selections.
As it is our front office was deficient because outside of the Taylor pick we failed on a lot of draft choices in those years.
There was the debacle when Cerrato drafted Thomas, Kelly and Fred Davis with 3 second round picks and none of the three turned out to be long-term performers - in fact Kelly played very few snaps in the NFL and was out of the league. Thomas was cut and went to the Giants and performed there as a kick returner but got almost no reps at the WR position.
Then there was the year we had 2 #1 picks and ended up with Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell.
We had the chance to set the foundation with two high picks and again ended up with players that had issues in the NFL. Somehow Washington failed to test Rogers vision which was closer to 20/60 and prevented him from performing at a high level here - but his next employer got him some glasses and he improved.
Campbell was taken at #25 but unlike a Jordan Love or Lamar Jackson never turned into the kind of starting quarterback for the team that was anticipated.

Those mock draft simulators are way off on the trades . . . either they don't ever offer anything . . . or they go crazy . . . like the PFF one . . . can trade pick 7 to Caroline for their entire draft plus thier 6th and 7th from 2027 . . . i mean, hell yeah!, get it signed before they change their mind!!!! For shits in giggles i did a trade heavy draft and wanted at least a pick in the 1st (ended up being 32) . . . see:

What I've started doing on PFF mock as a house rule is only attempt any trade where you gain at most 1 additional pick, and the trade has to be 90-100% likely to be accepted. I think this makes for more realistic situation.
I like NFL Draft Buzz for the site, but i think the simulator lost it's marbles... could this actually happen?
