The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Dillon is another of that good safety class, should go late day 1.

He was one of those players that really stood out whenever I watched Oregon. He is very versatile, good tackling, in coverage, in man

It’s interesting because I think the wreck of 2025 has made some people forget just how good peak Jayden was his rookie year, playing with full health and confidence. Like, conceptually people believe that Daniels could be elite, but I think some forget just how elite he’s already looked at times. The ball placement he consistently showed that year in high leverage situations…unreal.

If we get that Jayden again, with some help, I’m not sure how good Blough has to be early on. Elite QB play, especially the off-schedule stuff that rescues poor play calls, has a way of hiding a lot.

I’m not high on this coaching staff, but I think Jayden can be so good that it doesn’t matter. That’s essentially how I feel about 2024.
Well I hope you are right but I'm going to have doubt about what Blough can do until we see it. He has a hell of a lot on his plate. I hope he can kill it. or at least do above average which he could do mainly because of Jayden

I’m pretty skeptical of Blough having time to figure it out, even if he is naturally predisposed to being good at it. We’ll see. It’s more Jayden I have faith in to buy Blough time. If it’s going to work out, that’ll be why. It’ll be interesting, at least.

My thing with Tate is I just don’t believe he is a number 1 in the NFL. He’s never been asked to be a number 1 either and has never shown up in big games. You don’t take a WR2 at #7. He’s played beside Egbuka and Smith. Two absolutely ELITE WR talents. Tate potentially going higher than Egbuka is insane and just shows how weak this draft is. I don’t think there is a single WR worth a first round grade this draft.

I don’t think it would be crazy if Tate ends up a better NFL player than Egbuka. I like Egbuka but he cannot separate at all. Most of his spectacular plays earlier on were contested catches. Great plays, but his absolute inability to get open for his QB showed up more and more as the year went on. You can’t be elite in the NFL like that unless you’re a big slot slant merchant like prime Michael Thomas, and that’s not how they’re using him.

Tate may not be a complete Alpha #1 but I think there’s a nonzero chance he turns out to be better at his NFL role than Egbuka is at his.

Eh, that's a tough call on a now NFL proven Egbuka. He is a route running stud and YAC monster. Now I'm not saying Tate can't match or beat out Ebbuka but Emeka separates through his footwork and his QB knowing exactly where and when he will be.

Even if he's a wunderkind like Sean McVay, it took McVay and Cousins through half the season to find a groove. McVay had some quotes on the sidelines in 2015 about his play calling, saying "this is my first year too" to Cousins when Cousins thought other concepts would work better in that moment.

They found their footing eventually, helped by Jordan Reed breaking out.

The more talent we put on the field the easier it will be for Jayden and Blough to figure out what their groove should be.

I would love a trade back, but I'm just leaning toward Love being the answer to help out everybody.

I really don’t think he was separating much at all. Once the low percentage plays dried up he did almost nothing down the stretch. Final six weeks of the season or so he was invisible.

He’ll improve and maybe what I’m saying will end up obsolete once we see him again. But right now I question his ability to consistently get open in the NFL. Capable of spectacular catches, though.

To be fair this was true of Pickens in his early years as well, so sometimes these low-separation spectacular contested catchers figure it out. But Egbuka doesn’t get open at will the way the elite guys do.

He is like a technician with his route running. When I've watched him he is able to clear defenders it's about timing with his QB.

We heard a lot of negatives about our receivers not being able to run routes or be wear Jayden expected them. QB's don'tt have that issue with Emeka

I don’t think he and the QB all of a sudden fell out of sync and lost their timing down the stretch. Egbuka looks good out there but his separation score is pretty much equivalent to Keon Coleman. I think DB’s figured out how to play him tightly down the stretch, when injuries caused a lack of other weapons to distract attention from him. He had most of his success across from Evans/Godwin when they were each healthy and then couldn’t carry when there were injuries.

I’m open to being wrong on this though, I want to like Egbuka and his play the first half of the season was a blast tbh

Well I didn't watch hi at the end of the season and def not in a position to argue, you could be right. I know comparing Coleman though doesn't really fit because they are opposite player types. WIih Coleman you are supposed to be good with contested catches...but he has kind of sucked at that

Coleman comp only exists because they have nearly identical separation scores. That’s what’s scaring me about Egbuka. Getting a bit off topic though, needless to say regardless of all this I’d still take Egbuka on this roster in a second 😂

I watched Chris Bell (6'1", 220) against Pitt, and he’s a legitimately polished route runner. Very few false or wasted steps, and his stops on comebacks and curls are fairly crisp. His hip sink on sharper in- and out-breakers isn’t elite, but it’s solid for a bigger receiver. He’s not explosive like Brennan Thompson, but he has good speed for his size — DBs struggle to stay in phase vertically if they don’t play off coverage. On vertical routes, once he gets even, he does a good job stacking the DB. When corners flip their hips to run but keep their eyes back on the QB and play with cushion, he’ll subtly drift into their blind spot. That makes it harder for the DB to anticipate in-breakers, out-breakers, or comebacks because they lose clean vision of his body language. His release package is mostly clean — one rep with some wasted steps, but generally he gets into the DB’s frame, swipes hands, and gets into his route efficiently.

What really stood out was his zone feel. Against Cover 2 on a spot concept, he leaked perfectly into the honey hole between the corner and safety. On another rep, he settled in the triangle between three defenders and made himself available in the void. That’s high-level spatial awareness. He understands leverage and coverage structure. There was one option route where he probably should have sat instead of continuing, but it wasn’t a clean read — the linebacker’s leverage made it muddy. At the catch point, he had one drop on a quick out he should’ve secured and another tough fully extended attempt over the middle. But he also made an outstanding play on a comeback where the corner had inside leverage and the QB underthrew it, leaving it inside. He had to play through the defender’s hands just to tip the ball up and ended up securing it himself. That was a really impressive rep.

There weren’t many true YAC opportunities, but on the couple he got, he showed some natural instincts — subtle start-stop moves to squeeze out an extra yard or two rather than just running into contact. Nothing electric, but functional and smart. Pitt’s corners weren’t elite, and Miller Moss doesn’t have a big arm, but Bell looked like a technically sound, coverage-aware receiver with real vertical IQ and enough speed (probably low to mid-4.4 range) to be a real vertical threat. Not flashy, but nuanced in ways that tend to translate. He was a little demonstrative when he was open and didn't get the ball. Add that to ACL tear he suffered this year and I am not sure if he will go day 1 or day 2. But based just on this game tape and this draft class he should be a day 1 player.

I've been burned at safety or LB more by betting on the big time athletes in cases where I was uncertain about their instincts -- versus the top end instinctive read and react players.

So when I started watching Downs, I was wowed immediately by how he seemed to always be around the action. That trait isn't that easy to find.

The read and react types who study and lead like an Ed Reed type -- I'd take over the physical freak everything being equal.

Especially for this team, for how many years, do we have these narratives about the secondary being "confused". I am sick of it.

But Downs isn't an Ed Reed type either. He doesn't play like him at all.
