The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

JDs year, last year and this year (which has yet to happen but this conversation is revolving around them going defense at 7).

That’s three.

Agree on the rest.
2024 + 2025 = 2 years. This years draft has yet to be completed but whatever. It's all good.

Yes… but the discussion is centered around going defense at 7… which I noted.

With word that NO likes/loves Tate, the Jets love him and could trade up for him (perhaps with us as we’re lacking draft capital), and ARI/CLE want to trade back… I can see our FO not wanting to advertise us (potentially) being in on Tate.

And a question. If the feeling is that 1) we have to prioritize giving Daniels help, 2) receiver at 71 is a crapshoot (both in terms of a 3rd rounder being the solution, and the risk that guys that could possibly make an immediate impact are gone), and 3) there’s no guarantee we land one of the top remaining FA receivers, then why wouldn’t we turn to Lemon/Cooper/etc if Tate were not available?

Personally, I think I’m all in on Tate. However, if I’m trying to set that bias aside, I see some other potential routes we could go.
Stick and pick defense at 7. If receivers are flying off the board before 71, we could trade up. Would hate to give up picks, but perhaps a pick swap, including (if need be) 2027 picks.

Stick and pick Lemon (or whoever). Not ideal, especially if they’re taking a lesser prospect, but at least we’d be adding a quality receiver.

Trade back. Let’s say for the Jets’ 16th and 44th. Could go receiver at 16 or take another position and then receiver at 44.
Could also potentially trade back from 44 (or 16), still land a quality receiver, and then have more maneuverability to address corner, center, safety or whatever. Could also double down on receiver in this scenario.

Just a theory.

A. Combining Charlie Campbell and Keim's take that people are mixed in the building about Tate

B. Yet, according to Campbell they might take Tate anyway after previously saying they aren't high on him

C. Keim thinking they prefer Delane but not ruling out Tate or Downs even though he said he heard mixed takes in the building among his sources

What i am wondering is does Jayden weigh in and they might care about it. I know some would say that's dysfunctional, etc. But it doesn't have to be some demand or him pouting but simply going to Peters dude please take care of me, I am working my ass off, I am here at 5:30am for for workouts. Just give me a weapon or two and watch me go.

Jayden isn't just any player -- this team rides or falls with him. It's not dysfuctional to take care of him. That's my long winded way of saying I am starting to feel like its a possibility tonight as to Tate. People might think, I and KDawg and Conn among others here are coming on too strong. But if you read some of the reasons why Tate is hot in mock drafts to this team it centers on how can this team not do it -- do you see their WRs? And can you really count on Aiyuk and or another mid round WR to address this?

I woke up this morning and said (to myself)

“self… today is the day we draft Carnell Tate. The defensive mandate is a lie to throw everyone off our scent. It’s going to be a good day”

And that is my stance. We are drafting Tate. And/or trading Payne for BTJ. That one I haven’t convinced myself of yet. But Tate? Yup. It’s happening.

Sure is.

No doubt.

Right?

Guys?
FWIW, I somewhat think the same, but not because of what anybody has reported, one way or the other, but because it just makes too much sense not to.

Assuming Tate is there.

To make KDawg happy. The seventh pick and Daron Payne to Arizona for Jeremiah Love.

Don't know if Arizona would take it, but it'd sure shake up the draft.
THere's NO WAY they take that trade.

The 7th, Payne and 71, maybe...

No. You can’t play. I’ve decided what’s happening. No playing. Zero. Nada. We’re drafting Tate because I woke up believing we would.

Why would you do this to me? I woke up on a great mood.

Shame.

It feels too good to be true. So am not counting on it. But if it happens, i'd be as giddy as I was when they took Daniel Jones. And like Jones, I don't think Tyson will be a bust but to me its a reach.

Yeah, but we couldn't do that. For us, this year, that would almost be a Mike Ditka trade away your whole draft for a running back deal.

I know money isn't everything... but the rookie wage scale for pick #3 is gonna be 4x50M

Love is gonna be good, but that isn't an efficient use of the "cheap" years of his contract. That's already top of the market for RB.
Exactly. I think the Cardinals want to trade down badly and they are likely putting out some smoke about their interest in Love. How could they take Love at 3, pay him as a top RB with all that guaranteed money right after paying Allgeier all while having Conner and Benson. Doesn't make sense to me. If they don't trade down they will take whichever Edge the Jets dont take.

Love makes a lot of sense at 4 or possibly to the Giants but they have Skat. I think Love goes at 4 (unless there is a trade) or falls to us.

This is the first year I remember people talking so much about monetary value. Teams rarely spend to the cap and rarely let high end free agents go. I don’t care if we pay a running back, for instance, 20 million if we are still well over the cap.

To me it’s more about maximizing resources. How hard will it be to find a player of similar impact at a different position. For instance, it’s a struggle to find top edge players or OT’s and if you don’t take them high when you can, you might be out of luck.

WR’s don’t come available as free agents that often, but you can draft them later in the first or in the later rounds and still find good ones. Same with CB’s. In the 7 on 7 era, there are just a lot more of those smaller speedy guys that are also skilled.

Agreed, its a no brainer IMO.

However, if Tate is gone, things could get interesting.

Trouble is our efforts to get a WR in Round 3 (McCaffrey) and 4 (Lane) so far haven't produced players that are real contributors on offense barely enough projected starters.

Peters would not have gone after Pierce or Doubs that hard if either of these players was like McLaurin who came in as a #3 round pick and just looked like a starter from the get go.

McVay can find a Puka Nakua in Round 5 but I would not use that as the measuring stick for where we can go to find a capable performer.

That would be a god send.

NYG takes an injury prone player and allows a higher ranked player to fall down the board.

I wonder how much say Jayden gets in these decisions and whether that is a good thing.

He is friends with Aiyuk, which is why we’re expected to get him. Likewise I think we brought Dyami back because of how they clicked in late 2024. I believe similar considerations applied with guys like Ertz and Hartman. Will we draft Tate for the same reason?

On the other hand, his relationship with KK didn’t stop us firing him, so who knows?

I’m not sure what to make of this, on one hand you do want Jayden happy and having good rapport with his receivers, but on the other you don’t want the inmates running the asylum.

There's NO WAY I offer that trade.

I have no problems taking Love at 7 but no way am I trading up for an RB. As much as I want Love, I'm not trading up from 7 for him. That is too much draft capital for an RB.

No disagreement. I wouldn't do that. I would do 7 + Payne. I wouldn't do anything else.
