Tech/Computer advice from me

You have two options.

Go to Ubuntu Forums and get some expert assistance, or research using google.

I haven't run Ubuntu for quite some time as I haven't 'owned' a computer for about 4 years. I get mine on a rent-try-buy scheme, and as soon as it is paid for, we update and start again. The rtb scheme means we have to keep the same operating system it came with (in case in needs to go in for repair), and the techs know nothing about Linux (Ubuntu).

Yea I did think of those. It wasn't a lack of trying. I found some related threads on those forums, but they were just overwhelming for me. The jargon they use is way over my head. The commands you have to run are very complex.
Some things on Ubuntu are just not user-friendly. I'm too used to simple procedures of click this, click that - while Ubuntu involves a lot of manual commands, which means first learning the whole command language, etc.
Thank you for the response though.

I was always in the fortunate position that I ran with Ubuntu, whereas the missus was still on MS, so she had all the hardware connected to her machine. Once I realised there were connection problems regarding various hardware, I then went the dual boot route, but only switching over to Windows when there was something like a lot of printing to be done. Otherwise, I would only run Ubuntu.

SA - I'm sorry to have to bother you again, but I am in a desperate situation here.
Due to some really dumb, impulsive decisions I made, I have apparently damaged some system files, rendering me unable to get into my OS.
I have posted this issue on the Ubuntu forums, but have not received any answers there, that help.
I have a feeling you can provide an answer to this.

The problem started when I was using Synaptic Manager in Ubuntu on a PC.
I was attempting to remove some previous system updates that I did not want.
During this process, I must have inadvertently checked the wrong box(es), and I noticed in the status box that it was installing some things I did not want so I hit "cancel". I assumed this would cut off everything. But strangely the status box then indicated that it was removing several important things that I did not want to be removed, so as a knee-jerk moment, I literally reached for the plug, and unplugged the machine completely from the outlet

I must have done some damage to critical system files, either while in Synaptic Manager, or due to my "sudden forced crash" of the PC during that process, because now I am completely unable to log into the system.

When I reboot or start the PC amd get to the login page, type in the password, the screen then flashes as if it's going to log me in, but then it returns back to the log in page. I know it's not an incorrect password issue, because there's no message about that, in fact no error message at all. It basically just refreshes back to the log-in screen. I also tried to log in as a Guest, but I get the same response.

So I must have inadvertently deleted some necessary system files.
I do not want to have to do a complete re-install because I will lose a lot of important, unsaved data.

When I reboot, there is an option to into recovery mode, which gives me these options

- Clean
- Repair Broken Packages
- Run in failsafe graphic mode
- Check all file systems
- Update grub bootloader
- Enable networking
- Drop to root shell prompt
- System Summary

I've gone through just about every one of those options and it appears to go through an update process without any issues, but then when I attempt to reboot, I have the exact same issue at login.

Is there something I'm doing wrong in the recovery ?
Or is there another method, whether it be manual commands, to repair broken or missing system files ?
Also, I originally used WUBI to install dual OS, both Windows and Ubuntu . Is there a way to use a "Repair" option using that installation file ?
And if there's no possibility to repair the system, is there a way that I can backup my files, without having to login (since I'm unable to do so), and then do just a new install ?

To avoid headaches and any further waste of time, re-installing Ubuntu is the best option. Before you do, access your drive via the Windows partition and save anything of importance.

The only trouble I had was when a faulty kernel was released, and it affected everyone who updated to that particular kernel. I had to use manual code to access and rectify, but the recommended way of remedying (?) any faults is to reinstall to an earlier version, or a version you know that does work.

Linux seems to be a bigger problem than windows for you.

Thanks, that's reassuring to know I won't have to lose any data.
I don't currently know how to save data from the 'opposite' OS, but I will do a search, and probably will be able to find the instructions.

It is a great system in many ways, but it has it's drawbacks, depending on the user.
Maybe it's not a good match for me, or maybe I just still need more time to adapt to it.

When in Windows, go to My Computer, and you'll see everything that is on the hard drive. One of the drive indicators is for your ubuntu partition.

It does take time to adapt, and rid yourself of the Windows way of thinking.

Got that situation taken care of, SA. Thanks again.

I have a question for anyone here.

I'm looking to buy an anti-glare filter for my PC Monitor.
However my purpose for it, has nothing to do with privacy or restricting people in proximity from seeing my screen.
My one and only purpose is to reduce eye strain, as using the PC for long periods seems to irritate my eyes.
Can anyone recommend a particular brand or model for this purpose, or even specifications to look for ?

Anti-glare filters don't change much in quality, so it's a matter of trial-and-error, as well as what are you prepared to pay.

The more you use the computer, the more your eyes adapt. So much so that I have been known to spend upwards of 18-20 hours in front of a computer, and I can still see.

I'm more Sav Rocca/Ben Graham inclined than Jarryd Hayne (49ers). We do have 4 types of football though - Aussie Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union and Soccer.

That makes sense.
Me personally, would cheer for Jarryd Hayne, simply because he's more of an underdog, since there's probably a lot less Aussie/Rugby players who convert to an NFL RB, than to an NFL Punter

A Rugby League player would have no hope becoming an NFL punter as they 'punt' the ball a lot less than an Aussie Rules player. Actually, they would have a better chance at becoming a place kicker. However, someone like Jarryd Hayne never kicks as he isn't required to. As long as he realises he doesn't have to pass the ball he should make the cut as he is known as a straight line runner when he has the ball. He just has to get used to the 300+ lb DLmen who are trying to stop him!

Jarryd would be the first Aussie to try out as an offensive player. Jesse Williams (Seattle) was born in Brisbane and is referred to as an Aussie, but he is a linebacker. All other Aussie NFL aspirants have tried out as punters (Craig Wing, Mat McBriar, Sav Rocca, Ben Graham, Jy Bond, etc,).

Any of you do the windows 10 free upgrade? If so and you wanna talk or need a little help I'm sure someone here can.

From what I've been reading, the only version of W10 currently available is a beta version as the RC (release candidate) won't be available until mid-August. If you have W10 already, expect a lot of errors.

It's being released if you requested it at the end of July. The free beta version on the website is not the OS.

I'm still contemplating on whether to request it early, or to stay with 8.1. I don't want to have to go through teething problems with it on my main desktop, and I don't think my hybrid is capable of accepting a 3GB+ download.

There's not much of a difference but it's going to be available even if you have 7 and want to jump.
