Need your suggestion on what to do with this Java update, which has me confused.
My Avast "Software Updater" indicates I need to update to Java 7, however they say Java 6 is obsolete, so before I can install Java 7, I need to uninstall the old, obsolete Java 6. They say this is "Highly Recommended" and not doing so will put me at risk. But at the same time, it says that even if I DO upgrade that "However, you need to pay attention as possible bad side effects like corrupt programs may appear."

So, I'm confused about what to do, because if I'm understanding them correctly, serious crap can happen to my PC, whether I get rid of the old Java 6 and upgrade, or even if I don't.

So, what should I do ?

Java 6 will no longer receive security updates at some point. I think that point has already passed but I can't remember.

Honestly - I'd say uninstall java unless you need it. If you do need it go to Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Add/remove programs (Or Programs/Features on Windows Vista and later) and remove java 6. Then go to java.com and download the latest version.

Unless you're willing to do without it. Viruses spread easily through out-of-date java installs.
 
So my Galaxy had a software Android update today and now my friggin' Bluetooth won't stay connected in the car. Really irritating.

Any suggestions?

What carrier and what model?

Have you tried powering it down and starting it back up?

Both of those questions are important.

Most software updates won't take effect until you turn off the device, then turn it back on again. The reason is that old software is still running and can't be updated when in use. By turning off the device, all updated software will then be run instead of the old.
 
Galaxy 3 with nTelos. I have powered down several times. My headset is fine but my car connects then randomly drops....
 
When you get home, do a search on the update. If others have the same problem, you know it's the update that caused it and a fix shouldn't be too far away.

You can learn to live with it for now, or you can go back to the previous version.

Because the carriers have to test and approve the update then push it out. So people on different networks get updates at different times.

I'm thinking you'll have to wait until they push out another update :/
 
Some updates can be nothing but trouble. I remember back when I first installed Ubuntu 6.06. The installation went perfectly, but as I had ticked 'update automatically', the software got updated which was later to be found as faulty, and thus, crashed the kernel and not allowing Ubuntu to be opened. Fortunately, I had a Windows machine handy and found the reason for the crash, then found the fix.

Recently, people updated from XP to Vista, but wanted to go back due to compatibility problems with peripherals, then some updated from Vista to 7, and wanted to go back, and now we have people who have gone to W8 (or 8.1) but want to downgrade back to W7.

You absolutely can... the question is, how much work do you want to put into it? ;)

If we were closer I'd just meet you after work and do it for you, but we're a few hours apart :\

The first step is to root the device, then you can run a backup (nandroid), download the old image (or go straight android and get rid of samsung's BS like I did) and load it.

Honestly, I'd just wait it out. These are known issues and a patch will come your way. Eventually...

If you're interested in running pure android or going back to the previous update I will absolutely help you do so. I've done this sort of stuff on all of my android devices, and my wife's, and coworkers', without any trouble. That being said - you have to realize once you walk down this path that you might wind up with a completely dead phone. The tools designed for this are pretty well designed but it's a risk you have to accept. I'm not buying you a new phone if something goes wrong.

They also give you crap about the warranty once you do it. It doesn't actually void your warranty (in my experience, guess it depends on carrier and how your warranty is written), but they try to convince you that it does so you don't file a claim.

If you knew what you were doing the whole process takes about 10 minutes. First time - I'd block off an hour for it. Let me know if you're interested, I'll collect all the links and instructions and post them for you. It's not hard, especially if you have someone who's done it many times before help you.

If you decide to do it yourself, good luck. Just make sure you get ROM/Images designed for your carrier. Lots of people brick their phones loading the wrong carrier's image onto their phone.

I've got a DVD/CD Drive that seems to be jammed shut and won't open.
It is actually on a Professional Karaoke Player, but the mechanisms in the drive seem to be similar to a PC, that I thought you guys might be able to help, as far as ideas on if it can safely be un-jammed.
