The 2026 Draft Thread - 1st Round - 7th overall

As far as Harman is concerned that is a very valid question. Based on what he has shown repeatedly through his performances to date, I can’t think of one reason that he is still there. Jeff Driskel, despite his age, was miles better.
Yeah I would trust Driskel any day over Hartman. Hartman may able to be a coach someday but he does not have NFL QB in his future. I thought they would try to bring in another young QB to the PS to try to compete with Hartman and earn at least QB3 for next year.

Let Hartman run the scout team now that he is #3 instead of #4. It would be interesting see him play against our starting defense. 😉
Wait I thought we wanted to evaluate what we have against NFL level talent. Maybe we can get the local community college to come in and play against Hartman, it would probably bet better qualified than our current defense.

If we're truly looking at this season as a lost cause, then we need to fully embrace the struggle as a fanbase also.

Just remember that a lot of decision making pressing a re-set button mid season can be maddening because it still hurts to lose on Game Day, no matter the circumstances.

I understand that mentality, but i've always maintained that accepting losing generally never works out. The expectation and message to the players should ALWAYS be that you're out there to win... period. There is a balance of how you can somewhat manage both sides of that conversation, but it's not easy to do in week 10 without the right mentality. You can't pick and choose. In all reality, I wouldn't mind seeing if Hartman can actually be an NFL level player. We've seen a lot to be desired, but why not? Give him 2 - 3 games where he's prepping, playing, and running with the first team. See if he can be a viable backup in the NFL. I want to see Lane lined up at 'X'. See if this cat can actually play the primary role. I wanna see Treylon Burks and see if we can strike a bit of diamond in the rough here.

Injuries have created a lot of these type of opportunities over the 2nd half of the season with Amos likely getting thrust into the primary role with Sainristil on the other side. What about Sinnott and Medrano? How about we bring in 2 - 3 kickers over the next 6 weeks to see if we can get lucky there. If Coleman is meant to play inside, then he better stay there, even if someone on the outside goes down.

A lot of things can happen over the next 2 months, but the biggest thing that needs to be answered is who needs to say, and in what capacity?

Like others have said, I'm pretty confident that what has happened to us to this point will effect the outcome of the season a lot of people would prefer, that the team doesn't necessarily need to 'tank'.
Pretty much exactly my preference for the remainder of the season. Let’s see exactly what we have with the youngsters who are here. With regards to Hartman though I think I saw enough of him in the preseason.

My point with Hartman was that we pretty much know what Mariota and Johnson have to give. Does Hartman have the ability to run with the 1st team through a couple weeks of practice and game plan FOR HIM, and see if there is enough there to actually want to keep. The likelihood is that you don’t win, but you still intend to. Either Hartman has it and you steal a couple games you didn’t expect to. Hartman has it and you still lose, or Hartman answers another roster question and you keep looking for younger, developmental backup QBs.

What’s the worst that happens? He shows out and we can get a 5th rounder for him?

It's really depressing. All of us wait the entire offseason and enter the season with much anticipation and hope, and then this happens.

It really bums me out that we are out of contention halfway through the year. Shit we have not even hit our bye week yet

Serious question. For this team, WR1, or Reuben Bain?

We need impact defenders. But we also should be investing in offense to help develop our young QB. Our weapons suck.
With Terry being out for so long no DC is fearful of anything else we have out wide. I’d love get a blue chipper on defence like Bain, Downs, Reese or Woods but the more I think on it I think a bigger difference maker for us next year is a stud outside receiver. A guy like Tate or Tyson would set us up with the long term replacement for Terry and would provide much needed quality depth out wide.

I see the sense in that. Perhaps he should get a chance. As I recall he was just coming off shoulder surgery in the summer so I’m sure that would have been a factor in his preseason performances.

Entertaining watch. Kiper famous for hating taking Rbs in the first round made an exception and took Love for Washington. I love it. I am digesting a bunch of players in the last couple of days and this should be very interesting if they pick top 10.

I was just watching Peter Woods, DT from Clemson, that dude is an animal, has a motor and consistency (at least in the one game I watched so far) that Payne doesn't have, not on every play but enough watching his game versus LSU. He's a top 5 on the freaks list and he looks it. He can run. Disruptive. Shed tackles with force. Chases down screens. fun watch. Ranked #3 on PFF's board. I got to dive in much more, just getting started.

That mock is BS

Every mock is at this stage. But in their defense they are just having fun and picking who they would in the team's shoes.

While its depressing to have a bad season. The one upshot is its fun to have a top 10 pick where you got big names in play. I am not even close to nailing who i want yet. But I get Kiper's point, J. Love in an offense with Jayden would be a blast. Imagine RO plays where either Jayden or Love could take off. That's nightmarish for any defense.

I'm old school defense wins championships. Should we go sick on offense? Is that new school?

I like the current Tankathon picks of Arvell Reese in round 1 and Elijah Sarrett in round 3. It’ll never happen but I can dream.

To me if you picking top 10, go BPA if there is one who stands out.

As for J. Love, its interesting that Kiper who is the king of the idea of don't take a RB early, he was singing that song before it became cool and teams started doing it made and exception with Love to Washington.

I don't know yet if that's what I would do. But if Love played like he did in college in the pros where he's sort of in that Barkley-Bijan Robinson class of RBs, elite level, he'd be dynamite with a running QB like Daniels. Part of that is Love can catch, he's quite the passing weapon too. This offensive staff seemed in love with Ekeler. This dude is Ekeler on steroids.

I don't believe in stacking BPA.

If a team already has an all-pro left tackle and a younger tackle is highly rated on the board, great, TRADE DOWN and get value for the pick with additional selections to address other areas on the team.

I remember when Washington had Sean Taylor who was the #4 pick in the draft and the team made the decision to take Laron Landry with the #6 pick just a year or two later.

So, there the team sat with TWO top picks at safety and no pass rush from the defensive line, no younger linebackers, deficits at other spots as well.

Under the cap you have to SPREAD OUT the draft picks and cap dollars to put together a FULL 53 man team.

You can't be Cincinnati and spend all of your picks and cap space on a quarterback and 2 wide receivers and then let your offensive line, secondary and linebacking corps continue to be replacement level.

You can't win that way.

Roseman in Philly handles this type of BPA argument all the time in moving up or down in the draft order to suit his board and not miss on players he wants to acquire but also not stacking talent in one area and not in others and having an unbalanced team.

I don't mean it that literally where if you have Tunsil take another LT. Or take a QB, etc. Also while i agree you got to factor need, and premium positions -- you also got to factor the idea that the team lacks game changing players EVERYWHERE.

This team, they lack big time players. One thing that has followed Peters so far from the previous regime is they are decent at finding solid players but aren't finding game changers. The Eagles take Cooper Jean who is more of a game changer slot WR, we take Sainristil and Sinnott. It's been how this team has rolled for years. We got some nice role players. But nothing killer. I think Jay who I know some think we know more about football than he ever will (am not among that group) was talking about this defense from his point of view as a coordinator and said there is no one who scares him. No one who can take over a game or you are fearful of making a big play in a big moment.

More than anything, i want a great player.

My initial thoughts just doing some very basic watching in the context of this team

Reese (LB) -- best case he's sort of like a Parson's type move piece. What they wanted Luvu to be and he's been decent but nothing special. you can keep him at MLB but that seems rich for a top 5 pick or even top 10. But for this team, if they love him I'd guess it would be that they think they couple replicate the Parsons experiment here. Saw something on X about character issues but don't know what that's about.

Bain (DE) -- he's a fun watch, can set the edge. disruptive but not a lot of sacks. Good size but doesn't have long arms. Seems determined to be grear.

Woods (DT) - just watched one game so far, he was really good in that one, disruptive, you can see why he's top 5 on the freaks list, the dude can really move just forward but laterally

Downs (S) -- a do it all safety, playmaker, lol would be perfect for a team that's a train wreck in the secondary

Tyson -- am a sucker for good blocking TEs with good size, and he's that. Makes plays all around the field. Has some injury history that concerns me. Would fit well here between playing Z, blocking well down field and he adjust his routes well to crambiling QBs. Great hands.

Tate -- reminds me some of D. Smith as to making clutch catches in big moments. Great hands. Great body control. Wonder about his speed s combine should be interesting. Also natural Z, good fit to this team.

Lemon -- seems to be the darling of draftniks. Hes a baller. He reminds me some of Ladd McConkey who I loved before that draft. He's a good YAC guy, has a knack of getting open. I wonder about his speed. Want to see his timed speed. And he's a pure slot. I'd rather have an outside WR.

Love would be an interesting choice for sure. Would be dynamic next to Jayden. I like the idea of continuing to get the offence set for a few years before switching draft focus to the defence. If we are smart in FA we should be able to achieve a serviceable defence. How they are coached next year maybe for a different thread!
For me we need to prioritise protecting Jayden through the draft which means giving him more weapons. We need continuity on the OL. I’m playing the same guys the rest of the season and starting them next year. For the draft I’m hoping for a small trade back scenario with a QB hungry team which still allows us to stay in the top 10 and grab Tyson or Tate plus add another pick. For me I’d rather have that stud outside rookie receiver than the RB but Love does look special. Later I’m also grabbing a Center for backup initially but with a longer term plan to develop him as a starter.
I agree that Defences win championships but this roster is not deep enough to cope with more than a few injuries. Our initial 53 only had 5 WRs to start the season, one of whom has a history of injuries. Next year will be a year where Jayden needs to bounce back. We need to help him by building out the offence with younger guys who can grow with him. In another year or two we can switch the draft focus to defence.
That’s my current thoughts at least. We still have some games where perhaps some guys emerge. I hope so and I hope that we will give them the opportunity to do so.

For me, whether on offense or defense, i want to hear teams game planning for a dude outside of Jayden. we cant let Bijan Robinson beat us. Or Barkley. Or Jamar Chase. Or we can't let Parsons wreck the game or Jalen Carter, etc.

Whose that guy on our team? Some teams have multiple guys like that. We got zilch. Even back when Armstrong and Terry were healthy -- are teams saying oh my god we are facing Terry this week or can we stop Armstrong?

This team has been measuring in good to decent players at best for eons.

If we aren't drafting pass rushing DE and deep speed WR in the early rounds of the draft then Adam Peters is blind.

Sheehan ironically on his show today repeating a similar point I made, get game changer players, defense and offense.

for example playing the Lions this week. Gibbs, Hutchinson. Some would say St. Brown. Laporta.

Who are Washington's guys?
