The 2026 Free Agency Thread

One thing I think we need to remember as fans, is the fact that we're rapidly approaching the need to sign a market setting deal with a QB. Whether you agree or not, it's likely that Jayden resets the market, and this front office is likely going to spend accordingly. I personally think we make some big moves this offseason, but carrying over money from year to year very well may be a strategy to support the contract for our QB in 2 years when it's time to make that statement.

That’s true, but the cap will also keep increasing. There’s an even larger jump expected in that 2028-2029 area due to major media deals again being negotiated, plus the normal inflation of the cap we’ve been seeing. If we’re lucky we’ll “overpay” Jayden Daniels right before those media rights are renegotiated and it’ll instantly look a lot better. But regardless:

I know you already said that you think they spend this offseason, but just to agree and reiterate that point, if they don’t, they may be entering an anti-self-fulfilling prophecy situation where by being so afraid of spending money due to an upcoming QB mega contract, they actually prevent their QB from earning it to the degree that they expected or even create a situation where he doesn’t want to re-sign here at all and things become contentious.

We need to start showing this young QB that we want to do everything in our power to help him succeed, as other franchises are doing for their QB’s, or we’re going to continue to stunt him and piss him off.

Our future cap situation is currently very healthy and we’ve been almost comically conservative with it in recent years, especially given the context: having a young QB carry us to the NFCCG as a rookie. So much so that we actually look foolish and have shot ourselves in the foot.

Any of these guys a former teammate of Blough’s?
I have no idea. It’s possible AI could figure that out but I’m not going to bother.

I think the better question is whether any of them played for Ben Johnson. It feels like a lot of our offense is going to be based on that philosophy, so getting somebody familiar with it would be good.

That said, most of the players on that list are some combination of old and/or bad.

Maybe, but keep in mind he, Caleb, Maye and Nix are all going to be eligible at the same time. Right now it’s a bit of a debate who should get the biggest contract.

Daniels was # after 2024. Who’s #1 now after he missed most of the year with injury? Tough to say.

That’s going to be really interesting to see which QB signs their deal first. I imagine all will want to be last.

Based on his two seasons, Peters doesn't like to spend in free agency. His preference is to patch. He doesn't mind spending big bucks on players he's traded for (accepting large contracts) and I think he wants to spend on the draft. Unfortunately, the trades have eaten away his ability to draft which has hampered his patch strategy. So which bin does he look in this year when it comes to free agency? Given that year three is generally thought of as an important year, you'd hope he exits the thrift shop and starts going to places where he can buy the new, top of the line stuff a bit more often.

But I really won't be surprised if he mostly returns to rummaging through the bargain bins for those one-year, cheap reclamation projects or the "I think I can get one more good year of wear out of this thing" discard piles.

I think that's a fair description... Peters has said a number of times that he views the draft as the core means to build a roster, and free agency as a way to 'supplement' it. I think he self-sabotaged and set that philosophy aside after the 2024 season, getting seduced by the idea that Washington got within 1 win from a Super Bowl appearance. He gave away draft capital to try and fill some obvious short-term holes instead of using it for longer term needs.

If we part ways with Deebo after just one season after giving up a 5th rounder to obtain him, that's a big fail. Lattimore has been a big fail. The only super solid FA move Peters has made was acquiring Tunsil. Yes - we gave up a lot to get him, but it's extremely rare to have an opportunity to bring in a top 5 NFL left tackle who still has gas in the tank, so that move can be justified (especially when his most important job is protecting your young franchise QB's blind side). If they mess up and can't re-sign Tunsil to a long-term contract, that will be the biggest fail of all.

Peters needs to get back to his supposed core philosophy in 2026. Treat draft picks like the gold they are. And I also think you are right that he needs to re-think his mindset on free agency and that it would be better to spend big money on a couple of real difference makers vs. nickel and dime bargain basement shopping as we have mostly seen so far.

I am going for a slight trade down in the draft to recoup some picks. I'd also look for him to drop back with one of the later picks to gain a couple extra later round picks giving him the opportunity to fill the backside of our roster with more talent, athleticism, potential and cap friendly contracts.

I think he will go hard after a couple fairly highly ranked FA's and sprinkle in a few of the middling players. I am going to see more 2-3 year contracts moving away from the one year deals.

Regarding that middling ground it will be interesting to see if aims to appease JD with team favorable contracts with Aiyuk and R White

I agree with this approach.

I think the consensus is that this draft is not really top heavy, the best players play non-premium positions.

So why not trade down and recoup picks.

What are the moves that you would make in free agency to make drafting Love possible?

I think drafting Love at 7 is possible regardless of FA. I'm not sure you have to do much of anything to get to that ground work other than making sure Tunsil is re-signed. I think Love is the single biggest addition to the roster that can help Jayden Daniels. Though, let me take a step back... it doesn't necessarily have to be Love. Adding a dynamic, playmaking running back with vision that can create to some level (doesn't need to be elite) is probably the biggest factor. I think Love is the best RB available this offseason - but Hall, Etienne & Walker aren't far behind. And then a tier below that are guys like White - but adding White wouldn't necessarily stop me from drafting Love. Guys from that first grouping probably do.

I know it's unpopular, but offensively I think running back is by far our biggest need. Many think what we have is "good enough" - I do not. This is where we need the largest upgrade.

Possession pass catcher is second... First order of business is bringing Burks back. Then, whether it be a tight end (Njoku?) or a receiver in the early rounds (Tate is probably the safest bet for us), or mid rounds of the draft (Sarratt in rd 3, though I don't think he makes it there... reminds me of Garcon) or FA (Aiyuk, Jennings, Doubs).

I think another big play receiver is probably next (Pierce).

Aside from that, a lot of the focus comes to the Tunsil situation. He is the first domino that sets this offseason. Once he is re-signed, everything else can go according to plan. If we don't get him re-signed, that sets all of this back a peg and OT becomes a major concern for our offseason, imo. I am not confident Coleman can step in at L/RT full time yet - though I am pleased with his development. I think he is still best served in his current role, swing guy.

So I guess, to answer your question: The only move that I think is 100% needed to draft Love is re-signing Tunsil.

We obviously need talent on defense, and right now the five guys I like most are: Bain, Styles, Downs, Reese, Delane. Wouldn't be shocked to see us go that route... and I wouldn't necessarily be against it. But I think Bain, Love, Delane and Downs are four of the best players in this draft, regardless of position.

Adding any of them is a win.

So, what do I do in FA for defense? Everything I can. I don't view it as a pre-req for drafting Love, but I do view it as a necessity to be competitive.

Add at least one inside backer (Daronte seems to be high on McGee, Medrano potential). But I think they may roll with Luvu + one of the other guys and forego LB (which makes me nervous).

We have to add at minimum one safety. Though Daronte seems to like Quan Martin based on interviews.

We have to shore up the DL - that is code red priority one for the defense.

I DO think the secondary can improve with a better pass rush. To what extent? Not sure, but more pressure probably means better coverage. I'm more concerned with our front end than back end defensively, but safety is a pretty large concern for me.

I don't know how we can say RB is the biggest priority when we do not have anyone on this roster who is considered a starting caliber WR other than Terry McLaurin. I don't disagree that having a difference-making RB would be helpful, but what good is having a scary good RB that teams have to respect if when Jayden does throw the ball, he has no one other than Terry to throw the ball to?

Help me understand the logic there.

I would argue (see the poll I just posted) that there is no greater need this team has than a dynamic, top tier WR to play opposite McLaurin. There is no other single move imho that would have a bigger positive effect on Jayden Daniels effectiveness than an electric WR he trusts.

Our problem isn't that we lack a stud beside Terry (though that would be a nice addition, I can't argue that) it's that we don't have much of anything at receiver beyond Terry. At least in my opinion.

After Deebo and Terry, our best wide receivers were: Jaylin Lane, Chris Moore.

The problem with our receiver group, in my opinion, isn't necessarily that we are lacking top end talent. It's that we are lacking talent. Period.

Let's go down the top end talent road: Who is the addition that would be a top end addition to the group? A true stud receiver? I'd argue that in this draft/FA class there really isn't one.

Does forcing a pick for a guy like Carnell Tate help us more than adding Love? I don't think so. Some may. I don't.

Where I think we can make serious strides at receiver is in two places:

1) adding guys who are reliable targets and increasing overall quality in the receiver room. You don't need big names for that.

-Adding Njoku (or various other FA TEs), getting Burks back, looking into Rashid Shaheed, adding Aiyuk or Jauan Jennings are all viable options that make our passing game immediately better. Heck, looking into Deebo is still an option. But a receiver room of Terry, Deebo, Aiyuk, Burks is far better than a receiver room of Deebo, Lane, McCaffrey, Moore. Look at the difference in our receivers with a healthy Terry + OZ, Brown and Brown. That room isn't a good room, and the first grouping I named above is leagues better. I don't argue that we don't need to upgrade receiver, but I don't believe there are any receivers that can make an impact on our offense singlehandedly like Love or Hall could.

2) Using motion and moving Terry around. Your best receiver needs to be a decoy, needs to be moved and needs to have various ways to get the ball. Schematic changes in that regard can help us get the ball in Terry's hands (he also needs to be available).

I also think, if things go awry this year, next year we can get an absolute game changer at wide receiver in the draft. I don't think we should be adding a guy at wide receiver with a high end draft pick just to add one when better players are present. And FA, I'm not sure there is a receiver available that will move that needle outside of Pickens - and I'm not sure he's a route I want to go.

So, in closing:

I don't disagree that receiver group is a needed upgrade spot. And, if we can't get Hall or Love, etc., I think my offensive need code reds shift because there aren't many other guys WORTH upgrading with at RB.

I view Hall/Love as better players than what is available at WR for the most part. So I view RB as code red as it aligns with what is out there.

If Jeremiah Smith were in this draft class, and we were picking a touch higher, my must draft guy would be him. No questions asked. But he isn't there.

Great response - thank you KDawg. And certainly, if they embrace (or at least lean heavily on) a BPA philosophy, the 'who is available' aspect is a huge factor in how you prioritize.

Maybe, but I think your timeline is off a bit.

The absolute worst move, by far, is the Lattimore trade, and that happened in-season in 2024. Because the secondary was garbage and he was trying to do something to put them over the edge while they were on a hot streak. I didn't have a problem taking the swing at the time, don't have a problem with it now. You have to be aggressive. The problem is, it didn't work. Sometimes you swing and you strike out. But if you don't swing, you can't hit a home run. He swung, he missed. Took the walk back to the dugout with his bat in his hand and his head down. It's unfortunate, but it happens. Importantly though, this move happened in-season.

You'll never hear me complain about trading for a top-5 LT. It cost us essentially 4 mid-round draft picks over 2 years to get a top 5 tackle. I'd sign up to do that every day of the week and twice on Sundays. You can't sign those guys in FA, and even drafting one high, the hit rate isn't 100%. You have to draft them and also get lucky. It doesn't matter to me what the philosophy is, if you can get a Tunsil or a Trent Williams in their prime without giving up a 1st round pick, you do it. (You agree with this.)

And I can't complain about the 5th for Deebo. If you do a quick scan through 5th round picks, you're not going to find a lot of them who actually out-performed Deebo. Most 5th round picks are ST players and out of the league in 2-3 years. They got a legitimate starting caliber player at WR, who was very good for them, and for long stretches of the season, the only starting caliber WR on the roster because of Terry and Noah Brown's injuries. A 5th for a 1 year rental for a starting WR? Eh. I'm not going to complain about that much.

If we part ways with Deebo after just one season after giving up a 5th rounder to obtain him, that's a big fail. Lattimore has been a big fail. If they mess up and can't re-sign Tunsil to a long-term contract, that will be the biggest fail of all.
I actually disagree about Deebo. If they spent a 5th and got 1 good year of production, and then didn't want to spend a lot of money in FA and somebody signs him to a 2-3 year $20m AAV contract and they let him walk, that's fine with me. I know I have a lower value on 5th - 7th round picks than most, but the numbers say, if you get 1 good season out of a 5th round pick, you're doing really well.

Lattimore has been a complete and total swing and a miss, as I said above.

They HAVE to extend Tunsil. I expect they will. There could be a theory (and not a good one) that they could let him play out this year and then franchise tag him twice, and that's 4 years of total control. I REALLY hope they don't go down that route. There's no reason to piss off one of the top 5 LTs in the league. I have a lot of faith this is going to get done. Not sure when, but unlike Terry, who was asking for top 5 money when he's not a top 5 player, Tunsil is going to be asking for top 1 money and he is a top 5 player, and on any given day, maybe the best LT in football. And unlike Terry, Tunsil has more leverage because of how good he is and the draft capital we used to get him.

I don't think he really can get back to anything in 2026. Because we have only 5 draft picks. I still keep screaming the team should trade Coleman for a 2nd or 3rd. He's a potential better than replacement level player at LT, there is a market for that. I get that it's punting on a 2024 draft pick, but now that you have Tunsil and Connerly, there isn't a tackle position for him to occupy, and he's clearly better at tackle than guard. Re-sign Wylie as the swing tackle for no money, pick up a mid-round draft pick. I doubt they do it, but they really should. UNLESS they think Coleman can actually start at guard. But he couldn't last year and Paul beat him out and played really well. They should re-sign Paul and keep the continuity and trade Coleman. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
The biggest problem for Peters hasn't been FA or philosophy. It's been he that he hasn't hit on enough of the draft picks he has had.
2024:
Rnd 1: Daniels - Hit
Rnd 2: Newton - Miss - Backup average rotational player. Newton was also a HIGH second round pick, almost a 1st. Need more production from that draft position.
Rnd 2: Sainristil - Incomplete - I think he's good, he has played well at times, I think he's been used out of position which is not his fault. Let's see if he gets better coaching and improves.
Rnd 2: Ben Sinnott - Miss
Rnd 3: Coleman - Miss - Relegated to backup
Rnd 3: McCaffery - Miss - At best replacement level
Rnd 5: Jordan Magee - Jury's out but hasn't gotten on the field
Rnd 5: Dominique Hampton - On the Bears
Rnd 7: Jean-Baptiste - Very good backup. (I'd consider this a hit for a 7th round pick, he got hurt last year, but he was a good rotational DE.)

I don't judge 5th - 7th rounders because the hit rate is like 5% of them becoming a starter.

But for rounds 1-4, 6 picks, 1 hit (Daniels), 1 incomplete and 4 misses. That's not great.

2025:
Rnd 1: Connerly - Hit
Rnd 2: Trey Amos - Hit (until he got injured)
Rnd 4: Lane - Hit as a punt returner
Rnd 6: Medrano - He rarely played
Rnd 7: Bill Croskey-Merritt - If he develops into a consistent starter, he would be the best find of both drafts.

So the 2025 draft, even with limited picks, looks more promising than the 2024 draft.

In order for the "build through the draft, horde draft picks, supplement with FA" philosophy to work, you have to hit on draft picks. 2025 seems like it's heading in the right directly.

2024? Eh. It's nowhere near as bad as the draft we do not mention with the player we do not name (think hair grooming product) where we spent 3 second round picks on mostly busts (Fred Davis was ok), but it's not looking great except for Daniels.

IF Sainristil rebounds in year 3, that would go a long way to redeeming the draft class. Also, there is a non-zero chance both Newton and Sinnott improve with different coaching. Sinnott might have just not been a scheme fit with Kliff. Newton might not have been a scheme fit with whatever Whitt was trying to do, though I'm not sure what he was trying to do.

This is a BIG year for the 2024 draft class.

I am going for a slight trade down in the draft to recoup some picks. I'd also look for him to drop back with one of the later picks to gain a couple extra later round picks giving him the opportunity to fill the backside of our roster with more talent, athleticism, potential and cap friendly contracts.

I don't want to trade down. I want to stick and pick the best player which could turn into a blue chip player.

Statistics show the hit rate to turn into blue chip players diminish with every pick. I get that we need quantity. But we also need quality.

Go grab the best player you can grab. I honestly don't care about the position.

To pull this back to FA (which is what this thread is about), they need to be active in FA to allow this to happen. they can't go into FA knowing they have a hole at safety (for example) and therefor having to clench their butt cheeks hoping Downs drops to them, or something like that.

They need to go out and be more aggressive in FA, fill with at least better than replacement level players holes at TE, WR, CB, DE and Safety. That means spending a little bit of money.

Then they can draft BPA. But if they just get average or below average depth guys, they don't have enough picks to be able to add quality prospects.

KDawg, great post.

1. You are 100% right about our WR room. We have Terry, who is going to be 31, and literally nothing else after him. We CUT Chris Moore in the cutdown to 53, then re-signed him because we needed WRs, and he ended up as a starter (due to injuries) for much of the season. That's a bad spot to be in

McCaffery can't be counted on. He's probably competing for a roster spot, though competing with who is very much a question.

The big question is Deebo, do they bring him back or not? If they do, then they still need a legitimate starting outside WR because Deebo is more of a "move around" guy than an outside guy.

2. TE is a wasteland, Ertz will not be back, and even if they somehow want him to come back, he's slower than a 3 toed sloth at this point, they need more athletic ability at TE. Could they get more from Sinnott because maybe he wasn't a scheme fit for Kliff? Maybe. But I'm not going to bank on that.

3. RB, I think of the three skill positions, the one which is most competent (absent Terry), is RB. But that doesn't mean good enough. It means you can put a guy out there who can play. But we don't have a guy who scares anybody.

The way I look at it, I think you have to look at all the skill positions as a group. The absolute must gets in order to line up with 11 players on opening day spots are WR2 and TE1 which are not on the roster.

However, to your point, if you sign a top-end RB, that takes some pressure off the WRs and TEs.

I think of the group as a hole needing 3 top-end talents. McLaurin (assuming availability and not regressing due to age) is one of them. We don't have the other 2 at any position. We have some capable "fill in guys" like CRod and Bill, maybe Deebo if we re-sign him. Nobody at TE.

The way I'm thinking about it is:
1. They absolutely need a starting TE. That's priority 1. Safety blanket for the QB, Daniels had a lot of trust in Ertz, who made a lot of clutch catches. They have to replace that no matter what in some way, and do it at the TE position. That doesn't mean they need the best TE on the market. It just means they don't have a starting caliber pass-catching TE on the roster and they have to have one to replace Ertz's production. Whether that's a top-end weapon or a "fill in guy" doesn't matter, it's the biggest hole on offense because there isn't a guy on the roster who can fill it at all. And I don't think you can do this by upgrading at WR/RB. The TE position is unique.
2. They need to find 2 additional top end-weapons at any skill position. Doesn't really matter the combination. 1 RB + 1 WR, 2 WRs, 1 WR + 1 TE, 2 TEs, whatever. (I don't think 2 RBs would work, but other than that, any combination.) But they need 2 more dynamic weapons + Terry. Then they have "fill in guys" for the other spots. 3 weapons that scare people at skill positions, Daniels as a dual threat (assuming they let him be a dual threat), plus a bunch of better than replacement guys, and you're cooking with gas.

I have no problem if they choose to go with Love/Hall as one of those, and then get a high-end WR or TE as the second. I also don't mind if they got Pickens and Pitts (WR + TE). ** I'm using these as examples.

They just need to have 3 top-end weapons total, and then fill in with other guys at other positions. Also, I wouldn't consider Deebo as a top-end weapon. He'd be a "guy you fill in with."

Right now they have 1 top-end talent guy, 2 "fill in guys" (Bill and CRod), and literally nothing else on the roster.

This is why I think they're going to be aggressive in FA.

This is going to piss some people here off…

The Steelers will need to trade either Highsmith or Herbig this offseason. The latter has emerged as a star and is stuck behind Watt and Highsmith so either he needs to be traded (and extended) or Highsmith does as Watt is untradeable due to cap hit. Highsmith is a havoc wreaker himself but he’s missed some games the past two years.

Both guys are infinitely more appealing than Jaelan Phillips and the other free agent EDGE guys (sans Hendrickson). Both guys would pair really well with Armstrong here.

Would you trade for either one?

I think this point needs to be maintained through any decision made and how we judge the outcomes. It's easy to say something should have been differently... it's a lot more nuanced if we take time to look at what the other options actually were. There's been a lot of criticism without a true answer to the question of 'what would you have done differently' and if there was even a better option.

If we had a full complement of picks - maybe.

Since we don’t- no.

If Luke McCaffrey and Ben Sinnott are not competing for roster spots, that will tell me everything I need to know about the roster.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that they think Sinnott will benefit from the scheme change. However, when asked about Sinnott, Blough said that Sinnott has, “a long way to go”. I could easily see Sinnott as a camp cut.

I really think we need 2 TE’s. Let’s say we sign Likely, who is going on if Likely is hurt. We will have zero otherTE’s that can run a route at that point.

I think Luke was starting to look pretty solid before his clavicle fracture, but he’s essentially a big slot.

We are kind of in the same position at Z receiver. Although I guess Burks could be a backup on the outside.
