The 2026 Free Agency Thread

Not everyone believes in the FO like you do. I think that’s important to remember.

That said, I like the moves we HAVE made. Which is a good thing.
I will say this…I am more in on the approach this year than I was a year ago. You are seeing an effort in bringing in guys who are entering the prime years of their careers/ascending in Oweh and Chenal. There is more of a long growth approach as opposed to win now. That to me should always have been the way to go. Again…2024 was both a blessing and a curse.

I am not as high on Chenal as many, but I do like him. In particular I think his speed and his violence are positive. But I don’t put him in the same league as Lloyd, for instance.

Still, a positive move.

Sure, no argument there. Lloyd was top of the market and the money speaks for that. What do you think Chenal lacks?

I agree. I like our FA approach a bit better this year, dislike our coaching approach. Six of one half dozen of another.

But we are doing positive things with the moves we’ve made so far. If we start giving Jayden weapons things look solid.

To me Chenal is a big deal. And this isn't me speaking post signing. After reflection before FA started, he was the one I said I wanted at LB. I spent a lot of time on him on the draft thread when he came out.

He's sort of a poor man's Jack Campell but not that poor. Freakish combination of size, strength, speed. Perfect for the Flores defense, swiss arm knife. Tone setter, too.

Inside the rise of Leo Chenal, the Chiefs’ most underrated defensive player

With a microphone in his right hand, Chenal energized the crowd, lifting his arms and encouraging the fans to increase the volume of their roar. He pounded his chest twice before he flexed his large, muscular arms for the crowd.

Mitch Holthus, the Chiefs’ longtime radio play-by-play announcer, hosted a short interview with the rookies. Holthus, sensing Chenal’s energy, asked the linebacker only one question: “Leo, what do you bring to the table for the (Chiefs) Kingdom?”

Leaning forward with a smile, Chenal knew the perfect way to describe himself as a player.

Violence and physicality, man!” Chenal shouted, the crowd producing an even louder cheer. “That’s it. I am addicted to hitting people. I love it. I can’t get enough. That’s what I came here to do.”

Ask anyone in the unit who its most underrated player is, and the response will be Chenal.

“The guy is just consistent, physical and reliable,” safety Justin Reid said. “You know he’s going to win his gap and he’s hell for other teams to prepare for. He’s a really fun guy to play with. The guy can play whatever.”

Over the past month, The Athletic has asked many of the Chiefs’ defenders a simple question: Have you played with anyone like Chenal before? Every player but one said no.

While the Chiefs have two star players on defense, pass rusher Chris Jones and cornerback Trent McDuffie, Chenal is the most versatile player. In 145 defensive snaps this season, Chenal has played five positions — both off-ball linebacker spots, defensive end, defensive tackle and slot cornerback.

“It’s always nice getting on the field more, so I’ll take it,” Chenal said, smiling. “It’s really fun to be able to expand (my role) even more. I need to really know any (play) call that we have in.

“It’s just an honor to be in that position and have more stress on your shoulders because it means (the coaches) trust you.”

By most advanced metrics, however, Chenal’s performance has been significant to the Chiefs’ defensive success. Chenal is one of the highest-graded Chiefs players, earning a 78.7 overall, according to Pro Football Focus, including the team’s highest grade on run defense (80.2). He has generated seven stops and allowed just 17 receiving yards when in coverage as the nearest defender, according to Pro Football Focus. He has also missed only one tackle and has not committed a penalty. When Chenal has been on the field, the Chiefs have had a successful snap, by expected points added, 55 percent of the time, according to TruMedia.

“Pound-for-pound, he’s our strongest guy on defense,” longtime coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said of Chenal. “He loves to play. You give Leo any challenge, like, ‘Hey, I need you to do this this week,’ he says, ‘No problem.’ If you feed him something, you know it’s going to get done exactly the way you asked him to do it.”

Production. But that doesn’t mean he can’t get there. It’s not so much what he lacks vs. how much I would have liked Lloyd.

Again, don’t get it twisted. I like the signing.

Is Oweh as good as Myles Garrett?

No. But is that any reason to limit our enthusiasm about the player in front of us?

Same deal with Chenal.

He's volumes better than any linebacker we have had on this roster in the 2020's.

It's also a bonus that he has experience WINNING in the NFL.

I guess one good thing to not signing some of these huge WR contracts is the ability to shift over to the front 7.

We're going to need them since Jayden isn't going to have anybody to throw to. LOL

I haven’t really limited anyone’s enthusiasm or said it was a bad move. I’m just not falling over myself.

I like it and think it’s a good move.

And you’re one to talk about limiting enthusiasm 😆

How about Tate at #7 in the draft.

I think that would make us forget about Jennings.

I am high on him, but I understand your point. I saw a poster say it won't be like Bobby Wagner in coverage. Chenal is fast (4.53 at the combine), but I think people are maybe misunderstanding him. He is a bit like a Bobby Wagner in that he is arun stopper first. Fast doesn't mean you can leave him one on one with a RB on a choice route for example. His short area quickness and agility wouldn't hold up. But he is a physical LB who will take on blockers in the hole and who is fine if Guards or Tight Ends climb up to him. He has a punch and can disengage. He is less dependent on the D-Line protecting him. He has that linear side line to sideline speed and his speed can be useful in defending the seam in coverage, but he is very much a run first defender in my mind. Much like Wagner. In 2 out of the last 3 years he has a 90+ PFF run grade and his best ever coverage grade was 72.

If they are gonna drag their feet on Jennings/Okonkwo/White/safeties (Brisker?) can they at least tender CRod to tide us over? Maybe get Jacob Martin resigned?

Those 2 feel like low hangingish fruit. Esp the CRod one.

Yes, because now I can actually look at moves made and evaluate them.

It's hard to evaluate a concept or a promise.

draft (Tate or Love) + a couple middling signings at wide receivers will already be a huge upgrade over no Eckler, Chris Moore, Robbie Chosen, Jacoby Jones, and Tay Martin.

Im trying to play catch up here, did we lose out on Jennings?? I still would hate not getting Love in the draft, dude is that blue chip talent that we haven't had here in ages
