I would give him $12M with yardage & accolade incentives to $15M. I’d even make it a 2-year deal with most of the money front-loaded and an easy team out, with a void year or two and some fake money he’ll never earn (unguaranteed in the void years) to make it look more impressive for him and his agent

The problem has to be money and years. I think it would be ok, but if you look at what some of the WR are making he thinking 20 with 15 being the floor. He probably asking 15 base 20 with incentives. If he does not get it he will probably just sit out till injuries happen. 49ers have alot of cap room, we need to make this move now if we are doing this.

Would love to see some protection in his contract just in case he gets suspended by the league for any lingering legal issues...

I'd prefer that they could just void the whole thing if he's suspended for more than 2-3 games.
 
I posted this before, but it was hidden in a larger post. I think it's informative to look at the last contract he signed with the Patriots:

That's really not a nothing contract. He got $19.8m of cash in year 1: the signing bonus ($12m) Active/Game Roster Bonus ($3.4m), Base Salary ($2.9m) + Workout Bonus ($200k.)

That's even quite a bit of cash for one year. And the Patriots are eating $9.7m on the cap this year.

So, with that as the backdrop, I'm guessing he's looking for at least the same as a starting point. I can't think of any reason why he would want less than that. He put up a good season, and probably the primary reason he's available is off the field stuff. And he won the criminal case.

And I would be willing to bet this contract is not something Peters (or, it seems, anybody else) is really excited to sign. I'm pretty sure if somebody were to offer him this deal tomorrow, he'd sign it.

Then what is reasonable based on this as the starting point? My suggestion was basically 2/3 of this deal: 2 years, $42m contract. Signing bonus of $9m, active game/bonus of $2m, I would structure it in a way that would allow the team to get out without having a $10m cap hit in 2027 if it doesn't work. If I'm doing the math correctly, he would end up with close to the same cash in year 1 as he got in New England, maybe a little less.

I think the disconnect is probably the years. I'd bet we want shorter for a WR who will be 33/34 this season, and I bet he wants more and he wants
 
I think he holding out for 20 million. Myers from Jacksonville got 20. Ridley, Jeudy, and pittman jr got 17.5. I think 20 million 1 year would do it. I think 15 probably the floor for him. If you dont pay him I guess Allen is out there and Hill but he is hurt.

20m seems like a price for first week free agents. Usually, free agents at this point of the season have to take a hair cut because teams have spent a big part of their budget (if not their cap.)

It's not my money so if we have the cap room and it doesn't hurt us long term I say go for it, but I'd be wary of any long term cap hits for a guy like Diggs.

I don’t think he’s a viable option, but I’m curious

Nope, still the same story where there’s no reason for the 49ers to cut him just so he can go to another team.

Although it is getting close to the point where the 49ers may cut him anyway, thinking he’s too much of a head case to help another team anyway and actually is more likely to sabotage them.

Either way, I don’t think there’s a single fan left who’s hoping we sign him.

Surprising that Keim wasn't ruling it out in an ESPN piece today. But yeah....
