The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

And that's why this draft kinda feels win win.

An amazing wide receiver falls to us? We need that!
A devestating edge falls to us? We need that too!
A rangy linebacker with passrushing skillls? Bring 'im on!
A really smart, instinctual game changing safety? Nothing wrong with high quality pastry!
A generational running back? Why would we say no!

I like Bill (and his story enough) that I think we will be good without at RB without Love. I sort of feel about getting Love the way I did about getting Connerly. I thought we were set at right tackle with Coleman and given his play at left I think I was correct, but the team wanted to do better than set and thought Connerly a future star. So while Love would be my least favorite pick I could easily get behind the idea. Trading good for great isn't a bad thing. I just think that Bill with a year under his belt to get better at the pass pro, get a little stronger, and work on his receiving skills could be a top third RB so I'd look to pass rusher first, everything else second.

To me I need Peters to go 100 miles an hour in FA and address needs. If he does so, Love would be fun.

The got the O line IMO, they got a running QB. They got two TEs who are great blockers. Imagine adding an elite RB to that mix?

Ok, I want Bailey now
Wait, no, I want Tate
Check that, gimme Downs
Fuck it, I’ll take Love
😱
Me trying to decide between Downs and Bailey

As much as I would like Love, or even Tate, or Downs, I’m taking Bailey. Positional value trumps here and as SIP keeps referencing,

Bailey has been the best pass rusher in college for 2 years, has elite physical tools, 400lb bench, 550lb squat, I read somewhere a 4.52 40, long arms. He had 13.5 sacks this year, so you aren’t projecting tools.

You can get. WR, RB, safety, in the middle rounds or FA. You’re not going to get a productive young edge, with elite athletic tools, that way.

If Bailey is there, I run to the podium.

In general the Monday presser with Peters should be fascinating. I do think Quinn and Peters are high character guys so I don't mind this in a snarky way but I felt Quinn and Peters were a bit smug and arrogant this off season.

It's easy to see Quinn is humbled. And he's in my book said all the right things in these press conferences. He comes off genuinely hurt by what has happened. And he's not making excuses. If this was the same exercise with Rivera, Rivera likely would be defiant and all about excuses.

I am very interested to see Peters who IMHO came off more arrogant than Quinn did this off season. He often has that wide grin as if he's on top of the world. That's fine to me when things are going well. But am very curious to see how he is this Monday.

Senior Bowl should be fascinating a lot of prospects going.
Remember this one?

I low key hope someone falls in love with an OT at the Senior Bowl based on a single rep like this and gives us a ton of picks...and we still get Downs or Bailey...and Sydney Sweeny shows up at my front door...and my wife is totally okay with it...

He's also a forced fumble machine. If I recall 10 forced fumbles in his college career.

I'm beginning to believe Bailey will be gone by the time we pick.

My current list of guys I want in the first:

Tyson
Tate
Bain
Love
Faulk

This list will change many times and is not in order.

I’m really looking forward to tonight’s game, as the three defensive players I think can be game changers at the next level will all be on the field together.

You can get a good safety for 8-12M/year. You can get a very good safety for 12-15M/year. Anything above that is reserved for pro-bowlers/all-pros. There are 10 safeties with AAV above 15M.

Same with linebacker. Only 4 guys making more than 15M AAV there.

RB only has 2 guys above 15M.

There are 25 edges above 15M AAV. A true #1, even if they're a bit below the Myles Garrett/Maxx Crosby tier, is going to run you 30M. Really solid #2s are gonna run you probably close to 20M, or at least 15M, unless you grab them before they break out (something we almost got with Dorance before he got injured). 27 WRs making more than 15M too.

I'd love Downs (or Love), but from a resource allocation standpoint, it feels like a mistake. We have ALL THIS MONEY but when you start digging into re-signings some of that gets eaten quickly and starts to limit our ability to do big splash signings. On the one hand, I'd love a Pickens get, but on the other, he's probably costing 37-40M/year.

Reese, I dunno. He can kind of do everything, which scares me because our coaches will probably play him in the wrong place. We need simple players who do one thing REALLY good so our coaches can't get too clever by half and play them out of position (latest example I'm thinking of is Newton). If Vic Fangio was our DC I'd be all about Reese. Reese's saving grace is he can rush the passer, even if he's not a great pass rusher, so you can add a lot of value for him that way.

But on the whole, the same AAV for Pickens (37-40M) can probably get you a top 3 FA at all 3 of Safety, Linebacker, and RB. So hard for me to sign off on Downs.

Love is absolutely off my radar (which probably means he'll be the pick). 4th best rushing attack on the year despite the lull in the middle of it, and all we're really missing if a pass catching RB, and you've got Breece and White hitting FA this year. RB just an absolute luxury pick, and the results would probably be like Jeanty, who has a 3.7 average on a bad Raiders team.

I used to be a big “resource allocation is first in all scenarios!” guy. Still am in most scenarios. But for us with a closing rookie QB window I want the players that put us in best position to win as soon as humanly possible before JD needs to get paid. So to that end, I don’t care what resources we use as long as we achieve two goals:

1) improve our talent
2) get younger

I will be back to resource allocation mode as soon as the rookie QB contract window closes.

Scrolling through the top DE/EDGEs in the league--the majority are 1st rounders: 8 of the top 15 are 1st rounders. You have the occasional stud in the 2nd, like Bonitto, or later like Crosby--but Garrett, Hutchinson, Parsons, Burn, etc. It's becoming like QBs, sure you can strike gold in later rounds, but the scales are tipping towards the top picks.

It’s because it is such a traits based position

$8M-$12M a year for baseline competence is not crazy. I knew Will Harris would suck. He was a career scrub who had a “career” season with the Saints last yeae.

Hopefully they don’t go bargain bin shopping at safety next year

I agree with you conceptually, but more as a “ballpark tiebreaker” meaning I don’t want to take a B EDGE over an A at another position (within reason, excluding extremely low value positions) just because of the financial implications. Because more than anything, even more than a min-maxed cap health situation, we need impact players. I don’t want a solid EDGE over an elite S or all-pro RB.

Looks like the Eagles aren’t interested in ‘getting down’ with Quinn’s ‘crew’. 🤣

I am more positive on Quinn than some. But I thought the sequences in the Eagles game of Quinn giving up on the game and then setting up the rematch like its a big deal was the low point for me.

Siranni I think checkmates Quinn with this one.

A. Insults Washington some more with we will play the backups

B. If Washington wins they will look pathetic if Quinn does an over the top post game speech about how we showed them

C. If the Eagles win with their backups it makes Washington look even more pathetic

Yeah, the other side of this is I'm really high on Tate, Tyson, and Bailey. I'd love to pair Tate with Terry as a mentor for a year before Terry, who will be 32 in 2027, inevitably starts to decline a bit. Tyson is a lock to be a WR1 but for injury concerns. And Bailey just is the proto-typical edge build while also being very productive in college. So even if we could say Caleb is an elite S, or Love is an elite RB, I think Tate/Tyson/Bailey are at really only a hair below elite if even.
