Daniels with Barkley in the backfield would be ridiculous.

I know everyone rags on the Giants for letting Barkley go and I don’t necessarily disagree, however, before this season he was an injury-prone six year veteran runningback who was brilliant when he was able to take the field. He had only managed to play two full seasons and had only broken 1000 yards three times. He hasn’t exactly been a model of consistancy.

This season he rushed 50 more times for 700 more yards than he ever has in his seven year career. That is what we call a Career Year. I don’t care who he’s playing for. It is extremely unlikely he will ever replicate this performance ever again.

He carried the ball 345 times this year, before the playoffs. It is far more likely, given his age and history, that his production will drop off dramatically next year. I think the Eagles are smart enough not to plan on centering their offense around Barkely again next year, because if they do I doubt their offense will be nearly as successful.

As far as Hurts goes, his main value is his size and his ability to run like a runningback. As a passer I don’t think he is particularly scary. The problem with the Tush Push, and I suspect the reason why most other teams rarely use it, is that it is punishing on the QB. I wouldn’t ever want us to run it here. Daniels will take enough hits as it is without finding himself getting mashed between ten linemen four or five times a game. Hurts is big and strong and can take that punishment better than most QBs, but it’s still punishment. It’s possible Philly is knocking a few years off his career by constantly running that play.

Derrick Henry was mentioned earlier in the thread. He is, as was noted, a much more consistent back and far less injury prone.

However, if you look at HIS Career Year, 2020, when he rushed the ball 378 times for 2027 yards … the following year he suffered a massive drop off. In 2021 he only played 10 games and rushed for 978 yards. And this is a guy who has been one of the most durable, dependable, consistent RBs in the league.

It is very difficult for RBs to carry the ball 350 times in back-to-back seasons. There’s a reason most RBs only last about three years in this league. Even the most durable backs have trouble withstanding the pounding they take.
