Okay, so I guess this procedure won't work if I have Windows XP.

Bits has nothing to do with RAM. If your pc does not have enough RAM, you will be advised during the install.

When I downloaded (not installed - just downloaded) Ubuntu earlier, it gave me a choice of 32 and 64 bit. But it told me, that if I had less than something like 2.7 Gigs of RAM, the 64 bit would not work, and therefore should choose the 32. Did I misunderstand something ?

As you have an XP pc, yours is most likely pre-64 bits, so a 32 bit version is what you want.

If you have downloaded Ubuntu, you can now choose how you install it. Personally, I would go with a WUBI install as that will install Ubuntu like a program inside of XP. Alternatively, you now have the option to partition your HDD so that you have XP and Ubuntu separately, or you can go the whole hog and wipe the drive completely of XP, and use the lot for Ubuntu.

Just remember one word - minimalistic. You want to the greatest impact (use) from the smallest footprint software).

Keep in mind the this will NOT be a quick install. If I remember correctly, it took me about 4 hours on an ADSL 2+ connection when I last did a WUBI install, but it took just over 100 hours on a dial-up connection to do a clean install (but that was 6.06)

I am going to have to delay completing this project as I am in the midst of moving.
But as soon as I settle into the new place, I may ask about this again, when I resume project !

I hate the fact that my cell company is trying to strong-arm and force me into upgrading to a smart-phone, by taking away each of the features on my non-smartphone, one by one, until it only has a shell of a few features left.

Every couple months I get a new message on my phone from the carrier, regarding a different feature, saying, "We're sorry, this feature is no longer supported......"

I have a friend who I just helped remotely on her laptop. She lets her kids download games from the internet and play them...seems harmless if you are not tech savvy.

It's almost there ! Literally within minutes after posting that, I get yet another message from the carrier stating, that after a certain date, PICTURE MAIL will no longer be supported. So I will no longer even be able to send or receive pictures !!! UGH

my post was kind of tongue and cheek but it's also true.

the carriers are moving off of analog (and have been for a while) and they're also moving off of the old digital spectrum as well. They're all moving to LTE with the spectrum that was sold. They're partially being pushed that direction by the government because the government wants everyone off analog and old digital spectrum for a variety of reasons (this is also why analog TV has gone away)

So eventually the only way to use a cell phone will be to use LTE and that will require an LTE radio. I highly doubt anything other than 'smart phones' will get LTE radios but maybe they'll view the 'flip phone' market as viable still and start producing them. It may take us 10 years to get that point, but I think it'll be more like 5 (complete speculation.)

So while I was half joking, I was also kind of speaking the truth. One day those phones won't work anymore even to make calls.

I'm skeptical of moving voice services to LTE but people much smarter than I seem to think it's not only viable but a significant improvement/necessary.

For example, a "4 Gig" Flash Drive only contains 3.7 Gigs of space - that's 300 Mgs less than advertised, or about 10% less.
And of course, the bigger storage devices are missing even more space.

I also noticed the drives come with some "visible" files on it. They are only 10 mgs, but I'd like to know if I can delete those files, to at least free up 10 mgs of space, or are those files vital to the actual function of the drive ?
For example one file is some type of application called "SanDiskSecureAccessV2.0"
Can I delete that, without harming the actual drive ?

It's not a mis-advertisement, there's technical reasons why that happens

the one marked answer is a good start to the conversation but there are other reasons as well.

those files that come on the drive are normally for installing their software on the computer. their software can do anything from being just garbage software that is unnecessary, to something that provides neat syncing features or backup features. it depends on who made the drive and what they put on it. you should be able to simply highlight and delete the files though.
