The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

It's a ploy.

Was watching Grant and Danny on youtube talk about the Field Yates mock and was kinda the worst case scenario if you wanted defense, all the big names went 2-5 then Tate at 6 and we took Love at 7.

Danny was saying he'd prefer to pick Love as a choice not be forced into it but I'm kinda the opposite. I'd kinda prefer to he forced into picking Love bc he's so definitively the BPA, versus choosing him over someone of equal skill. Because he is not winning out over Reese/Bailey. Styles/Downs, they are similarly "low value" positions, but even there, its so easy these days to cobble together a B+ or A level rushing attack from late round picks and free agents that I would be hard pressed to pick RB over ILB or safety, especially when you consider how poorly our defense has performed over the last few years.

Only player I would say Love stands above far enough to win over outright is probably Tate, but I am more optimistic on Tate than some. He's got Low #1/high #2 potential.

So I've prefer to be pushed into a Love vs. Bain or Love vs. Mansoor debate than Love vs any of those 5, because I think Love loses that debate.

Sheehan is big on pushing Tate > Love if that is a choice. At a minimum I don't think its a no brainer purely because of the rising costs of WRs and hoiw so few now hit the market.

Tate both addresses the team's biggest weakness IMO and hits a premium position. But...

IMO Love is elite and Tate isn't (though I think Tate is very good). But the larger point for me is Love helps the passing game. I think he's biggest super power is his play as a receiver.

They met with Tate at the combine and Blough as at today's proday so clearly this team has some interest in Tate.

I was thinking that it wouldn’t be crazy if Love produced 1/2 or 2/3 of the receiving yards that Tate does over his career.

He might.

I've been listening to Love's critics, like Sheehan, some here too who don't think he's in that Barkley, Bijan class as a runner. I actually agree with that, he isn't IMO. But he's a better pass catcher than both of them.

I think what’s going totally overlooked is some of the guys in our pick range are probably going to outright bust or at least seriously disappoint. I’m listening to Grant and Danny right now and they’re saying, I like them all and we’re debating between super models. We’ll throw a party no matter who we end up with.

Which I’m sorry, that’s not how things typically play out AND this is widely considered a weak draft. I feel like there are active landmines just waiting to blow up in the top 10. In our range. And I read this thread everyday and it’s mostly the same. The only guy I see take consistent flak is Tyson for being injured and Bain for being a T-Rex, and there’s always a ton of pushback on Bain.

Don’t you guys think some of them are going to bust?

Beware the positional value mob, Dah-Dee

I think it would be pretty nuts to be 100 certain that all 10 players taken in the top 10 of this years draft are going to live up to their draft position. It's hard in the NFL and there are so many factors can effect whether or not they perform to what should be an elite level with that draft investment.

I think Bain is going to be a bust personally. Tate won’t be a bust but my argument on him is that he isn’t worthy of the 7th overall pick. I think he will be a very good if not great WR2. But yall know that already. I like Bailey but there’s something off about him and I have nothing to back up that argument. Styles is the biggest boom/bust potential. If he hits, he is going to be a defensive MVP candidate throughout his career.

In my opinion I think Downs and Love are the most sure things.

What's the bust downside to Styles?

I mean, I think both things are true: there should be a good choice for us at 7, and some of these guys are going to bust; therefore we could pick one who busts.

This is a classic process versus results scenario, where we will be afforded an opportunity for good process. But the guy could still bust even if it was a sound decision.

So a combine meeting and a pro day visit -- that guarantees he's one of the hotter candidates for them. So far its Tate and Delane that has both the combine and a team visit I'd bet though Styles, Love, Downs will also get that team visit invite, too.

But yeah while this team doesn't leak-talk. Any player with both of these visits have been hot with them on draft day -- the kicker is the Top Golf invite.

In fairness there has also been health concerns brought up with Downs and we have avoided talking QBs and OL for the most part. Some of those guys are highly sought after but have dings.

Sometimes it is unforeseen injuries that cause a bust label which can occur with anyone. Also just playing in the wrong system for a player or not the right coaching. Any ways they could all bust but at least Ron isn't our main evaluator

This is a Cowboys podcaster, national writer I follow, I am not posting this from the Washington point of view -- but I do think Tate has a good shot going before 7 which I think increases the odds of Styles or Love falling to 7.

The premium position thing is a real deal. Ditto on that same note, Delane going earlier than expected could happen. Feels to me Love is 50-50 going to be there at 7.

Surprised Titans among the group. Draftniks keep saying they are set at WR.

Yeah Bain is super easy for me. He just doesn’t fit the athletic profile standards.

Bailey I actually like, but it’s a tough position and better prospects than him have flamed out. If you could put Bain the player in his body, now we’re talking.

Reese could end up being a tweener. Athletic freak but can’t play edge at the next level.

We’re not talking Mendoza in here, but I don’t see much special about him. Would he be QB7 in Jayden’s draft? He’s got some fire and work ethic, good size too. He’s also kinda weird and could see him losing a locker room really fast if the wins don’t come quickly. I bet he sticks in the league as a backup at least because of the work ethic, but sure don’t see franchise QB.

I haven’t bothered with the OL guys since they’re not on our radar, but they all seem more like products of a poor class than true top 10 prospects to me.
