The sports card hobby made a massive comeback during COVID. I personally was a card collector as a kid growing up and rediscovered my love of sports cards during the pandemic. EBay and online auctions have added a whole new twist to sports card trading these days and makes virtually any card you desire accessible. Sports card authentication and grading has also added a new twist to the hobby.

I am curious to know who my fellow card collectors might be on BGO?

What do you enjoy collecting most?

What are your most prized card possessions in your collections?

What is the dream card you are after to add to your collection?

What is your biggest sports card regret?

I personally collect for fun and entertainment. I am certainly not one who collects cards in hopes of striking it rich one day. I collect players and cards that have sentimental value and personal meaning.

These days, I am mostly into collecting Redskins cards to document/chronicle the history and story of the franchise. My coolest card is my 1948 Sammy Baugh Bowman rookie card.

Let's hear your story if you have one to share!

Not a collector but mine are my Griffey, Ovechkin, and Montana rookies and now this cheaper one...

I cherish nothing more than my Heath Shuler rookie card - I collected a lot when I was younger but as teenage years approached my interest waned and I sold everything in my early 20's. Similar to retro video game collecting albeit that was late 2000's early 2010's, enjoyed it for a few years and bounced out of it. Those were given to a good friend of mines kiddos with a rule they cannot sell them which surprisingly has been honored several years later, I do expect once they get near college age they'll "disappear" somehow.

I can't say I have any regrets other than a few older cards I purchased (Brooks Robinson rookie) and some others in that era that the price bottomed out like crazy. Collecting is about the experience to me, I never considered it an investment, I do miss the days of all the local card shops, swap meets etc. and of course, hammering out trades with friends. These days I lack the patience and time to get big into collecting anything or I'm just lazy, take your pick.

One thing I do make sure is every year I purchase several older movies on DVD/Blu Ray which ever is available since with streaming you never know what won't be around to watch, I pick up about 4-8 a year. I consider that more archiving than collecting though.

One thing I do wish I still had was a signed mini helmet by Doug Williams that he signed for me at a charity golf event both of us were at (as in my company was a sponsor and he was one of the celebrity golfers). Quite possible an ex of mine took it out of spite and it took me awhile to realize it since it was not on display in my house but boxed with other things.

I have a full set (including the stickers) of the original Star Wars collectible cards. Not sports cards, but still cool to my nerdish heart.

I almost forgot about movie cards, I had the whole set from Topps of the 1989 Batman at one time

These don't count but I have these somewhere buried in my junk cave. What's shown below isn't the actual picture but it's the same exact thing.

I have 18 medium or large boxes in my garage. I need to go out and start looking through them. My collection goes back before sports cards. There was a laundromat in DC that put out 20 match packs for 2 years after the move from Boston. I have both sets. Sammy Baugh had 2 rookie cards because of the war. I have both of them signed by him. I actually went to his ranch in Texas before his death to get them signed.

I think Sean Taylor had 106 rookie cards I have I believe i have 102 of them. Many of them are signed. Sean did not sign any of his rookie cards. You had to get them done in person. I have full sets of Bowman and Topps that go back to the 50s. I have over 20 cards signed by Joe Gibbs. I have all three Super Bowl programs signed by Joe Gibbs and the MVP.

I have not opened any of the boxes in 6 years since I moved to Miami. I bought two collections out from the original Three Hogs plus others.

Like I said it's a pretty insane collection. Probably one of the largest Redskins football collections in the world

I collected a lot during the junk wax era in the late 80s early 90s. – mostly baseball and Skins. Most of it is in mother’s basement where it has been since I left home for college in the mid-90s. One day I need to go through it all, especially because I want the Redskins stuff of which there is ton.

My kids started showing an interest in card collecting during CV-19 and I jumped back in with them. Huge changes from the days of when I would run to my local card shop to pick up some packs and the newest Beckett. We went a little crazy at first and I have become a “hobby” seller on eBay to get rid of the stuff we accumulated too fast. As a family, we collect baseball. UFC, and football of which most goes for sale if the price is right - EXCEPT for Skins/Coms stuff. We keep each and every card acquired because Skins/Coms stuff is part of family tradition/fabric.

I saw a thread on Twitter the other day that showed jersey cards don't even have the jersey of the player on the card. It's usually some random scrub/no name. Not sure if it was all jersey cards or just that line (Panini I think)..but it was eye opening.

I saw that. I am not convinced it is not some sort of short term stunt to reduce patch card supply... lol.

I've never been able to sustain 'collecting'. I have some early editions of horror comics that I loved as a kid... 'It's Midnight, the Witching Hour' and 'Swamp Thing', a few others but never got serious about it. Most 'collecting' I've done has been finding Redskins Media Guides for our library here, I have some really cool ones. When we run out of keyrings for our gameday contests, I may start giving those away - the coolest aspect of them is just the cover art on the earlier ones. I used to have a Redskins game library (vhs games converted to dvd). We financed early ES mostly with revenues from selling copies of those for site donations. I gave the whole collection away to DocSandy prior to her passing a few years ago. Sort of regret that as I'm sure they are sitting in someone's garage unappreciated. When I think of the hours I invested in building that collection it causes me pain.

Anyway, I think it's cool that people collect. I can see how it can become almost an obsession.

Been trying to snag some lower end JD5 RCs for me and the kids. Even the base cards are crazy ridiculous right now. It is so weird to have a Redskins player this sought after. I am not complaining because it means we are winning, but I used to be able to get our QBs in the dollar bins.

Saw a full Topps 2024 Commanders set with JD for $13 on EBay

I was a huge hockey card collector until Covid made everything insanely expensive - here's my flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/189973945@N08/albums

I'm a huge, huge fan of SP Authentic hockey.
I've got 3 photo albums full of hockey cards, I think there are 3 Jagr rookie cards.
Anything in particular you'd like? I'm moving, downsizing and such.
I won't give up any Peter Forsberg or Mike Modano.

No thanks - I'm sliming down my PC too. Going to try slabsharks.com - will see how it goes. Thank you again for asking!

Looking to move my massive Redskins card collection and I don't know if I should just give it to my son or my brother. It's huge.

It's way too heavy for me to retire with in the islands

There are a couple of FB Groups that are Skins Collector specific. You might sell them there to someone who really wants them. I would be interested in any of the Panni SB signature Cards like the one below if you have them and we can come to a fair price.
