What defines a Super Bowl window?
A variety of factors but the one that reins everywhere is a franchise QB on a rookie contract because when he comes off of it, his salary will take up much of the cap. You can fill out the roster more now than you can when Jayden gets paid

Come on now. Wagner was such a liability week after week. He had the speed of a defensive end at best. Teams were hunting him. Wagner himself was defending himself online against fans. It's not easy to bench a washed up legend who you coached as a young man and was great the year before.

When we were sucking, the coaches said one of their solutions was to play Magee more. Every week, reporters asked DQ about benching Wagner, how hard it is to sit a past great player, will he play Magee more. You don't remember any of the Wagner issues last year?

This is overstated. Yes Wagner had lost a step and was a liability in coverage, but he was still a tackling machine. He finished 5th in the NFL in tackles I think. And he was still a great green dot guy.

Yea and probably led the league in tackles way down field. It was talked about a lot on here. Stats like that don't show everything

2024 19th
2025 18th
2026 8th

They did pick it up this year. But over the first 3 years keeping that cash spend down. So we improved but still feels like we are limited by something other than what is best for the on field team.View attachment 14904
So, why are we so high now in cash spent vs. cap space and why weren’t we in previous years?

We have 20ish million in dead cap, which isn’t particularly high but it’s higher than we’d want.

The answer is very likely the way we are using one year deals and guarantees, which keeps the cap number high but uses a ton of cash.

To Primus Porcus point, I think the thing here is not so much money they are spending, but how they are spending it.

I can’t really call the ownership group cheap. That stadium is a big deal and is incredibly costly.

I don’t love the front loaded & 1 year contracts they are throwing out like candy… but that might have been one of the only ways to get some of these guys.

The problem here is we keep kicking the can down the road. We will need to replace all of these guys on one year deals & those with extremely high cap numbers where we can save some cash.

That said, I’m not sure Terry is as much of a goner after this season as many think, even with his large cap number.

He was clearly the better option according to the coaching staff. We can disagree… but they played him because they thought he was their best chance of winning.

I don’t know if Magee is any better. Neither does anyone else here because we haven’t seen him.

Where I disagree is that we didn’t play our young guys over the aging vets down the stretch despite being long out of the playoff convo.

Wagner also led the team in tackles for a loss.

If you dig into the numbers, you’ll see they confirm what I said, he was a liability in pass coverage but otherwise pretty good.

I don’t even disagree he was declining and needed to be replaced, and I am glad we have some new young linebackers. I just think the negative stuff about him is overstated.

For us? We were one game away 2 years ago. We have an elite franchise QB. We now have solid pieces all over the roster and with a few additions could have a roster that with Jayden, should compete to win the NFCE or go super deep in the playoffs.

Clearly you can win a SB at any juncture of a QB's contract. But the thought process by some is if you got a franchise QB on a rookie contract that's a unique opportunity.

I can see the financial advantages of a QB on a 1st contract. But how many won a SB over the past say 10 years? Mahomes and who else?

Sheehan had a really good segment I just caught up on about why the national media seems down on this team. Listening to him, his view probably lines up the closest to mine among the local voices. Like me (and a few others here), he points out that Jayden still hasn’t had a true #2 receiver in his career and thinks that’s a real issue. But he also believes they’ll still have a good season in spite of it.

I haven’t heard him fully take it to the next level — whether this is a Super Bowl-caliber team . I think Peters did a good job this offseason, but not a great one. Maybe he was limited by budget or circumstances, that’s fair. But at the end of the day, better drafting would have this roster in a stronger place. As it stands, I don’t think it’s a Super Bowl roster. I think it can get there though with a good WR add and a CB.

When you step back and listen to Sheehan and others react to the national narrative — it’s pretty bleak. Around here, most of the debate is about whether the team did enough to be great, with some of us pointing out that it’s a solid roster but not a complete one, especially given the questions at offensive weapons.

Now, if the national rankings and projections are right — and this team ends up closer to sucking than competing — that would make for a pretty rough combination of season and heading into 2027. I don’t think that’s how it plays out. But I also don’t fully buy the idea that this roster has everything it needs to make the SB.

If anything, I’m much closer to the optimists than the pessimists.

While the New England Patriots were going from also-ran to the AFC title last year, the Washington Commanders were hurtling in the opposite direction.

After winning 12 games and making the NFC Championship Game in 2024, an injury-ravaged Commanders squad went 5-12 in 2025.

Much of the reason for that collapse was the NFL's worst defense, and the team went hard at that situation in the offseason.

Rookie linebacker Sonny Styles takes over for Bobby Wagner inside after being drafted seventh overall, and Washington spent big in free agency on the pass rush with the addition of edge-rushers Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson. Safety Nick Cross and cornerback Amik Robertson were signed to bolster a bad pass defense.

Offensively, the team spent a Day 2 pick on wideout Antonio Williams, who the Commanders hope will step up as a complement to Terry McLaurin. But an average offensive line didn't get much better, and the skill-position talent around quarterback Jayden Daniels isn't especially imposing.

In an NFC East that is shaping up to be a much harder division in 2026, the Commanders have a better chance of finishing last than first.

Verdict: Pretender (Sell)

NY Giants

There isn't a team in this article that won fewer games in 2025 than the New York Giants, but it's the dawn of a new day under new head coach John Harbaugh.
And there's reason for optimism.

Granted, much of that optimism hinges on the return of a healthy Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers—all three missed significant time in 2025. But if they do, it's a solid skill-position core playing behind a top-10 offensive line that added a Day 1 starter in Round 1 rookie Francis Mauigoa.

The defense features a litany of new faces. Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is gone, but the team still had a formidable duo of edge-rushers in Brian Burns and Abdul Carter. There are new inside linebackers in veteran Tremaine Edmunds and 2026 No. 5 overall pick Arvell Reese. The secondary got a bump with the addition of cornerbacks Greg Newsome and Colton Hood.

If there's a team poised to make a huge jump from the outhouse to the penthouse in 2026 a la last year's New England Patriots, the Giants are that squad.

Verdict: Contender (Buy)

6 out of the 10 winners were Mahomes and Brady.

Burrow and Goff and Hurts made it but lost.

Wentz took them to the playoffs, Foles finished it and Foles was cheap.

I saw somewhere that Hurts contract was still affordable in 2025 but am too lazy to look to confirm. (Just did it was 21 million and change)

I've not done a deep dive into it, I've seen the narrative so many times, its beaten in me. Does it not matter that much and its overplayed? I don't know. But it seems intuitive to me that it will be easier to build a roster with Jayden at 10 million on the cap versus 65 million.

So you guys admit he was he was bad against the pass but you want to hype up these tackles in spite of us being last in the NFL in defense and 30th against the run. He made a ton of tackles 8 plus yards downfield

So everyone else has seen this happen in sports except you? You've never seen the vet, especially the legendary vet get playing time over the younger, better player just because of who he is? It happens in literally every sport. You think that it's easy to bench a guy like that, especially when he isn't willing to take a step back?

I remember going way back to people talking about how Cal Ripken was killing the Orioles. How he was clearly done and is hurting them but they can't bench him while he's got the streak going

You’re right. I’ve never seen that. Not once. Not in my playing, coaching or fan viewing career.

My point is: if they REALLY thought the guy behind him was better, they’d have played him. And, to add to that point… if they REALLY thought Magee was the guy they wouldn’t have added Chenal and Styles.

Magee may wind up fine. But he probably needs more development. And that’s okay.

But if he’s great I hope we put that on film in preseason. Always room for more good players on the roster.

Surprised posters are so defensive about calling the owners cheap. I won’t call them that, but leaving so much cap room every year is suboptimal for sure. It’s their money, they certainly don’t have to spend it. But then don’t tell us you’re doing whatever it takes to win because you’re not. And I don’t care what they’ve spent to buy the team or on the stadium—those are investments that they will make billions on. I just care about the team on the field and spending 20-30% less than most other teams on talent is not a winning formula.

If you already trust the FO and coaching staff's evaluation of a player who isn't on their roster and hasn't played in 2 years, I'd think it would be quite easy to trust the FO and coaching staff's evaluation of a backup linebacker who has been on the roster and actively played and practiced in front of them for 2 years.

Coaches do have their pets. But those pets are usually the ones they handpicked themselves and want to prove were good picks. Lord knows Jay Gruden wanted and NEEDED to see Ryan Grant and Trey Quinn play. With Quinn not finding a reason to play his own linebacker that he drafted 2 years ago, I think it's safe to assume that he doesn't have a bright future in front of him. I would not be shocked at all that the little hype he got was to soften the blow if they got no good linebackers in the offseason and had to make the best of it. Like the team has been saying about the WRs.

The other part of me says we weren’t ever really ever in on Pierce. We made an offer that was at market but we knew he probably wouldn’t take simply so they could say we made an offer and look better in the eyes of the media / Jayden.

And while part of me really understands that approach for the media/fan relations… that would be a deceit on Jayden, which I don’t love.

And while I do understand they need to save money for Jayden… what happens (and this is worst case scenario and one that I am NOT saying will happen) if Jayden has another injury plagued season? That money we tabbed on his new contract may not need to go there if we go in another direction or can get him for less due to durability concerns.

I just have so many strategy questions and we may not ever know what the thoughts are behind a single one of them. But from the outside in I’m just not sold on this front office’s overall approach to building this team from a sky high bird’s eye view.

I am more than understanding, though, that it’s possible I’d feel differently if I were in the building and understood the behind the scenes stuff.

But I’m not, so I can only judge what I see.
iirc we made the highest offer to pierce. if the intention was to just posture for the sake of positive public sentiment, that was a bold gambit.

And if we really did offer that much for him, and we are on a cash budget, then we wouldn’t have a lot of our other signings. All the answers lead to more questions.

You do realize that DQ coached Wagner in Seattle and help propel him to greatness, right? He was one of his favorites long before Magee. Wagner is a hall of famer who was great the year before. You think that it's easy to just sit him?

Aiyuk was an All pro in this league. He's worth taking a shot on. It's not about trusting them. They are taking a shot on a once great, difference maker who is your franchise players good friend, ex teammate, who he had great chemistry with, and you are getting him on the cheap. You want them to say no?

DQ can see for himself that Wagner is aging and what it does to his ability to cover. If Magee is as good as you hope, Quinn would plan around using him this season instead of drafting a linebacker with his first overall pick.

The team is passing on other available WRs who could immediately help this team. If Aiyuk doesn't pan out, the team would have wasted their time waiting for someone who can't help. You are satisfied with that risk because you trust the FO's valuing of Aiyuk. I again say that if you trust their ability to evaluate a WR who isn't on the team and hasn't played football in 2 years, then you should have a very easy time trusting their ability to evaluate a player who was handpicked by them, practices in front of them, and plays in front of them for the past 2 years.
