It's me. I would dislike Downs. Kinda. Not really.

But it would be an inefficient use of resources in most scenarios, so unless the FO "solves" edge and WR in FA, Downs would be a great player shoring up a position, while other parts of the team struggle. Can easily get a B to B+ level safety in FA for not too much, 10th highest paid safety was like 15M AAV. Chinn only got 8M/year, Harris was brought on for 4M. If we just actually pay one or two guys, instead of trying to find something in the bargain bin, we'll be fine back there.

No it wouldn't be the A-level of play Downs probably brings, but you're gonna pay less for a GOOD safety than you will for a good edge defender or WR2, and a lot less than you would for a great edge defender or WR1.

There are scenarios where Downs works, but not many. Insofar as Edge/WR/Safety are concerned (ignoring other positions) you probably have to go win the Pickens sweepstakes, while also adding like a Doubs level guy, then add some B-level edge rushers and earmarking your 2027 first for an edge rusher. Pickens is really the only "elite" guy available in WR/Edge FA who is under 28 years old, so he can hold down the fort for a few years while we reload talent.

But if you don't land Pickens, the best WR on the market (Aiyuk aside) is Pierce, which sure, maybe Terry/Pierce works in 2026, but you pretty much immediately need to go find a WR1 replacement in 2027, and barring some weird FA developments (or moving more picks for players, which, uhhhh....we should NOT do) means we gotta fill WR1 and Edge1 with 1 first rounder in '27.

The one non-Pickens scenario (outside of like, landing another Terry level player with our 3rd) where things work out is if we can trade back, add a 2027 1st, and still draft Downs. Then you've got ammo for a WR and Edge in 2027. It's not impossible, but I also find it unlikely, since we're probably picking too late for any of the QB hype to help fuel a trade-up.

I don't know if there is a good one. Edge's don't have short arms in general.

The one comp I have seen that kind of fits is George Karlaftis, He was selected 30th in 2022. Bain is a better run defender and tackler.

Maybe Trey Hendrickson. Both around 270 pounds. Both have short arms, though Hendrickson at about 32 flat has an inch and a quarter on Bain. Both win the same way, speed to power (outside shoulder) and counter moves. I do think Karlaftis as the other poster metnioned is a decent comp as he also has the same traits (shorer arms, around 270 pounds. Karlaftis also wins the same way (outside shoulder and counters) though with 32.5 inch arms he also uses a true bullrush which probably won't be available to Bain wih 30.75 inch arms.
 
Since we're not in the market for a QB, I love the fact that most of the mocks have QBs going to be and two. A player who is rated best at a position of need is almost guaranteed to drop to us.

I like it except for the Giants likely being one of those two picks and who can trade a haul for it. IMO the Giants already have the more talented roster but suffer from bad coaching but that might change soon. Hopefully Dart's recent struggles are the real him versus his hot start.

Unfortunately I have the same impression of the Giants. Their roster is not that bad. Specifically on defense I feel like they are significantly underperform their talent level. On offense their O-Line is shaky and I am not convinced Dart will be a franchise QB (though it certainly still within the range of possibilities) and especially with Nabers out, it may be more of a talent issue this year than coaching issue, but that defense with the right coaching has the personnel to be solid. If they end up with the number 1 pick we may end up better in the long run with them trading down and taking a haul and then Dart not developing into a franchise QB rather than them taking Mendoza who I like a bit more than Dart (though Mendoza is not guaranteed franchise QB either). But worse case scenario is Dart does develop into a franchise QB and they trade down for a haul and build a nice roster to support him.
 
I wouldn’t go CB. It’s got to be WR, Edge or Love. Tate, Bain, Mesidor (he’s going to jump up draft boards), Faulk, Love.

That’s the list. For now.
 
I am not a hot takes kind of guy with the draft where I go against the grain just to do it. But I've talked on and off about Mesidor, and I think he might be better at least at edge than Bain. Both dudes have incredible motors but with questions about arm length.

Some buyer beware with Mesidor in that his biggest season is happening now while he's almost 25 years old. And he has some past medicals.

But he is such a violent player with such strong-active hands - so powerful and an insane motor.

I think we have options at the moment. So, if the draft plays out where there are more than one QB worth taking (meaning Moore and Simpson enter), I think trading down is a legit option that we wouldn’t just be doing to do it (like it’s felt in the past).

We could trade down and get Love potentially. Heck, if Mesidor’s age is an issue we could wind up with Love and Mesidor. I mean I doubt it, but there is potential if he stays as a round 2 type. This is a year where I’m not really sold on the high end talent but I think the mid round 1-2 guys are all pretty close and talented.

I’m not sure RB is the pick for us but I have felt in the past that we should have. I wanted Gibbs in the worst way. Obviously, we weren’t able to get him. But blue chip talent is blue chip talent.

KC Concepcion declared today, too. So that’s another receiver wrinkle. He’s not necessarily who I’d want (but maybe) but that may cause another guy to drop.

I’m interested to see the receivers’ 40 times.

Moore seems 50-50 as entering depending on the draft geek. I am hoping he doesn't enter because I don't want the Giants to have the ability to get a haul in this draft. Granted Giants could end up with the first pick where it doesn't matter.

I've talked some about Concepcion, assuming he's fresh in your mind because of the U game -- explosive, fun player but his hands can be shaky. To me he blends in with some other similar style playeres like Branch, S. Bell, Cooper all whom intrigue me. I am guessing one of them willl be there in the early third.

Yeah I was a big Gibbs, guy too. I am a big Love guy as well who I think is a better prospect than Gibbs.

Been watching some Anthony Hill Jr. today. Had an unreal 2024. Decent this year. Question is why? From what I can tell he is playing dinged up with something. He does not have the same burst he had last season. Guy was probably a top 15 pick in last years draft. Some value there if we do trade back imo.

I have liked Hill for Washington since last year. He was the first player I posted about in this thread back on page 2 or 3. He fractured his hand early in the year, left that game early and missed two others. The injury and time missed affected his stats this year.

Thought about this more after safety talk in the FA thread, and I just, logically, don't see how *THIS* FO takes Downs.

They've seemingly willfully ignored the safety position, in what can only be viewed as purposeful treating of it as a position of secondary importance. Didn't re-sign Kam Curl, okay, brought in Chinn, but then didn't re-sign Chinn, ooookaaaay, but then ALSO chose not to go sign anyone big in FA, and grabbed Will Harris out of the bargain bin, when really good players like Hufanga were only getting 13M AAV contracts. To go from "meh we really only wanna spend like...4-5M per safety TOPS" to "let's spend a top 10 pick on one" seems like a big leap.
