Actually it’s the opposite, his only remaining leverage is literally to just show up the next time the team has a mandatory report date, or his career is over and his contract will never even hit the 49ers cap again as they place him on the Did Not Report list.

He literally just has to show up and make his contract and presence in the building real again, and everyone agrees they’ll cut him.

It’s his only move and the only leverage he has. Anything else is just engaging in a one-way pissing match into the wind.

What he’s doing now doesn’t force their hand on anything, it’s just annoying and they’ve already decided to be petty. He’s not going to get released by being annoying.
 
I know it’s performative. I don’t care. It doesn’t look good. If he was Randy Moss I’d live with it. But he’s not. No thanks.

It's a preview of how he can handle contract disputes and negotiations. Specifically, that he isn't going to go through any steps to negotiate or dispute. He's going to drop some flaming hot tiktok dances on X and assure us that a nameless entity is going to give his opposition the belt.

I'll stick with the McLauren "I am a loyal mercenary" sob story, thanks.

This WR room as currently constructed cannot afford to “not” take a chance on someone like Ayiuk, even with his antics. No stone unturned. We all know many WRs are divas to begin with, so nothing new there. If there is even a shred of chance he can make the WR group better, you gotta take it.

Agree, it’s unprofessional and embarrassing really. Any credible front office will stay a million miles away from Aiyuk.

Throwing off the culture and tone of the room for a guy like that is far worse than rolling with what we have.

Do I think our receiver room is okay as constructed? Absolutely not.

Do I think Aiyuk, skill wise, improves the room? Yes.

Do I think the team would react well to the way he acts if it’s even remotely like it is? Absolutely not.

Chemistry matters. Dude has been using Commanders shit as props in his videos. Hell no.

And if "it can't go on" is the final outcome, it doesn't matter if it's the result of pure toxicity or him being the good guy who was right...the end result is exactly the same. He'll be off the team, and he'll be happy. And he's got so much money in his bank account that that seems to be what matters to him vs. a bunch of extra 0's.

If he comes in and puts up good numbers, all this stuff with the 9ers will just fade into the past.

You have it backwards, his situation is a bit more unique.

Most of the time when NFL players want leverage, they "Hold Out". But Aiyuk's situation is different from most NFL players. This is a rare case where he needs to "Hold In" as it were. He has absolutely zero leverage by staying away. He only gains leverage by showing up.

Holding "Out" (for Aiyuk) = Zero Leverage
  • Is exempt from counting against the roster
  • Does not hurt their Salary Cap
  • The team does not pay him any Cash ever
Holding "In" (for Aiyuk) = High Leverage
  • He now counts against the roster
  • His contract hurts their Salary Cap
  • The team has some Cash payments that come due over the summer and a gigantic sum that comes due in September.
 
He’s saying “it’s Strange with a capital S” because he’s not allowed to get on TV and look into the camera and say “this guy is a fucking moron with a room temperature IQ, there’s not much else to say about it”
 
I think a lot of the WR group speculation/anxiety has to do with Terry due to his age and finally taking on the kind of injuries last season that took away most of his season. I think the WR room is a different group if Terry returns and is relatively healthy this season and performs like he still has a couple seasons of prime level left. When you have a superstar leading the group it changes a lot, but if Terry takes a step or two back, it doesn't mean he might not drop off a ton as an individual contributor, but it could lessen the effect of elevating the WRs behind him.

At his age, there’s no amount of production that can ensure he has multiple seasons of prime left afterwards. Every year will have to be taken as its own adventure in that regard, guys can fall off at any time and non-HOF type WR’s usually fall off hard when they do. Very rare to find a “very good” level WR like Terry who stays healthy and produces into and/or past his mid-30’s.

Maybe he’s one of the rare unicorns but you can’t plan for it. There is no level of 2026 production this year that makes him safe to rely upon in 2027 and beyond, it’s harsh but true. We’ll need backup plans even if we retool his contract and keep him around

The answer: Brandon Lloyd

On Saturday March 11, 2006, the San Francisco 49ers traded Lloyd to Washington Redskins in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2006 NFL draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft. His first season in Washington is widely considered a failure, as he caught 23 passes for no touchdowns. According to Howard Bryant of the Washington Post, citing NFL.com, "Lloyd suffered through the worst season for a starting receiver in the Super Bowl era... No starting No. 2 wide receivers in the NFL started more games (12) while producing less (23 catches, 365 yards)."

Lloyd never made it out of Joe Gibbs' doghouse, due to a questionable attitude and alleged poor work ethic. Later, Lloyd admitted as much, that he was in fact disrespectful to the Hall of Fame head coach.[12] On Sunday, November 4, 2007, Lloyd was listed among Redskins inactive as the team travelled to play against the New York Jets. Citing the reason behind the move, Gibbs said that Lloyd had been told to remain behind in Washington as disciplinary action for missing important team meetings. Lloyd would spend the latter part of the 2007 season on injured reserve after having snapped his collar bone while making a diving touchdown catch during team practice.
