That #2 is so telling.

He dumped Slye and got McManus, with a widely reported connection between McManus and the ST Coach. Then we dumped McManus with the legal issues and the carousel began.

This kind of thing has happened where we have seen us pick up players with connections to coaches. It's interesting. I imagine a lot of these guys as "spreadsheet" kinds of people, literal and figurative. It sounds like, at least in my opinion, he may want to adjust his weighting on this factor.

Agree, its why I mentioned it. So for example whatever D coordinator they hire we should follow the trail to who played for them, etc.

That #2 is so fascinating! If it's a strongly held belief, it means you are really limited on the "big FA signings" that he would do.

Also, if some of that weighting extends to drafts (especially if you consider "a high draft pick" - a huge investment of value, similar to a "big FA deal") it would fit into what Conn and I have been suggesting - Peters doesn't go his own way enough sometimes and trust his own evals. He may ask the coordinators their opinions, potentially too much.
 


Should the Commanders sign Rachaad White?​

This is honestly a no-brainer to me. White would be the perfect Austin Ekeler replacement, and fill his exact role as a RB1 who could split carries with Bill Croskey-Merrit, while being a pass protector and a huge part of the passing game as well. White is very underrated still, and would thrive back in a RB1 role after splitting time with Bucky Irving.

The Commanders had success running the ball this year, but the current running back room isn’t reliable off the ball at all, and that’s why the offense needs to add a do-it-all back to start. White would be a lot more cost-friendly compared to other RB targets in free agency, such as Kenneth Walker III and Breece Hall, who could demand $10+ million per year. The Commanders have a lot of needs to address, and a true RB1 is on that list as well.

I mean…that just becomes less and less possible the longer a staff stays in place. I guess hopefully they hire a DC who has some good former players hitting FA? You have to project at some point. That’s what the pro personnel department is for. He needs to get more comfortable adding talent to the roster this way or we’re dead in the water.
 
An NFL staff should be UBER familiar with every potential *big* free agent signee. I really don't understand why personal experience with a player should ever be a prerequisite for improving your team?

For God's sake, you may not personally know the player, but you have access to all the tape in the world and you more than likely have peers you know on every NFL team who can give honest feedback on who the guy is.

His answer left me scratching my head. I was thinking to myself why do you have scouts than? He clearly feels like he got burned on long term FA deals in the past. But you still have to take swings. Especially while we have JD on a rookie deal. 5 year FA deals right now that have easy outs in year 4 would be fine.
 
Will we re-sign Trayvon Burks before FA period begins?
 
The way I took Peters comment wasn't so literally. I took it about giving big contracts, the big swings. He seemed to be saying his FA misses with other teams were giving big money to players that no one in the building had a history with. In other words, sort of the signings that Dan was known for, lets take a swing at Albert Haynesworth, Dana Stubblefield, etc and yeah we don't know if they are good in the locker room or will lose their motivation once they get their money but who cares lets let it ride. Sounds like Peters has gone on that ride from time to time and its burned him.

And as clskinsfan reminded me, he talked about past injuries as being something they might look out for players they take -- so I'd factor that.

But yeah as to the bigger swings, makes sense to me to suggest he'd prefer (he didn't say it must be) to have someone in the building to vouch for the dude. There are a lot of assistant coaches, FO people, its not just Peters with SF and Quinn with Dallas, the net is wider than that in the building.

Blank is a lot like Woody Johnson. He doesn't always meddle but he does often enough to ensure the team doesn't get anywhere.

Truly weird stuff there. They created this new prez of football ops position (that's who the new GM will report to). This afternoon, though, they requested interviews with K. Kubiak and the Dolphins DC, Weaver. Who the hell is gonna conduct the interviews? And when the candidates ask who the ultimate decision-maker will be, how will ATL answer? I guess they're gonna hire the new prez and GM in the next 72 hours. Thorough work.
