The 2026 Free Agency Thread

I get the instinct — the room feels thin, Jayden is young, and you want to insulate him with as many credible options as possible. But there’s a difference between upgrading the room and over-allocating resources to one position group. Let’s just walk through the math calmly. We’ve got roughly $73M in cap space. If Lattimore is released, that bumps to about $93M. The draft class will eat roughly $13M, so now we’re around $80M. You have to keep at least a $10M in-season cushion for injuries and emergency signings, so realistically you’re operating with about $70M. And that’s to sign roughly 12 players — not counting camp bodies or the six draft picks. If you sign two legitimate WRs — say one at $20M AAV (structured at ~$16M year one) and another at $12M AAV (structured at ~$8M year one) — that’s $24M in Year 1 cap hits. Now you’re down to about $46M for 10 players. And that’s before addressing:
  • A starting guard (or re-signing Chris Paul)
  • Possibly Isaiah Likely
  • A high-end RB if that’s part of the plan
  • 4–5 starting-caliber defensive additions (edge, CB, LB, maybe safety)
  • Depth across OL and DL
That money disappears fast. You can absolutely sign one high-end WR and still be balanced. But signing two quality WRs and using the #7 overall pick on a WR? That’s how you create positional surplus while other units become weak links. You don’t win because you have the best WR room. You win because you don’t have structural holes. The last two Super Bowl Champs the Eagles and Seahawks and very good overall rosters.
Nice post, but I've got some counterpoints.

Extending Tunsil drops his cap hit down considerably. Biadasz is also in the last year of his deal, he can be extended to drop the cap hit as well. So that's a savings of $15-20m from those two. We aren't paying Allegretti $7m in 2026 to be the backup Center anymore, so cutting him saves another $3m or extending/restructuring him also saves roughly $3m. We've got other contracts that can be restructured or extended. If we want to play with Cash Over Cap like the Eagles do, then the Commanders have even more to work with (Luvu, Armstrong, etc).

We have one huge asset that most teams do not have, which is a QB rookie contract window where we can spend an absurd amount of money elsewhere on offense and load up. Having Jayden Daniels get hurt because the offensive roster sucks is how you fail to take advantage of the rookie contract window. Cause in just a few years his cap hit will be $60-70m. So the time to splurge and go all-in has to be right now. That splurge and those contracts will then be off the books or can be re-worked by the time Daniels insane QB cap hits start hitting us.

Our QB, who will throw his body on the line to make a play, can only currently rely on one WR.
  • That one WR is 31 years old.
  • Any WR signed in FA for less than $12m a year will likely suck and lose their starting job mid-season (would have been less than $11m, but cap is rising)
    • Marquise Brown, Curtis Samuel, Dyami Brown, Tutu Atwell, Josh Palmer are recent examples of "affordable" WR additions, but the reality is they still suck and that's a net drain of around $10m a year for just $1m of production
    • If you actually want WR production more equivalent to the Cap Space you are spending, then you have to increase the money to get 2nd tier guys, cause 3rd tier is just a waste of time and money since they do not produce. It's the reality of WR Free Agents
  • If we don't add 2 WR Free Agents, then our WR room is looking really bleak
    • 31 Year Old WR who might hit that wall and his body could start breaking down, you never know when it happens, maybe it won't until he's 32 or 33, but it could be at 31.
    • Both Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane only managed 2 targets a game. Jaylin Lane had a 40% success rate when targeted, his ability to catch deep passes is really raw. He doesn't know how to set up the catch point so the corner can't interfere. They can still both develop. But you can not rely on that.
It's not far fetched at all to imagine Terry's body breaks down a little, Luke and Lane don't develop further, the "affordable" Free Agent we get sucks because they always suck at that price point. Then Jayden Daniels panics because he's got a piss poor receiving room to throw to and his body breaks down again as he desperately tries to make something out of nothing.

How do we realistically combat this?
  • You never know how the draft shakes out, so the WR they make like at #7 might not be there.
  • That leaves the only option of filling in that WR room through Free Agency. As stated above, you have to spend real money on them.
    • $12M is the floor for a WR.
      • Good News...the hit rate on this group is above 0%! The bad news, it's still not a reliable hit rate. Of the 5 WR signed in the $11-13M range in 2025 (now the $12-14M range in 2026), the hit rate was 60%. It's 40% if we think Darius Slayton was a miss.
    • Next tier up is $20m+, hit rate is more reliable here.
  • If we do sign those 2 FA, and the WR we like is there at #7...it can still make some sense to take him. Honestly if we do sign 2 FA, I'd rather go elsewhere than WR at #7, but it still makes some sense given age of WR room, hit/bust rate for the cheaper WR FA tier (but still higher than "affordable" tier which is just a waste of money), and having somebody under contract when Jayden's Cap Hit explodes.
Filling out the WR room lets us not panic in the draft because our specific QB is now less likely to get injured. We can take whatever Blue Chip player we want (Reese, Love, Bailey, etc), or trade back if a sweetheart deal is on the table. Otherwise we have a serious risk factor of injuring Jayden again, and wasting the most key asset of a contenders roster construction which is a premier QB on a rookie contract.

Look at recent examples:
  • The Dolphins had Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle — arguably the best duo in football — and still stalled when the OL and defense weren’t consistent.
  • The Cowboys had CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens — didn’t matter when protection and run defense broke down.
  • The Bengals had Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins — elite room, but the OL and defense limited ceiling.
High-end WR duos don’t override roster imbalance. The league has shown that repeatedly.
Eagles have a high end WR duo too. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith. They won a Super Bowl the same season they gave Smith a $25m a year contract. They were also paying top of the market money for RB, a position most say don't spend on for roster construction purposes. There are contract windows that allow for extra spending. In 2024 when they won, Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith had just signed their contracts. Their cap hits were lower then than they will be in 2026. But it still kept talent around and happy while they won a Super Bowl.

I want a TE upgrade.... but, we can get the same security blanket effect from a power slot type of player. I don't specifically have one in mind, but it's an option.
agreed, just think there are more quality options available at TE as opposed to WR.

In reality, we will likely address both spots.

Apparently they will release him if no takers

You'd have to be real desperate to take on a contract that another team doesn't want when you know he'll be a free agent soon anyway.

I get that you have no guarantee he'll sign with you if hes a free agent but thats where the desperate part comes in, just wait until hes available to sign for what he's now worth or take on some massive cap hit because you may not get him otherwise and as icing on that cake you lose some draft capital as well, albeit probably not much.

Also, and this is one of my unfounded opinions but I hate trading for players who were signed as free agents, one team was already willing to part ways with said player for no compensation and now another team no longer has interest in him and we gotta give up draft capital, no thx.

Jaydens new security blanket does not need to be a single player. While it was Ertz for sure, he also liked Ekeler. We can create a number of security blankets for him with reliable pass catching TE, RB and big slot or other WR's to go with Terry.

I don't see it healthy for the growth of this team even garner thoughts of returning Ertz and Ekeler on one year deals.

Right and you can add Wagner to this list and all for the same reasons- the temptation to rely on them for an oversized role is too strong.

Could Wagner help this team in a significantly reduced role playing run downs? Of course, but he’s not that guy. He’ll make too much money for that role so if you bring him back, you’ve either overpaid or overplayed him and both are bad.

Could Ertz help out on some big 3rd downs and red zone work? Maybe, he’s coming off the ACL and already couldn’t run for years, but sure, probably. Same as Wagner though, you’re either overpaying or overplaying, or just straight up blocking someone from getting a chance. Whether it’s signing Likely or growing Sinnott’s role, somebody is getting clogged.

Yeah, I’m definitely not saying trade for him. We can’t afford to do that. Just wondering how interested people would be if he hits free agency.

With fa wr pool being extremely thin this year, the team might not have too many options and resigning Debo should be back on the table.

It's just super slim pickings at WR and I would hate to overpay for what is essentially a no. 3 WR.

Didn't realize his cap hit would be $18 million. Is the collarbone the only issue? That's something that should not crop up again.

He simply sucked last year. Rated 80/81 by PFF for receivers. He's had 2 WR2 type of seasons and 4 WR3/WR4 type of seasons. He'd be interesting on a 1 year/$10M type of prove it deal but I certainly wouldn't give him a multiyear deal, especially given he is 28

I’m guessing Wagner is back. I didn’t bother to look it up, but I saw a stat that said he is 60 tackles short of topping Ray Lewis for highest tackle total of all time.

I’m not against bringing him back - but I don’t think having him should change our pursuit of upgrades at inside backer in general. If he winds up as depth he winds up as depth.

He may want to go elsewhere if that is the play but, I wouldn’t guarantee him anything.

💰💰💰

Forget 10-12, he’s probably gonna want 15 mill per season.

I still say do it

Keim mentioned Likely on an ESPN segment now. So that's three different mentions from him about him, so am guessing he's heard they are interested. He also mentioned Okonkwo for the first time.

He coud be out off season splurge.

I'd rather pay him bigger money as opposed to the top FA WRs

I have been thinking similarly although it is somewhat begrudgingly. He was both a strength and a weakness last year. I am hoping we can bring in some sure tacklers, if so he would be less needed.

Last year I thought they overplayed him so he could reach 2000 tackles. I don't want to deal with the 60 tackle mark this year
