The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

Do we need to think about using a mid round draft pick on a QB?

It is evident that we need a dependable backup QB(s). Is Mariota the answer moving forward, also will he come back? We have been fortunate that he has been able to stay healthy as he has taken some hits this year. It would be nice to have a dependable QB that perhaps would be QB2 or QB3 in his rookie year then become our QB2 the following year.

I can see them thinking about this if we had a full compliment of picks. Perhaps if they make a trade down this becomes an option and yeah, I know we have sooo many other need

The other thing I think about with AP and DQ was how much they like the larger edge/end guys and why they really liked Hendrickson and Bosa. Would they be looking at the larger players or go the root of a Reese or Baily type.

Also if they decide the best thing for the team is to take a slight trade down to add more pieces, could they look to a Styles type?

McKinley drafted by Atlanta in the first while Quinn was the HC, is a smaller speed rusher. Parson was a hybrid LB-pass rusher, not the buggest dude. He's brought Fowler almost everywhere he's went.

So not sure they are stuck on a type.

Out of the two, Bailey is the safer pick given the experience, the more finely grained skillset and the clear role. There is always a risk with hybrid players as you need the right DC to unlock their skillset

He seems to be in theory the safer pick. His body type seems to fit today's NFL more.

Faulk lacks pass rushing moves, bend or production. Big dude. But raw.

Bain with those short arms.

With Bain I really want to know his arm length, if it's not as short as it looks to my eyes, I am more intrigued but if its something ridiculous like 30 inches and change am out.

No doubt - it's absolutely fair to question their player selection. The Datsun over Olave and Sainraistl over Dejean are definitely personnel failures, that's for sure!

The issue I have is shooting down the idea of trading back based on the hindsight of "what we could have done." It's an unfalsifiable argument. We don't know what they would have done had they not moved the pick, but to credit them with the best possible outcome assures that you are skewing the results.

Dejean was definitely the higher pedigreed player as to draftnik consensus by a clear peg or two, heck if I recall PFF had him as a top 15 player in that draft.

To your point was it that Peters was good with trading down because he didn't agree with sort of the draftnik consensus? Maybe. But that's to me even more damning. I'd like to think that Peters wasn't thinking yeah Sainristilll is even better than Dejean, let those fools the Eagles take him. I'd like to think he did the more common reason people trade down, I'd rather have two players than one.

Well the people who selected Datsun/Nissan over Olave are no longer here.

And would deJean be as good here? He'd be the primary CB here, and not the slot guy, and not surrounded by a lot more talent in a better scheme.
 
I'd add Dejean has the size and physicality that's more common to Quinn's scheme than Sainristill.

It's hypothetical but the point is if we are going to say that maybe trading down in Peters case wasn't wanting 2 players over 1 but simply he thought Sainristill is as good or better than Dejean -- I doubt it. lol, Dejean seems much more profile wise a typical Quinn corner than Sainristill.

I think its much more likely it was the conventional reasons most teams trade down which is they wanted multiple shots at the lottery over 1 shot.

And we've seen that approach with this team with every GM for decades and they were on the losing end on every deal.
 
I'll use a hypotetical example as for trading down.

Lets say Carnell Tate is the next Pickens as some purport and ends up a stud. We pass on him and trade down to lets say 12, and take Lemon and wahoo we get both Lemon and lets say Zion Young in the 2nd round. Let's say Lemon, who doesn't have elite traits, ends up a solid WR, and Zion Young, also without elite traits, ends up a solid edge. And look am not being hyperbolic. Getting any solid player for this team in the 2nd round is a minor miracle.

Do we gain more from having an elite player if again it goes down that way -- where we got two studs ay WR that teams have to game plan for? Or better adding two solid players?

I think clearly its about adding an elite player. So if you are trading down IMO, you want to both make sure you aren't passing on an elite player and also believng you are trading to a place where the next guy is close to the player you are passing over.

Especially if you are trading in the division, if you are giving Dallas your pick because you think they are fools for wanting Dexter Lawrence or thinking Trent Muphy and Spencer Long >> Dexter Lawrence then pull the trigger. If you think Sainristill and Sinnott >> Dejean, then do it.

If you think yawn Tyler Lockett, lets give our pick to seattle and we can get Ari Kouindjio, Swain and Jarrett -- THREE players!. Wow. for the price of Lockett, lets pull the trigger.

lol, so many recall the first round trade down failures and the most recent 2nd round trade down, but there are other ones like the ones I mentioned that some seem to have forgotten.

So my default position is no longer 2 players are better than one. It has to be the right setup.
 
^ It's also that you need to right person selecting the right players. There are always other players teams could have taken that have proven to be better pro players as time progresses.
To that point it is easy to just refer us missing on Darrisaw and Gonzo for instance

I would go the UDFA route for a college QB. Especially in this draft.

Demarcus, not Dexter (I call Derrick Henry "Travis" all the time), before someone starts spouting off that we could have had Dexter Lawrence. But yes, your point stands--it was a dumb trade down, as was the Olave pass (or pretty much anything else Rivera did in the draft for that matter). However, there are several successful trade backs. I am not for it or against it--like you said--has to be the right situation. I am hoping for a perennial loser to trade up for Ty Simpson or Moore if they should fall for us.

Another hypothetical: If we're picking 6th; and Downs, Tate, Reese are all gone--do we stay and take Love or take a trade back to 16 with the Panthers and add a ton of picks--including a likely top-5 pick next year too, because we think the Panthers are going to be bad--they always are. I'd make that trade.

I'm not really a fan of Bain's personally but my opinion could change if I dive into the rankings thing again. I'd take 5 or 6 Edge prospects over Bain at this point.

As for several successful tradebacks, which ones for this team?

If they were to identify one they feel confident about and have them evaluated that they are a value at their selection (guessing late day 3) they should go for it. We have a UDFA who no one has confidence in and knows he does not have what it takes to be a starter in the NFL (even for a few games).
