The 2026 Free Agency Thread

It was widely reported back in April that Hunter will be a full-time DB and an occasional receiver this upcoming season. If that turns out to be true…this report doesn’t lend much impetus into the Jags now feeling comfortable moving BTJ.

Just want to say that it's weird how much we're banking on the offense benefiting by becoming more of a standard, normal offense. We're going to beat them by not being innovative and doing what everyone does!

(Mind you, I feel that way, too, but it's kind of funny.)

Yeah, it’s a little homerism, mixed in with “and controlling the ball will help the defense too!”

With a first time playcaller who, while having a great reputation for his young years, we aren’t sure has a natural feel for play sequencing and setting things up to attack, etc.

It’s a lot of risk tied up in trying to do something technically less risky

True, but doesn't mean it is true. He is too talented to not have him laying more offensively, and he still wants to play both. They have a number of other very talented WR's and would benefit from a WR coming off a down year.

We need a young talent on the outside, there is not much out there and AP might be able to pry him away from the Jags

Sure. I trust Logan, and he likes Chig a lot. But he also doesn’t see him as a particularly crisp route runner, he talked about it in his usual understated way but that's the impression I get. He references being a work in progress on that front and Ertz was special at it. He’s talked about how they’re working on Chig’s releases and even using Ertz as a model for him on that front.

The picture painted for me — not just from Logan, but from everything I’ve heard — is that Chig is a terrific YAC weapon, but not necessarily one of those TEs who might always exactly where he’s supposed to be, when he’s supposed to be there, like Ertz. He’s a completely different flavor of player.

And for all the knocking of Ertz, his yards per catch in Washington was basically identical to Chig’s. Some expect him to constantly rip off explosive plays downfield, but judging by his stats seems like their go to were throws in the flat and then YAC. He also hasn’t been much of a red-zone threat.

Chig is totally different from Ertz — younger, faster, more explosive and definitely more exciting. I like him a lot. But whether he’s actually a better overall TE than the version of Ertz we had is at least debatable.

More to the point, this narrative that “they have a TE who can catch, so that lessens the burden on the WR corps” is bizarre to me. We had that exact dynamic last year and the year before. Ertz was literally Jayden’s No. 2 option. A pass-catching TE isn’t some new wrinkle that suddenly makes a weak WR room less relevant.

And good offenses don’t generally treat this as an either/or proposition. They stack weapons. Good TE, multiple good WRs. One doesn’t remotely preclude the other. Bears have WRs they have TEs who can catch, too. Ditto Pats, etc.

I agree Ertz is a huge loss, he was really Jayden’s favorite target, but we all knew he was slowing down. Chig gives us athleticism we haven’t had at the position, and Sinnott will finally get more opportunities, but expecting either of them to replace or upgrade a guy who could be in the Hall of Fame is unrealistic.

I like our tight ends though. Chig, Bates, Sinnott, and Yankoff are a good group. Chig has good speed, Bates is a great blocker and sneaky good receiver, Sinnott can do both and has upside. I am eager to see what Blough does with them.

What is Sinnott's upside, aside from being under 25 and having virtually no wear at all in the past 2 years?

We'll have to see. There are some whispers that one of Sinnott's problems was scheme fit. Part of me thinks that's nonsense but another part of me is willing to believe it.

What is Sinnott's upside, aside from being under 25 and having virtually no wear at all in the past 2 years?

1. He has high athleticism:

2. He was a good receiver in college, I think his junior year was the best by a TE in Kansas State history.

3. He has proven to have good hands so far in his limited opportunities. He only has 18 targets, but he caught 16 of them, an impressive 89% catch rate.

In general, fans are underrating him for some reason, but coaches like him. Kingsbury said he would play more if he wasn’t behind a future Hall of Famer on the depth chart. Our new TE coach said he thinks ours is one of the best TE rooms in the league. I am looking forward to seeing what he can do when given more opportunities.

I suppose. I see the TE position very differently. I see it as adequate at best, and that depends entirely on Chig being as good as advertised. Bates is a blocking TE, which should not be hard to replace. Sinnott and Yankoff have combined for 18 catches in 2 years. Not being able to earn the trust of any of the 3 QBs last season, not being able to even make it on the field while street free agents at WR were leaned on by the team, gives me very massive doubt that they have untapped talent. If they had shown something worth working with, I cannot imagine the team having so little creativity that they couldn't find a way to get them on the field instead of Moore and Chosen.

I can see Sinnott being used well in the the Hback/FB/TE role. He really has not been used at all in that light. He is a good blocker when on the move. Given that opportunity could lead to him showing a YAC potential in one space after a catch, he is a fun watch with the ball in his hand in space.

My big worry at TE is none of them is a good inline blocker and true receiving threat, they are all one or the other. If Bates goes down who will take over the inline blocking? You are correct, the others have not proven themselves to this point

Yeah, I don’t really see Okonkwo as a solution/replacement for our #2 receiver issue. I do think his usage will differ from how he was used in the past and that change leading to more opportunity for explosive plays. IMO, Okonkwo’s production will be heavily dependent on how well he sells play action. If he’s not great at it, I think we see him roughly equaling his past production. If he’s good (or better) at it, I could see him significantly surpassing his usual numbers.

My guess is the “using Ertz as a model for him” might in (large?) part come down to being able to retain/run some of Kliff’s offense in addition to the changes Blough institutes. Logan also talks about this offense fitting Sinnott better than Kliff’s… I think there’s a fair bit of similarity between Sinnott and Chig’s style of play. Bates will be in-line with the occasional route off PA. Yankoff is kind of the dark horse here IMO (as is Cager I suppose). Logan talks about Yankoff have that snap in his route running that aligns more with Ertz’s style of play. I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes the 53 and sees some snaps.

Very much agree about stacking weapons. Although I give Peters credit for trying (this year), and although I’m perhaps a bit more understanding than you in terms of not drafting a receiver in the 1st or 2nd to date, he absolutely has not done enough. I hope the staff gets a chance to stick around with someone emerging at receiver this year and Peters (hopefully) making a splash at receiver going forward.

Hence why I wrote “if that turns out to be true…” 😉

I have no idea of what to make of Sinnott as far as what remaining potential he has. I think it is fair to say that during his rookie campaign it made sense to work him in slowly, less as a pass catcher because Ertz was exceeding expectations on the field and couple that with the trust JD5 had with him, it would have been hard to take Ertz off the field unless he showed signs of breaking down over the season but he held up pretty well. Sinnott year two I think there is much less of a reason to have kept Sinnott from those opportunities especially as the season started to nosedive beyond repair. Last season at a certain point seemed like the exact scenario you get him out there running routes and seeing if there was something during games you might have been missing from the initial evaluations. Going into this season it doesn't seem like there is any confidence movement on Sinnott ever taking over as the #1 TE on the team so my hope is that this offense gives whatever NFL level skill set he does have (if any) a chance to flourish.

Compared to Sinnott, Luke McCaffrey has been an all pro.

It's not Ben Sinnott's fault that Washington took him in the 2nd round. But I don't know how any of us can look at this decision and not have serious questions about it. Based on his production/performance so far, it seems to have been a significant overdraft. He's been available for every game except one for two straight seasons and has been targeted 18 times and is averaging 4 yds/game. I guess the good news is, he caught 16 of those balls, lol. Biut that is about as close to not contributing at all as you can get.

If he can't show us something in season 3, I think you have to call it a busted pick and move on. Good players show they are good. A 2nd rounder needs to be good. Getting drafted in that part of the draft you are expected to be a starter - probably right out of the gate - not to be a project. I get that pass catching isn't the only role for a TE - but for God's sake - you are a TE and generating offense is a pretty big part of your position. I'm sure Sinnott is a good guy and I hope he turns a major corner in 2026. But so far, I'm wondering why we are being so patient with a player who has shown almost zero ability to positively impact the offense.

The Sinnott convo is off topic but given I just gave the fair complete assessment of what he's done so far, I don't imagine the discussion will derail the thread :rotflmao:

Once Ertz got hurt I hoped to see Sinnott emerge. He didn't at least not as an offensive threat. I'm holding out hope that some of that was scheme and usage, but clearly Peters and Blough decided they needed a TE1 and didn't believe that was Sinnott. Chig's signing automatically puts Sinnott back to TE3, assuming Bates takes the Donnie Warren role and Chig is Clint Didier. Maybe, Sinnott can be Terry Orr and produce as an H-Back or hybrid FB, but so it's not a positive for him that we just don't know that he can do anything great yet.

I will say when he gets targeted, Sinnott catches the ball. He makes the most out of his very limited opportunities, but his opportunities just shouldn't be so limited. Again, I really wanted him to show up in those last few games after Ertz was sidelined. I'll root for the kid. He wears our colors, but he's still all potential and you don't want that heading into year three. The only guy I really remember being a bum for several years and then breaking out in a big way was Chris Thompson. I'm sure there are others, but Gruden also loved Thompson and believed in him in a way I don't see any of the coaches believe in Sinnott.

sorry, been away for a few days and just catching up… Looks like Jayden has turned on Aiyuk! This is great news as I assume it ends the saga from our perspective. Diggs or Allen as a stop gap continues to make the most sense, but I won’t be upset if they don’t bother with an old guy like that. If they do, I’d still prefer Keenan (I know people keep saying he’s going back to the Chargers, but I would think it would’ve happened by now if that was the case). Either way, Jayden’s health is far more important than tertiary receiving options and I think we all would agree if we can have one thing go right this year that would be it.

I’m keeping hope alive as well with Sinnott. Back in the day TE’s weren’t even expected to do much until year three. I know things have changed and guys are getting their chances sooner, but players still mature at different rates and tight end is a complicated position. Clearly he won’t be a superstar, but hopefully he’ll blossom into a solid contributor this year.

The unlikely Diggs hopes are dead as well, he’s back in court with another explosive case, this time sexual assault. Some dude who has 100 pages of messages between them just turned them over to the court. We’ll be staying far away.

So…barring an unexpected release across the league or trade, we probably know our WR corps now. Yikes.

Makes me think teams knew about this Diggs issue looming.

Diggs and Aiyuk have removed themselves from being signed.

The FA WR cupboard is closing on its own and there are few teams along with Washington needing upgrades at the position.

Just a guess, but It might be based on his red-hot career output of 16 catches for 142 yards. In two full years. As a second round pick.

We haven't exactly been loaded with receiving options, and even with a team decimated with injuries and poor offensive talent, Sinnott still couldn't produce anything of note.
