The 2026 Free Agency Thread

One advantage we have with Harris as an owner is that while he is a newbie to the NFL, he is a vet sports franchise owner. He's been through pretty much everything there is to go through with his basketball, hockey, and (I think) soccer teams so I don't know he's as likely to be quickly swayed by fan sentiment. His history with his main business and other teams suggests he believes in the long, slow rebuild.
Don’t see him being swayed by fans, but I could see all of the reporting (about needing a #2 and Diggs’ availability) getting onto Harris’ radar and subsequently becoming a talking point when he and AP have check in meetings. Again though, this is likely only a factor if there was a governor on spending. I think it’s quite possible/likely this was just about AP wanting to see how the group looked before making the move for Diggs, waiting on the legal stuff to clear up, or Diggs wanting to wait to sign somewhere (or some combo of those).

Today, I feel better about it than I did last afternoon. I spent my time looking back at some highlights of the 2024 season. Highlights, I know. But in the game where we did beat the Eagles, Jayden hit Jamison Crowder in the endzone for the TD. In either that game or a different one, the commentators were praising Daniels for being able to get so much out of what the commentators were calling a less than stellar receiving corps.

Much love to Jamison and Zacheus, and I still have to admit that 2024 was a season with unbelieable luck, but it got me so stoked to think about what Daniels can do with a receiver who should at least be as good as those two were on their best days.

I can't believe I missed the Socrates derail!!!

Also, do we need a new thread debating which philosopher would make the best head coach?
Marcus Aurelius, for sure 👍

i’ve done a lot of complaining about unspent cap room… but if things go well this year, free agency next year should be real fun with tons of money to spend from the carryover. And also, if somebody really good unexpectedly comes available during the season, we will be in a good position to pounce. I may just be riding the wave of positivity right now, but we could be legit SB contenders by this time next year. Hell maybe this year. All things are possible with Jayden and no Snyder.

1. Well, they barely played together, and neither did Daniels, we never actually saw that plan play out, for a multitude of reasons.
Galdi brought this up, Daniels did not play a full game with Terry after September 11th of last year. Ergo, that means Daniels/Terry/Deebo couldn't have played a full game together after September 11th. I think the only game they played together fully were the first 2 of the season, because Daniels got hurt in the Green Bay game (week 2) and missed several weeks, and Terry got hurt in the Raiders game (week 3) and then missed several weeks. So the only games Daniels/Terry/Deebo played together were the first 2 games of the sason.

When phrased that way, it's really wild.

2. Diggs and Deebo have very different skillsets, and I know which I prefer and why for this roster but that’s me.
I personally like both for different roles. Diggs is a much more polished reciever, can play inside and out, and is much more of a traditional receiving threat.

Deebo is a great move-around weapon. Can line up anywhere. Can take snaps from the backfield, slot, outside, even play a little H-Back if you want him too.

The problem is in order for that to be effective, you need traditional outside guys, so you can use Deebo as the move piece. Keeps the defense off balance, they always have to account for him, etc.

What happened last year is both the traditional receivers got hurt, and all of a sudden, your move guy had to be the outside guy, and that's not what he is or what he's good at.

Right now, if we had a top 4 of Terry, Diggs, Deebo and Williams, that would be one hell of a top 4 group. I'd welcome that in a New York Minute. But if they had signed Deebo instead of Diggs, it would have been the same mistake as last year.

The Diggs signing should have occurred much sooner. The only excuse AP could have that not happening would be Diggs telling him that he wanted to wait but AP should have pushed the signing sooner
I really don't think it matters. I also think Diggs wanted to hold out for as much money as possible. And throwing money at a guy is generally not the answer. I'm fine with when it happened. First week of training camp. He'll be totally ready by week 1.

Now, if it was a situation like 2 years ago when we signed Noah Brown after cutdowns, then it would have taken a month of regular season time to get him worked in.

But this is just fine for a veteran like him.

Yeah, Ertz gets crapped on some from this fan base but he clearly was a target that Jayden really liked -- as Logan has said even at this advanced age Ertz was an elite route runner. Remember the playoff game against Philly -- the WRs were blanketed, it was a one more show, Ertz.

Adding someone like Diggs who is a savvy veteran route runner is tailor made.
I don't think Ertz ever gets crapped on. I have never heard that.

What I have heard, and said myself, is that the version of Ertz we had (vs. the earlier version the Eagles had) no longer had the athletic ability to stretch the field vertically. He was a great possession type receiver, good blocker, really good in the red zone, and a fantastic safety blanket for Ertz.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody say anything else.

The only criticism is that we didn't have any explosiveness from the TE position. I think that's a really fair criticism, but I don't think it's crapping on Ertz in any way.

If anybody has gone farther than that, I'm really didn't notice.

I've also wondered whether making fans happy impacts decision-making? I'm not going to argue that someone like Adam Peters looks to fan opinion to guide him 99% of the time. But the concern over WR2 and their inability to fill that void this offseason was loud with AP getting the blame for the teams failure to improve there. I am sure that even someone like AP hears the noise and feels the criticism. It may well have given him the 'nudge' to get this deal done.
It's possible but I really hope not. If he played fan service, he's basically saying the fans know more than he does, and that's a bad look.

The evidence also really was they wanted another starting vet. They went after the top 2 on the market, Pierce and Doubs, got neither. Then they probably were waiting for Aiyuk, who definitely had the most upside of anybody they could bring in. But then he melted down, so then they turned to Diggs. Yeah, it was Plan D, but they always seemed to have some plan, which would indicate more that they wanted somebody all along than got nudged into it by the fans.

My guess is Peters gave Diggs a deal weeks ago, and Diggs didn't like it. He was looking at the 3 year, $64m deal with $20m cash he got last year and wanted something similar. Something changed over the last few weeks. Maybe Diggs came down and Peters came up, and they met in the middle. Or Peters could have said, "find an offer and we'll match it if you don't like this offer." And he didn't get another better offer, and here we are.

Keim kept saying "they're monitoring" and "they're talking." So clearly this didn't just come together at the last minute.

I'd personally be really disappointed if Peters caved to public pressure on this. I also don't think he did. I also don't think we'll ever know.

I know the wait is frustrating for many fans however, I appreciate it. Most of this stuff works out in the end. Diggs wasn't in a rush to sign a one-year deal, waited to see if a two-year deal would materialize. It didn't. When you're patient, things like the BA meltdown happen. Now being overly patient isn't great but this felt obvious to me months ago when the idea about SD or BA came up. I would have been hesitant to sign BA prior to the meltdown. Here's why I thought that in a response to a post by Burgold on May 1:

I've thought this all along. The team would be taking a massive risk in signing him. I'm not against it, but there needs to be a backup plan, more solid anyway. These are elite athletes and he hasn't played for nearly two years. He may or may not be in shape, but I highly doubt he's ready to be elite like he was in 2023. I don't know that if 85% or 90% is good enough because the difference the worst players in each position in this league are not massively different as a whole. Sure there are outliers, but two years off is a looooong time in this league.

The public meltdown settled it for me and figured Diggs would be the guy.

For me I am optimistic about the season. to me Diggs was the missing ingredient aside from adding a veteran center.
I am optimistic also. I'll be much more optimistic when I see Amos practicing. Center is concerning, but not as concerning as CB. Still.

The only overhang for me about the season.

A. While i don't mind ignoring the national media in all its forms they've been right more than wrong about this team over the years -- granted it wasn't too hard betting against Washington -- and most of them think the team sucks. Now I think they are wrong. But lol I've been wrong before rejecting their thesis.
The National Media is wrong more than they're right. So is Vegas. I did this analysis, I'll see if I can find it and make a thread with it somewhere. The over/unders from Vegas are wildly inaccurate. I went back to 2020, and looked at pre-season over/unders vs. actual results. Something like 10% of the predictions were within 1 game, and like 40% were off by 3+ games. And that trend was true for just about every year. One year (I don't remember which) they were closer. But that was the outlier. (As an aside, this is why I think mustachio Warren Sharp is foolish to use Vegas odds as part of his strength of schedule analysis. If I can figure out the vegas odds are statistically inacurate, I don't know how on earth he doesn't see that and eliminate that component of his analysis. Maybe he gets sponsorship money from them? Who's to say? But it's a flawed way of doing schedule analysis.)

The National Media uses the Vegas over/unders a lot to generate overall opinions of who's good and who's not. It's a good litmus test, and it's easy. None of them are read in on all 32 teams, there just isn't time to fully know what's going on with each team.

Every year, you can find 5 teams the national media is high on, and they'll end up being terrible. And 5 teams they're not high on, and they'll end up in the playoffs. Every year. Same with Vegas odds.

The NFL is completely unpredictable week to week. Let alone before the season starts.

B. Tough division
It might be tough, but it might be tough because there could be 3 contending teams in it. Would anybody be surprised if any of the Rams, 49ers or Seahawks won the NFC West, and 2 if not all 3 of those teams made the playoffs? No. Flip side, with a healthy Daniels and better defense, I could argue any of the Cowboys, Eagles or Commanders could win the east and any of or all of the three could make the playoffs. That makes it a tough division, but not just for us, for all 4 teams. Which means each team will probably take a few more losses than if the division wasn't even.

C. Tough schedule
It's going to be tough on our opponents to play us for sure. :p

For me its about the start, I reject the idea of its OK to just hang in there in the first half and go on a run in the 2nd half. The division is too stacked and the NFC is too loaded for that IMO. They got a new scheme, many new players -- shock and awe just like in 2012 where they beat the Saints on the road. Beat either the Eagles or Dallas on the road, I expect them to take one of those games. Beat Seattle traveling across country for a 1 pm game. Beat the Colts in London. Beat the upstart Giants. now, you got a season. It's possible IMO, will see.
I agree with the fact that they need to start strong. Mostly because there are a bunch of division games early, and those count like 2 games. I also agree they can't just "survive" the first 7 games, they need to thrive in them. It's mostly likely going to take 11 wins to make the playoffs . I'm not saying that because the NFC is tough or not, that was the cutoff for the AFC last year, NFC was 12. 2024, AFC cutoff was 10, NFC was 11. 2023 AFC was 10, NFC was remarkably 9. If you sortof average all that together, 11 is most likely to get you in most years. And if you win 11 and don't get in, well, that's just bad luck in my opinion. And I don't think they can get to 11 wins by just going .500 through the first part of the schedule and then going on a run. I think they need to come out hot and win some big games against teams they might not be favored in, and then they can start being favored in some big games down the road.

We don't know how stacked the NFC is yet. It might be. Or it might not be. Every year, on average, 3 of the playoff teams from each conference don't make the playoffs the next year. And every year, that seems to surprise everybody. But that means if history over the last 50 years holds, 3 of: Seahawks, Bears, Eagles, Panthers, Rams, 49ers and Packers will not make the playoffs. Which 3? Who knows.

But the cutoff for the playoffs is likely 11 or 12 games. I could see the division winner having 11 wins this season if all the teams beat up on each other.

I did not say AP made the move just to satisfy fans, I’m wondering if the noise influenced him. If he had gone with the status quo and the offense struggled or we had major WR injuries and the season crashed, he would be open to massive criticism from the fanbase. I think it played a role (and it wasn’t just fans screaming about it, they got asked about the WR group constantly by the media).

From all reports, the offense was looking better every day. Once the pads went on, Daniels started lighting it up. So, I don't think Peters had a sudden revelation about the wide receiver room. Likewise, I doubt the fans moved his needle. I just think that Peters moves at his own pace. We've been frustrated at how slow he's moved several times over the last three years. It's radio silence and then BOOM, something happens.

I bet Aiyuk is really happy! 🤣

are we really worried that this front office sogned diggs because of fan pressure, or am I reading this wrong?

I didn't read it as worry, and read it more as "I wonder if fan pressure moved the needle at all"

I think it probably moved it a little, but not much. What I wonder about is whether the 49ers injury bug caught their attention and fears someone else would move for Diggs first.

To circle back on AP. Adding the Diggs signing to AP's other FA acquisitions shows incredible growth on his behalf. What a FA class!
And he has really done it while preserving the salary cap. I have not really liked his drafts so far. But he stepped up this offseason. He rebuilt the defense, added weapons on offense and maintained future cap space. About the only negative I can think of with this offseason is what he decided to do at Center.
