I don't get into all the media types that talk about how many #1 picks Washington made out on when drafting at #18 but all the busts we have had when drafting in the 20's
That's just to draw eyeballs.
I saw one article that I bypassed that talked about the Washington wide receiver curse from the 2008 draft.
Who cares? Different owner, different GM, different Head Coach.
That was a fan of the team commenting. Agree new regime, Peters hasnt broken that run yet and added to the narrative by trading down versus taking Cooper Dejean. But its only been 2 years

I always used to say that he would have been dominant in Indy with Peyton instead of playing with the jets and skins QBs and systems. We might would draft him 1st at WR this year.

I am betting a decent amount of money by my standards on the Commanders over 7.5 wins. I bet a relatively smaller number on them making the playoffs at +240. Over the years I have made money on betting my teams over/unders (Commanders and Terps). I only really bet overunder season win totals. I learned years ago I don't make money betting spread or point totals week to week. Just don't have a great feel for that. When it comes to win totals I almost always bet the over on my teams or don't bet. I think betting the under on the Terps 2024 season was one of the few times I remember better the under. But the key for me is in years I don't feel good I either don't bet (last year I didn't bet the Terps) or I bet relatively small (I think I bet $200 last year on the Commanders over), whereas in both 2024 and this year I bet like 5X that. I definitely don't think the outside media and Vegas is fully factoring in how much injuries derailed last year, but only time will tell.

You'd be lucky to get a 3rd from KC. It's only 2 spots. The others might offer more. The Rams like to throw around draft picks so who knows. They might give up multiple picks if they really want to move up to 7.
And although the story isn't complete yet theres still a chance connerly Jr could be an example of it too.
Simmons was widely considered the better prospect at the time and although connerly progressed nicely and theres every reason to believe he'll be a solid player for us he struggled at the start and Simmons was the best rookie tackle in the nfl last year and looked like an all pro before he got hurt.
Maybe. I like Conerly, I'd be a bit surprised if he ends up elite.
Then it sounds like you're of my opinion that both sanristil and connerly were mistakes and not in hindsight because at the time there were better prospects available and both those prospects turned out better.
As I said though, the book on Simmons and connerly isn't quite complete but strictly speaking from a performance standpoint their rookies years weren't close, Simmons performed much better when on the field.
Sainristil definitely so. Cooper Dejean -- better player than Sainristil, better size, better athlete and high intangibles.
I don't think it was a mistake to take Conerly over Simmons.

Simmons, a refined pass protector, great footwork, with character/work ethic issues and durability issues.
I'd go with Conerly easily over Simmons. I am not dismissing both character and durability concerns which both manifested in year 1. Ditto the idea that he's not into run blocking.

That's how this year looked going into last season. After last season, this schedule does not look easy anymore. We play the afc south who had 2 playoff teams and would have been 3 if Daniel Jones didn't get hurt. We also play the nfc west who was the best division in football. We play cincy who is due to be good again, the Vikings with Kyler Murray and the Falcons with Tua.

Yeah I don't know how that is going to be an easy schedule. I'd guess Giants- Cowboys is 2-3 possible wins. Az, Tennessee. We probably win 1 of the Cinci-Minn games so 5-6 so far. Then the rest of the schedule is pretty ridiculous. Jax probably comes back down. 49ers need all new receivers and lost Salah again so hopefully their defense sucks for any reason. Stroud is known to blow some games. We might steal one from Philly or another team but I have a hard time seeing more than 7-8 wins unless JD blows up again in a new offense.
The defense has to be better though but will the offense be scoring more points too?

Their PFF grades were pretty similar. 62.7 for Simmons and 59.9 for Conerly. Simmons was much better in pass pro 75.5 to 57.8 but Conerly was better in run blocking 63.4 vs 48.1. Conerly played in almost twice as many snaps 1054 vs. 526 for Simmons. Simmons injury issues and off field issues caused him to miss like 50% of his team snaps including an alleged 5 game unexcused absence. In pass pro Simmons is definitely better but I am not convinced Simmons was much better on the field given his run blocking and him missed half the season.

“Dominant” is a high bar to clear, and Trent Williams is a Hall of Fame talent, but Ryan Kerrigan and Brandon Scherff had 9 Pro Bowl seasons between the two of them, so we have had a couple first round picks since Trent who were very good for a long time. Though even those are exceptions that prove the rule about how we tend to draft busts and disappointments in the first round, so the point still stands.
I’m sure we all recall mortgaging the future for one good year of RG3, can’t-miss prospects like Chase Young missing, the debacle of picking Forbes over Gonzalez, etc. It’s a wonder so many of us still haven’t learned how much of a crap shoot the draft is, but hopefully we get it right this time.
