The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

7 right now feels like the tail end of the higher end prospects most of us seem to be interested in. Granted its still very early in the process so things perception wise will shift. We got the Senior Bowl. Medicals. Character stuff. Combine.

Watching teams all over the league I'm convinced the biggest weakness on this team is the secondary. I saw QBs with time to throw but nobody was open. That never happens here, when a QB has time (which is often) there is always an open receiver. I don't see secondaries routinely leaving guys wide open, we've seen that every week for 2 years. Those teams can tackle, ours team never seems to be able to stop a player in his tracks.

The need for a legit WR is probably going to force them to take one in the 1st, and I can't argue with that. Good WRs are very expensive on the free agent market. But man a safety like Downs would make a big impact on this defense.

He would as to Downs.

As far as WR, its IMO an even bigger need. Watching the SF-Bears game last night, I couldn't believe how open their WRs were. Suter who does film review likes to say no one really seperates well with Washington Wrs, not even Terry who is more of a contested catch guy.

The Bears have D. Moore, yet still draft Odonze so they can have two big time WRs while adding depth, too. You'd think that's plenty but they don't stop. They have Kmet, yet draft Loveland in the first. And draft Burden in the 2nd. And add depth. The modern NFL is about the passing game. And to your point you also want to be able to stop it.

But you also want to add playmakers that are hard to stop where you got to pick your poision. And heck if anyone goes down, have ready competent replacements. The Bears have done that to perfection. The 49ers too albiet have had some bad injury luck but even with that bad luck, they have Jennings, McCaffrey, Pearsall. They draft a first rounder in Aiyuk. They have Deebo at the time still. they have Kittle. they have Jennings. Yet they still draft Pearsall in the first. And yeah some attrition happens but that's part of the point, expect attrition but preempt it.

Updating. I had one slightly wrong yesterday, Buffalo-Eagles swung it 2 games not 3

Ok they can pick at worse 7 so if Quinn gets his dream win in Philly, we will see them in 2 weeks odd bravado stuff from him its not the end of the world.

But if they lose. We got as many as 5 teams that can be leapfrogged.

Giants - Dallas -- Giants win.
Titans -- Jags -- Titans win. But if the Jags win it does advance 1 game as to SOS for us versus the Browns. By advance meaning weaken SOS which is what we want
Browns -- Cincy. Browns win. But if Cincy wins, it strengthens the Browns SOS by 2 games so helps us with a tiebreaker against them
Jets -- Bills. Jets win.
Cards -- Rams. Cards win.

Now if everything goes against us, and its purely a SOS war with the Browns. The two SOS are close right now.

Monday night we want the Rams to beat the Falcons -- swing of 1 game SOS

Next Saturday
We want the 49ers to beat Seattle. Swing of 2 games SOS

Next Sunday
We want the Pats to beat Miami. Swing of 1 game SOS

And as I mentioned we want the Titans to win and the Browns to win. But if they don't it helps tiebreaker SOS with the Browns. 1 game for the Titans game and 2 for the Bengals one.
I hear ya, SIP. Philly is fighting for playoff position. I think they beat us in Philly and to help with that, hopefully we play the 1pm game before Philly knows their fate with the other teams playing later.

I posted this on the draft order thread

I think all these 4 have to go our way or something like that: Rams (tonight), Titans, Pats, 49ers to win. Though looking at those matchups, its not crazy, its doable. 49ers beating Seattle is the big one, it swings 2 games, and that seems the hardest one to go down.

Digesting this further, it doesn't seem that wild. Rams are favorites versus the Falcons. Titans over Jags. Pats over Jets. The wildcard one is SF versus Seattle. A SF win swings it 2 games so that's the big one on Saturday. If Seattle wins lol the dream dies as to SOS versus the Browns.

JMT, but Tyson, Tate, Lemon, Boston and Brazzell II are all good and one will be available in the 1st round. Again, I go trade down in the mid 1st (due to mega youth and lack of resource player needs) and you can grab one of them.

Pass the Tylenol, LOL. Too much for me to chew on at the moment. I need another cup of coffee. Hoping for the best. :)

I am not interested in "good". Don't get me wrong I do think this FO is more likely to land on the good version of the mid first round -- a Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne than the busts: Josh Doctson, Dotson, E. Forbes, J. Davis.

But my point is once you hit the middle of the first you are in range of the good players to busts players generally. Yes, exceptions exist but I like to play the odds versus assuming best case scenario.

In theory they all sound great early, all these players, they are hyped as best case scenario. Boston is the next Drake London. Lemon is the next St. Brown. But, I don't fall in love with the narratives around these players.

Lets take Caleb Downs. You watch him and its not hard to see he's very likely going to be a great player. I like Boston. But does he scream elite to me? Nope. Could i see him as a bust? Sure, if he struggles to seperate he could be another Treadwell or Burks, etc.

I just ideally don't want to roll the dice on a player if I can get a stud. And its not just about that. It's about the ripple effect a stud player has on the whole team. You can see for example the difference of the Eagles when Jalen Carter plays and doesn't play. Can we say the same about Daron Payne? And Payne is one of the rare mid first success hits from this team.

Respectfully, I get you but I see it another way and you know this from previous post we've had. AP put us in this position to some degree. This team is older than most. We need a youth movement. He inherited a mess and has done a C+ job thus far. We way overplayed our talent level the first year, I think with what what he acquired in FA and the draft. The verdict is still out (full potential) on his first and last year's draft. AP needs to go after sure fire talent that fills big needs in FA (spend, spend, spend) and hit BIG on draft picks by accumulating more picks and earning what he was paid and projected to do as GM.

I said at the beginning of the year, before we completely fell apart: we have no one on this defense that keeps OCs awake at night. Luvu, before getting put in horrible positions and misused for a variety of reasons, is a nice playter; same with Armstrong. I like Sanristil and Amos; but they're not top CBs. I understand our lack of picks--but elite players are more likely in the top of the first than mid-second. The only one that is routinely in the mid-1st range I think could be elite is Bailey (basing that on what I've read on here, other draft sites, videos, etc) I would love Downs at 7--also a field general, which we sorely need.

If we can add: another Ryan Anderson, Jarvis Jenkins, Ben Sinnott, J. Newton, Sua Cravens, Trent Murphy, Quan Martin, give me that 2nd rounder -- then sign me up for the mid round first round lottery to do it: Jamin Davis, Jonathan Allen, Daron Payne, Josh Doctson, Emmanuel Forbes.

I'd much rather have that than a Patrick Surtain, Bijan Robinson. Malik Nabers, etc. Quantity >>> Quality.

This team has proven again and again how much this works. Peters i am sure is still celebrating and laughting at the Eagles for giving two picks for Cooper DeJean.

lol, just having some fun. But I don't get any reflex love to trade down no matter what. I'd be good with trading down only if they got a 2027 first rounder. the 2nd round is so much a crap shoot, and its not only this team that sucks at landing good 2nd round players.

But in short, I want a great player. I'd take a great one over a good one and a solid one. And by a mile.

And assuming they get a good player in the mid first and a solid one in the 2nd is running with an optimistic view. It's just as likely that its a bust in one of those two rounds and possibly both.

I don't mean this sarcastically but your push to trade down is helping me shape my own opinion even more. It's making me for example love the idea of taking Downs a bit more as an example. Downs to me looks to me so easily as a great player. The ones you mention in a trade down not so much -- not saying they can't be great but it takes more imagination to see it.

So for me I am starting to think why mess around. You can pick a high floor-high ceiling player, do it, they are rare and you don't find them easily later in the draft.

Just starting to think of shopping in the middle of the first round feels a bit nauseating to me even more than I thought it would.

In Peters' shoes, I'd only consider it if they got a 2027 firsr rounder or he's convinced that a player dropping is a top 10 talent. Because this debate brings me back to my feelings when we've picked in that range and my biggest memory of it is wow I wish we could have been picking in that top tier because so many prospects I love are gone.

As for 2nd rounders...I kinda want Sinnott to go into next year as TE1. Watching Bullock's analysis of him since Ertz went down, I want to see him playing full-time. I'd love to see him on some TE screens.

I get you and if AP does go with a player at #7, #6 #5 overall etc., good to go but he better hit on that player. I am always in the "don't put all your eggs in one basket". That's me though. I like a GM who wheels and deals, believes in themselves by going against the grain, picking up more picks and earning a rep of find gems. Once the team is built and is purring then go for your sure-fire players. That's me though. A boring world it would be if we were all the same. :)

As we know, it takes two. GM and HC. GM has to pick the talent and the HC with his staff must develop it. It's hard to find both that work well hand in hand (i.e. GM and HC). Too many times, I think one gets too involved in the other's work. The system use to be GM>HC but over the years, HC was GM too. Now back to that of players. My hopes are that AP stays in his lane (not letting others like HC or coaches or anyone for that matter) influence who he chooses and select the player(s) that will best help the team. In the end, he is held accountable from the player aspect (talent and contribution) to the team and community. He thrives, earning a new contract or dies by being fired or let go.

Why in the world would you not want coaches inputs on players? That's what Allen and Snyder did with Haskins--no one wanted him other than those two buffoons. Any good GM works with their coaches to determine skill sets, roles, needs, wants, etc.

Sinnott is a good blocker, and TE's take time. I don't know about #1 but am good with him as #2.

Medrano was a buddy buddy pick for Norton Jr. and a wasted 6th round pick. In the day, there were 12 draft picks and before that, many more. Each pick is important to hit on. You get the input from others, sure but in the end make the pick yourself and don't be over influenced by others. I think this is an issue that AP has.

What do you think the hit rate is for a late 6th rounder?

You mean a highly athletic player than needs to be developed? What do you want out of a 6th rounder?

So do you want input from coaches or not?
