I think it's easy to take that stand as a fan - but when you're responsible (legally, and otherwise) for the safety of players when it's a known fact that brain injuries are occurring as a result of play, it's not as as easy to err on the side of 'fun' Jimbo.
And I would say the NFL is still pretty damn fun. Fun enough that we're all here twisting in the breeze wondering what we'll do if we can't watch it in 2011
When I played HS football back in the dark ages, there were certain types of unwritten rules for hitting an opposing player - our coaches made sure that we lived by those standards. For the most part, those types of rules existed at each level and players respected them.
In recent years, we have seen some of those rules go by the wayside. Certain players have taken it upon themselves to establish newer "standards" that are nothing short of dangerous. Yes, football is a violent sport and that has been true since the first game back in the 1800s. However, the level of "violence" has increased exponentially in recent years and the league has no other choice but to step in.
Commissioner Goodell has done a fine job under the circumstances. Just imagine what the league would be like if his current counterpart (DeMaurice Smith) was sitting in the commissioner's chair. The body bag game from the late '80s would probably look like a flag football game in comparison. Mr. Goodell is the right commissioner to have on the job during this pivotal time in the history of the NFL, imho.

Jimbo nailed it. He's putting tutus on the defense, and legislating hits these players have been doing for years. Brain injuries? I bet 9 out of 10 college players would trade a concussion for a shot at an NFL roster right now. They all know (and have known) the risks.
Not to mention the lockout...

No - you're both way off track if that's the gist of your problem with Goodell. Science has caught up with football Lanky. Yeah, the hits we're seeing are nothing new. But what is new is that we now understand the devastating effect they have, not just on a player for a game or two, but in some instances, lifelong. What players are willing to sacrifice and what they know is largely irrelevant. That's a fairly unsophisticated point of view. Business owners, and certainly NFL leadership, shouldn't just pay attention to the science that shows exactly what I'm saying, they are morally and legally obligated to do so. You 'not liking it' really doesn't (and shouldn't) impact their course of action when it comes to player's long-term health.

The problem with that is, players get concussions from their head hitting the ground, a knee accidentally hitting their head, etc. What's next, fining the turf? Playing on pillows? Fines and such are not the answer, its improving the equipment (IMO).

About two minutes ago (1:35 am EDT), talks ended for the night/morning - that's over sixteen hours straight of negotiating. Obviously, they are at the very serious stages of getting a deal done. It's just a matter of time.

Owners also clung to the possibility of adding two games to the regular season as early as 2014, a move to which most players are adamantly opposed.
Owners, meanwhile, claim that certain expense credits were part of the “all revenue” understanding achieved earlier this month and charge that the players are the ones attempting to change the terms. They are also frustrated by players’ insistence that “all revenue” should include a share of money generated by non-football events (such as rock concerts) at team-owned stadiums.
As for the notion that government taxes on game tickets should be included as revenue under the formula, rather than taken off the top, the owners are downright aghast. They claim that such sales-tax payments were not included among the revenue split in the previous CBA and that an accounting miscalculation by Price Waterhouse Coopers, the firm which monitors the salary cap (and which was commissioned by the NFLPA to calculate projected NFL revenues during the current negotiation), has misled the players into demanding the inclusion of those dollars into the formula.
Further, owners see a direct correlation between last week’s reappearances of Kessler (who was absent for Thursday’s sessions) and Quinn in the negotiating room and the negative turn the talks have taken.
Players, meanwhile, view NFL senior vice president and general counsel Peter Rucco as a divisive force who has played games with the revenue numbers in recent days.

I-and others I've read online-are sensing last-minute jockeying here to minimize the sense of "we didn't get everything we wanted" on both sides.

Talks in Minneapolis are done for the day and done for the week. Negotiations are to resume Tuesday in New York.
The late-night negotiations Thursday put the talks back on course. Otherwise there wouldn't have been a meeting today.
It appears the league and players repaired much of the damage that led to Thursday's near breakdown of talks.
There still could be another breakdown, of course. For now, a handshake deal late next week seemingly remains possible but far from certain.

... It's to the point now where next week, it might not be a major stumbling block if the rest can be worked out. Huge rebound.

OK, the pessismistic view on sides progressing to solve the revenue split -- No telling whose hands will be in the cookie jar next 3 days...
... But that's part of the process too. Everyone w/a vote has a say. Better that problems are aired now, rather than have a deal voted down.
Another nugget I can pass on: A lot of the murkiness/bad blood over what constitutes "all revenue" was worked out over the last 20 hours.

Did anyone hear Van Pelt on the radio the other day? He was talking about how stupid it is when the players say they just want to get on the field and play, for the fans. Or the owners saying that the fans have to come first. He said he is sick of hearing that is why they do what they do. He said it's nice to know they are arguing over a $10B pot, you know, for the fans.
Very funny.
Anyway, this post reminds me why we should root against the players. Arguing that sales tax should count towards total revenues is absurd, accounting error or no. As is counting ticket proceeds from rock concerts. Come on guys, that's crazy.
Now, if they were arguing the involved localities who helped partially or fully fund some of these stadiums should share in the profits...
