The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Luke McCaffery, played in 8 games (he technically played in 9, but was hurt early in his 9th game, and played 0 offensive snaps), and was on a 23 rec 445 yard, 6 TD pace. He stays healthy and puts up those numbers, how much better do we feel about him? A 30-35 rec. 550-600 yard 6 TD season is not out of the question.

Christian Watson just signed a $110m extension putting up those kinds of numbers.

People are tearing them up for that contract (not totally dissimilar to the Pierce overpay) but that shows the value NFL teams place on guys who stretch the field on the outside and open up the offense, regardless of actual concrete production. Last year Watson was a 17.5 YPC guy but he’s hit 21.5 YPC before as well. Sort of similar to how random blocking TE’s sometimes get “overpaid” in fans eyes for non-production related skillset, I think long deep threats have a similarly skewed market that people are always surprised by.

McCaffrey, who runs more in the slot than on the outside, can definitely still blossom but I think we’d all be surprised if he became a 20 YPC-ish deep threat on the outside each week that has to be accounted for by defenses. It’s not impossible with his athleticism but it would require a leap.

Would help us hugely to have that in-house

Maybe you're mixing this up with a post from months ago where I compared Washington's and the Giants' low-cost WR signings. My point then was that if I had to choose between Washington's collection of Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson types versus the Giants' version, I'd probably take the Giants'. But my larger point was that both approaches were underwhelming. "Meh" versus "slightly less meh" isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

My argument has always been the same: go get a legitimate WR2.
That's my bad then. We agree there--the signings were meh (and the recent signings make me wonder about Nabers knee)...
Back to point B, maybe I am delusional and feel too good about the roster, and that's my problem. I was listening to Walder on Finlay a little whole ago, and he doubled down on the national narrative of hey sorry playoffs are a long shot. Many think this is a bad roster. I think its a good roster. I want to add more.
Here is Walder's Power Index:

I heard Walder too, and he makes good points, but I cannot look at some of the rosters and ask how they can put them so high--primarily Green Bay. Jacobs is nearing being washed, Doubs is gone, Kraft is good, but coming off a major knee injury, Watson is basically a rich-man's LMC, but can't stay healthy. They lost Halfley. LaFleur is on a hot seat. They've been mediocre three of the last 4 years. I think there are a lot of questions around that team. They're ranked #6.

I could see the Niners falling off too--most of their primary offensive players are older than dirt and already injury prone: CMC is really worrisome if I am a 9ers fan. He's 30, has a long injury list, coming off an astronomical carries and touches. Also, Williams, Kittle, and they added Evans who are all mid-to-upper 30s now and coming off injury plagued seasons. None of their younger talent really thrills me.

The Bears would not surprise me if they ended up with 6 wins.

The Vikings are lead by two poor QBs (but at least the have great receivers amirite? 🤣), had a poor draft, can't stop the run (I think this is one of the major reasons they moved on from Kingsbury--he completely abandoned the run against them), but the rest of the defense should be good.

The Bucs went 8-9 in the shittiest division in the history of sports.

Cowboys are getting way too much pre-season love for an incoming Bad Dak year; I saw someone posted a tweet showing he and Caleb were the luckiest QBs when it comes to INTs. That sort of metric almost always regresses:

I think so.
Agreed. So if I were AP I'd be talking with NE about what sort of compensation they were looking for. Then I'd offer them something less. To have a legit proven boundary WR3 who could already be a lower grade WR2 puts the team in a much more comfortable spot as leaves plenty of growth opportunities and competition for the rest of the WR group

Boutte would be one of those I would happy give up pick(s) for--only 24. I don't see NE parting with him though.

I hear you but he is going into the final year of his rookie contract, I think he is due $3.6. They do have expensive new contracts in that WR room and that high priced competition will lower his production and trade value. If they trade him now they can probably get equal to a 6th rounder.

Yeah, and Finlay recently did a segment asking whether the national media is sleeping on this team. Sheehan has made a similar point from a different angle, questioning why Washington isn't getting the same injury-related benefit of the doubt that other teams get.

Take Cincinnati as an example. Their disappointing season is largely written off because Joe Burrow got hurt, and now the expectation is they'll come back with a vengeance. So why doesn't Washington get similar consideration when Jayden missed significant time? Of the local media personalities, Sheehan is probably closest to where I land on this team: they're good, they're a playoff-caliber roster, but they're still one legitimate weapon away from being a real threat. And he's hardly comfortable with the idea of them standing pat.

I think the national media is overlooking a couple of major things:

A. Jayden's absence mattered—a lot.

This team is dramatically different when he's on the field. He's not a player with a long injury history, so I don't view last season as some new normal. Beyond that, when he did play, the supporting cast wasn't exactly helping him. The receiving corps was thin, and the offensive line got off to a rough start before settling in as the season progressed.

B. This defense has a chance to be legitimately good.

I like what Daronte brings as a coordinator. I like the scheme. And I think the front seven has a chance to be one of the strengths of the team. Nationally, I still think people are viewing this defense through an outdated lens.

That said, there is one area where I think the national media is absolutely right:

The supporting cast, particularly at receiver, is among the weakest in the league.

And no, I don't think the offensive line is so dominant that it completely offsets that issue. Conerly is still developing. Coleman struggled at left guard and appears to be getting another opportunity there. We don't yet know whether Allegretti can be a quality full-time center. The good news is that this isn't some impossible problem to solve.

Add a legitimate veteran weapon—someone like Diggs—and suddenly the entire receiver room makes more sense. All those WR4-type players become quality depth pieces instead of players you're counting on to fill major roles.

I like Dyami Brown as a backup. I don't like him as my starting Z receiver. Same with Burks.

As for the argument that maybe McCaffrey, Lane, or another young receiver breaks out, I get it. But my response is simple: I don't want to spend a potential Super Bowl-caliber season running experiments.

If one of those young players is truly emerging, you'll likely see signs of it in camp. And if it happens, great—you adjust accordingly. New England has done that before by spreading reps around and letting players earn their place. Now it looks like Douglas may be separating himself as their No. 3 option.

But that's exactly my point. If a young receiver forces his way into the lineup, that's a good problem to have. I'd much rather enter the season with too many capable weapons than spend another year hoping one develops quickly enough to fill a role that should have been addressed already.

Damn is he really due that much? I thought he fell to like the 6th round despite his early college pedigree, I didn’t realize late rounders were getting dollars like that in year 4 of their contracts

Whoever deals for him would want to extend anyways, I imagine.

In a vacuum it’s not a big number obviously I just thought late round contracts were closer to vet min wages

That's what I thought too but yes just rechecked, his cap hit is $3.7mil

I'd think AP would try to soften a 6th rounder by making a combo of swapping picks maybe with a 7th or something like that

I would trip over myself to make that deal.

If that's all it takes I'm on the Boutte train 🤫

This role, even with limited production, just keeps getting more valuable to teams in this league

Woh, the top 3 guys are what you expect, but isn't Jayden Reed a shifty slot guy? He must be getting the ball in wide open spaces for YAC.

Checking it and yeah, like 40% of his yards are YAC and his catch rate is absurdly high. So this seems mostly schemed up looks that he's phenomenal at.

I graduated from High School with Jalen Coker's mom. Man, I'm old...

Yeah definitely a bit of an anomaly on that list, in terms of skillset. Speaks on some level to LaFleur’s scheme and Love’s timing. And probably Christian Watson’s effectiveness clearing out coverage by successfully threatening teams deep

I don't think that's a reputable source but you don't need to delete. You're just sharing a post - whether it's utter BS or conjecture (which it likely is) - is another matter.
