Can't seem to find anything that will slide. And there doesn't appear to be a disc in there. So, if it's not jammed by a disc, it seems likely that the problem is electronic-related, rather than mechanical, I'm guessing.

Yup. If i get into a job that doesn't require a smart phone 24/7 on my possession I'll very much consider going back to a standard flip phone.

That's not a joke either.

It doesn't necessarily have to go to that extreme.
There are some really good phones in the middle ground, that are much better than flip phones, but not actually smart phones.

Sucks people feel that way about technology. When they make a mistake they feel stupid or that others think they're stupid. The truth is I couldn't do their job any better than they could do mine. If they saw the number of dumb mistakes I made on a daily basis...

- how many of you mouse over (before clicking) a link to see the URL?

- how many of you check the certificates piling up in your cache and determine if they are valid?

- how many download code without performing integrity checks?

asking cuz I often forget.

too funny! how often have you arrived on scene for network troubleshooting only to learn that the cat 5 was never connected? or that the machine was "dead" cuz the power cable wasn't attached?!

i always mouse of the url before clicking. always. under no circumstance would i do otherwise.

i don't check certificates in my cache, i honestly didn't know they were cached... i need to look into that.

i perform basic integrity checks in my head based on what i see about it but nothing anymore sophisticated

T...was thinking of the Comodo hack in which the CA was compromised. apparently, an easier path than some thought to undermining SSL. validating certs is important.

cache may have been the wrong word to use. let's call it the cert store.

you'll like this: so, let's say a company one works for implements a Cisco technology that only allows a remote IPSec tunnel to the corporate remote portal. the setup won't allow for non-"home" network boots that allow un-mediated web surfing. so, suppose you take that as a challenge. you use a MAC. you..well...modify the launch daemon .plist to disable the capability. except that you screw up the mod and now the machine boots into an error state you don't recognize.

what to do...what to do. fess up or sweat bullets and try to fix it on your own?

I have to preface this by saying I don't quite understand everything you have in that post, but I think I get the general gist of it.

I, personally, wouldn't have done that because violating network use rules is not a good idea. Especially when your career is in that field... if you can't play by established rules when you're expected to understand the importance of said rules, why would anyone in any position of authority/power trust you?

that being said, if I had ventured that far into it I would just fix it myself because I'm rather confident in my own ability to do that. Admitting you broke equipment attempting to subvert rules probably isn't going to go over very well, but who knows.

I broke down and finally purchased a new laptop. I need to MS Office but see that they now offer the single PC version and that office 365 subscription. Both are expensive. Which is the better way to go if I am only installing on one machine. What about 2 machines? I kind off cringe at the idea of renewing a subscription for $100 annually but willing to if thats the best bet.

you can find a 2010 home and student disc for ~$220 on amazon for 3 pc installs.

the online subscription makes sense if you value upgrading office. every time a new version is released you get to upgrade for no cost - provided your subscription is active.

for most people that just doesn't make sense. they'd have to release a new version every 2 years just for the math to work. that being said microsoft has said they're planning on more updates more frequently - likely it'll mean less meaningful features added. either way - most home users just don't need that.

where it might make sense is that one subscription gets you 5 device installs (pc or mac) and you can install office on up to 5 smart phone/tablets if they're android or iOS. it also looks like the subscription to sky drive comes with 20 gigs per office user (your 5 installs) of skydrve space which is a perfect way to back up important documents (pictures/music adds up though...). i use my free skydrive space for doing just that.
