That's not uncommon though.

A lot of players have large cap hits towards the end of their contracts and aren't worth anything in trade.

Look at Watson, Murray and tagavailoa, huge hits and two of them are gonna play for someone else.

Aiyuk, massive cap hit and they cant get shit for him.

At least Payne is worth something to us.

We are still almost assuredly spending more than we are losing next season. The comp picks aren’t really going to come into play until the Jayden extension.

Let’s say Payne signs a contract in the top tier salary range that nets a 3rd round comp pick. If we sign a player in the same tier, that comp pick is neutralized. It’s a wash.

They line up our top departures and top new signings and they start cancelling each other out. If we lost Payne and Terry to big contracts elsewhere, and we sign just modest free agents, yes we would be owed something and those 3rds would get dinged into say 4ths or 5ths based on the size of the contract for the players we sign. We are going to have a lot of cap space again though and plenty of improvements to make. Highly likely we end up with nothing.

If they draft well and sign good FA’s, over a couple years we will build to the point where we are re-signing our own guys, letting good players leave in FA, and don’t have the cap leftover to spend a lot. Thats when the comp picks show up. Like the Eagles and Ravens.
