Here's a full list of the Rookie Minicamp invitees

Interesting that 31 year old Nathan Peterman is there. I'm assuming it's to add another arm to the process but I wonder what the parameters are for attendance.

It's kind of fun to see Ricky Sanders number back in play. Be awesome if Lane could fill Ricky's role/shoes.

It always disappoints me how little Rookie minicamp reporting there is. I always look forward to hearing about the pups taking their first steps.

I want to know who's a faster learner, who's a deer in head lights, who surprised, who improved the most, what UDFA made the coaches stop and pay attention, etc.

When I was doing coverage stuff for the team, I got to cover Minicamp in Gibbs first year back. It was our first opportunity to attend a Redskins camp and I drew the lucky number. I actually got to ask Joe Gibbs the very first question at his first presser (my voice was shaking). Anyway, the veteran beat guys (who hated us being there) I guess were checking out the ES coverage and the next day made a snarky comment 'It's not Super Bowl week dude. It's ****ing Minicamp.'

I think the reason you don't see more coverage or get 'insights' is because it's very difficult to determine anything. There is a lot of 'gather round' and coach position group talking. There are a lot of drills. I think it's a lot more about getting youngsters 'acclimated' to how a pro team practices, introducing them to team concepts and formations, etc... than it is about evaluating individual players.

They probably have high confidence and believe they know what they have in drafted rookies. I suspect you are right that there may be a lot more of an 'evaluation' aspect when it comes to the UDFAs.

Just my 2 cents.

That sounds right. I worked very hard while I was a reporter to make sure I didn't get jaded. Too often in sports journalism I hear all sorts of entitled-jaded crap. The reporters forget the cool about what they get to do and how neat it is to be allowed into that world.

Sure, minicamp is small potatoes, but to those rooks taking their first baby steps it is hugely meaningful. Sure draft coverage can get taxing because how often can you hit the same topic and does it really deserve three months of analysis, but for fans daydreaming and aspirant teams the draft and this minicamp may be bigger than the Super Bowl. These are the moments they have worked and dreamed towards their whole life.

Heh. I like this. I think I'll repost it on Bluesky in some fashion.

I don't blame the beat guys (to a certain extent) being irritated we were there. Part of the whole ES acquisition thing was this 'Redskins Unfiltered' concept where Snyder was trying to create his own media empire to shape the message and coverage because, God knows, he was getting gutted constantly by the traditional media outlets. So not only was our being their an affront because we weren't journalists and were invading a press room that was for 'professionals', but we also were part of a threat to their access.

For the most part, we were almost completely ignored, given the cold shoulder. There were 1 or 2 beat guys who were absolute pricks. A couple of them, Bram Weinstein and Rich Tandler, were gracious and helpful and friendly because that's just who those guys are (or were RIP Rich). Most of the coverage folks just ignored us.

Anyway, back to our thread topic :)

La Canfora was actually fine... he spent more time talking about other sports from what I remember (I think he was a big soccer guy). Dave Elfin is the one I remember most - the nastiest guy ever. He walked up to me when I was interviewing Taylor Jacobs in his 2nd season and said 'why are you interviewing someone who had 10 catches last year?'. I mean - just rude as hell. He would also come up when you were interviewing someone he did think worthy, interrupt, and just take over. I let it go because I didn't want to cause any problems for the site. Anyway, enough war stories.

I'm just speculating, but i also don't think the media has been allowed at camp until today.. Reading between the lines with JP Finlays tweet, it feels like he's getting his first look now
